Akitas are just like that. They need extensive socialization and even then you have to keep a watchful eye on them. They're a primitive dog breed, them and shiba inu are the most recent dog breeds to offshoot from wolves. Hence, they're more "catlike" than other dog breeds. Wolves don't act like dogs do, they're agile, clean, and independent (of humans).

For a first groom, he did remarkably well. He wasn’t happy, but he never full-on lunged. You talking probably actually helped. You were soft and reassuring and respectful. The difference the right approach makes is so satisfying. Given the right situation, 99% of “difficult” dogs can be successfully groomed and treated by professionals or even owners. Even some of the 1% can have a “comfort” groom if needs must. Woof woof! 🐕

Akitas are really tricky animals to work with because they don't show a great variety of emotion and they can be grumbling about wanting a treat or grumbling about being really scared and it's hard to tell which. I've never owned one but I cared for my cousin's when he was in hospital and it was a steep learning curve. Lots of midnight and pre dawn walks to avoid other animals and people (and because the summer was stupid hot) but they can be such amazing friends once they bond with you. What an Amazing Japanese Akita Inu💞❤💞❤️💞❤️💞❤️💞❤️💞 He's a Stunning Example of the Beautiful Breed, but he's also a Perfect Example of Just How Dangerous a Powerful Breed can become if they are not raised, trained, loved and treated right as they are growing up from a puppy to an adult dog😢 I'm so happy that his new family was willing and able to adopt him and give him a lifetime first home and I'm so very thankful that they found you Vanessa and that you were able to help Yogi with his first time grooming session ❤😊❤ Thank You For Everything You Do For All The Animals 🐾🐾❤️🐾🐾❤️ That Come To You For Help Vanessa ❤️🥰❤

You’re so amazing and compassionate. You have the ability to gauge the dog’s temperament (minute to minute) and level of fear and accomplish the groom his tolerance. Knowing you could remove muzzle is experience- I held my breath when you did, but trust was established, as he politely took treat!

Poor bubby. It's so hard when you get a rescue and you don't know what his/her "missing" years were like. It took my rescue well over 6 months before the light came back on in her eyes and she started to realise that she now had her own "person" who loved and cared for her. All things considered, he did the best he could. You did a great job of keeping him comfortable Vanessa. Perhaps with time he'll do much better. He's a beautiful boy.
