    Welcome! Today's map is a special treat! MARS!!! ❤️ The basis is a map of Mars posted on Reddit which Emeraldpopcorn submitted over on the Discord a few months ago when I was improving and testing the world map generator.
    Mars geography (i.e. the actual real life geography, measured by space probes and released by space agencies like NASA, which is the basis for this map), if it's given water will produce a planet in which half the world is land with a single large ocean around the red planet's North Pole. This is a bit too much habitable land for the simulator to handle smoothly, but I solved this by making the climate just a bit colder than Earth, so that it'd produce large ice caps shrinking the habitable land on the southern hemisphere to more manageable proportions.
    As I wrote in the description of last week's video, at the moment there's a definite lul in development for me. At the end of the day, this is still a hobby project and right now my IRL responsibilities are taking up almost all my time. I'm still improving things, but it's small quality of life stuff, sometimes just cleaning up code without actually changing functionality. So the simulator itself isn't too much different from what it was in the last video, or what it will be in the next. Hopefully this awesome map will make up for that. ❤️
    As always, thank you all so much for watching, liking, and subscribing!!! Let me know if you want to see more Mars in the future!

    I know it's probably just a weird fluke of colonization mechanics, but Tiri at the end really kinda makes it look like alien brainworms arose from the ground and infested half of the population. 😅

      Haha, yes! I found it quite appropriate 😂 For anyone wanting to be spoiled by the sausage making:
      ...
      ...
      Mechanically, it's because Tiri is a very tiny kingdom on the eastern hemisphere that gets super lucky and takes control of the whole Zvonezavodsk Commonwealth by a sneak naval invasion of its capital, conquistadors-style. However, subsequently they don't actually have the power to maintain control of the Commonwealth's territory so it becomes a very chaotic sequence of secession and reconquest. 😂
      But it's totally actually alien brainworms that first took over Tiri and then tried to conquer the world. 🕵🪱

    Hello, great video as always. I was looking at the economy tab and realised some of the provinces/member states lit up brightly, which coincided with large polity conquests. Is this some sort of "golden age" mechanic? It seems to be a driving force in agglomeration of regional states.
    An example of this would be the period between 3175 and 3200, where it manifests through a -13% decrease in global population due to the previously mentioned event happening on Commonwealth of Nirathi. The capital, Bhopaada, is severely depopulated (3-fold) which is analogous to the effect of the Black Plague in Europe.
    Once again, I admire your very complete simulations, full of interesting details. This is fantasy after all, so no need for it to be extremely precise, I'm just very intrigued by the inner workings of it and am impatiently waiting for a public or payed release. :)

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  14 дней назад +5

      That's a great comment, thanks so much for watching with such attention to detail! I try to make something that rewards paying attention like that. ❤
      The "golden age" mechanic you're noticing is a combination of conquerors levying tax and redistributing the wealth among their own lands, and the dividends of peace that follows large conquests. Overall, it's set up so that peace is NOT a zero-sum game. Peace and trade benefits everyone, but it benefits polities at the top of the subject-liege hierarchy more than others.
      I've done my best to double-check the time period you describe and I think you're right. I'm also not seeing any cause that could explain the population drop other than either a plague or a massive drought. Or both. 👍 (droughts differ from plagues in that plagues spread as you might expect, and droughts just hit a specific area with lasting impact.)

    Why did technology advance so rapidly? Its the first time i see purely red bars

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  13 дней назад +6

      The actual technology mechanics are pretty complicated. Because technology is actually tile-based, not national or global. Red and Blue technology are connected by some mechanics but otherwise independent (purple just means BOTH red and blue have been discovered, it's not its own thing).
      Dependent upon the map, its climates, and the way wars and politics go red technology might advance faster than blue or vice versa. The white technology (representing modernization and early industrialization) is only unlocked at max blue technology. That's why it only appears at the end.
      The simulation ends 50 years after max technology has been reached by any tile. (That's why the technology bar works as it does, it's a poor representation of the technological advancement in the world, but it's a good indicator of how close the simulation is to ending as it needs to first get to max blue and then to max white.)

    This is so sick, countries on Mars, awesome, feel bad for Nirathi, lasted long, also, in my opinion the island in the middle has the best strategic location, its protected from invaders, in a moderate climate, yes the ocean would probably make the northern shores stormier and cooler, but could be equivalent to UK, i was expecting the local kingdoms there to eventually unite and become a country and conquer others. Also interesting to see the Hellas Planitia region to be inhabited, eventough I think it would be a body of water too if Mars had an ocean, or just a large depression

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  9 дней назад +1

      Thank you! Poor Nirathi indeed, a real Roman Empire lost there 😢❤
      The central island was actually in a great position for a moment there. Zvonezavodsk was a country on that island and it led the revolution that toppled Obratoslava. But then Kingdom of Tiri naval-invaded them from across the world and everything went haywire. 😆
      Hellas Planitia was fun. The map I used for this for some reason sort of filled most of the basin back up. But I might have been working on a Mars map that improves on that, for some future video at some point. 👀

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  14 дней назад +7

      Thank you for watching! Rivers aren't purely for beauty, but their impact is fairly low. They improve the habitability and defense of a tile, but there's no river-travel mechanic or anything that complicated at the moment. The biggest impact rivers have is that if they run through a desert, they make those tiles habitable as fertile floodplains.

      @@FWHSimulator Yeah I was wondering about this as well because you have this major inland sea on the eastern hemisphere that I feel like would result in very rapid colonization of at least its coast a bit in the style of the Greeks and Phoenicians in the Mediterranean in our history. On an other note, do you have any idea why large parts of the map end up being uncolonized even at the end? That seems very weird as it's effectively just free land waiting for whomever shows up first.

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  13 дней назад

      @@robert-janthuis9927 The thing that most slows the simulation down is the amount of tiles being simulated. So it's intentionally designed to be restrictive. Flavor/RP-wise, there would be hunter-gatherers and small or semi-nomadic settlers living in all habitable climates. But that's just too much to simulate at the level of complexity I'm doing. So the focus is on more serious agricultural development and settlement.
      There's a frontier mechanic where once modernization/industrialization happens (white technology) states that have unlocked it can take control of wilderness tiles without fully settling them. Allowing them to extract local resources.
      But in general it's a thing where program constraints overrule realism. It would be realistic to have much more of a sliding scale of slowly growing population densities. But because it's very all-or-nothing, a tile is either fully simulated or it's fully wilderness, the design is for harsher, more inland locations to stay wilderness for longer and only get controlled late in the simulation, if at all.
      Hope that explains the mechanic and the design choices a bit. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!! ❤

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  3 дня назад

      Thank you! ❤ And I'm afraid not on polar distortion and planet size. Trying to simulate actual spherical surfaces gets real hard really quickly, and I'm not that great of a programmer, so I decided early on to just focus on simple, unrealistically cylindrical maps and call it a day. 😂 Would be cool though if at some point I get the ability or funds to make a proper 3D engine and all that. 💭

    • @Jpteryx
      @Jpteryx 3 дня назад

      @@FWHSimulator Maybe a simple way to model sphericality would be to let the rate of horizontal movement between tiles and the amount of "stuff" each tile can hold vary based on latitude. Specifically, the rate of horizontal movement should be proportional to 1/cos(x) where x is the latitude, and the amount of stuff in each tile should be proportional to cos(x).
      Alternatively, you could slice up the map like an interrupted sinusoidal projection, but that might not be as visually pleasing for viewers.

    • @FWHSimulator
      @FWHSimulator  2 дня назад +1

      @@Jpteryx Yeah, if I wanted to add more complexity probably making tiles relative based on longitude and latitude would be a good start.
