Besides the voice, the best thing about Harry Nilsson was that he never pretended to be anything other than what he was. What a talent; taken far too soon. RIP Harry...
There’s just something about this song that sounds so apropos when you wake up early in the morning and hear it on a radio or something and you’re not fully awake yet. This song takes you to that happy place. It’s like a walk through a beautiful park on a sunny morning or even a walk in the suburbs under shady trees overhead on those old fashioned looking broad sidewalks, rows of older but well maintained houses on both sides, lovely property and gardens, those old fashioned metal fences lining people’s porches, park benches around and people out walking their dogs. Even feeling like you’re on something! 😇
This song came on the "Oldies" radio station as I was driving home from my sister's home. It was totally the highlight of my drive. I'd forgotten what a terrific upbeat song this was. Nilsson's performance absolutely stellar stuff.
His voice is so orignal and his songs so memorable i find myself singing along remembering every word and looking back to those days with fondness and remembering how my late husband also enjoyed listening to his music
What a beautiful song, which I hope the Lord is in New York city now...we need him there..God bless you , you New Yorkers.. stay safe..be well ( I was a child who lived in New York)..have been back to the city twice as an adult. Love New York city. Can't imagine what. you're going through. I'm a Florida gal now. My prayers go out to all of you. L. Burke.
Wow just listened and watched a Professor of Rock episode about Harry, he had a tough life. Can’t believe 25 years he is gone Wow! Great song. Great artist!
The1971orange. I have heard it before, but just now finished watching "You've got mail" with Meg Ryan, (be still my beating heart) and there is a small bit of it in there, so I googled it to hear the full version Harry Nilsson. Loved it.Lovely tune

Harry Nilsson is/was one of my favorite composers and singers. He was also greatly admired by John Lennon and Ringo Starr of the Beatles. Nilsson died in 1994, so his music genius stopped by then. This song was also made popular in the movie 'You've Got Mail.'
I'm sorry about the loss of your brother. Truly. I have lost 4 brothers to Widow Maker's heart attacks. The first one 33 y/o, then 54, then 48, last was 48 too. Do you feel alone? I do. But I will see them again because I asked God to let me. I hope you see your loved ones agaun too and that your brother waits with out-stretched arms (when your time comes).
Just hold those songs dear. Out of all my brothers, only 1 was a musician & singer. He would sing " Gospel Train" for me acapella. The very last time I saw him, he was singing it and smiled and was happy. I know you will always miss your brother. He wouldn't want you to be sad, though. It's hard not to be. I know this, very well. Just let off a little steam and a few tears when you can. God be with you always!
Just checking in to see how you are holding up. I know your heart still hurts. I think it always will. Let me know how you are doing and if you have learned anything that might help me. I am still trying to make sense of my brother's death. I just got a genetic profile back and it seems that I have inherited the SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome), too. At least I know I'll go fast! Until later ...
This song was submitted by Harry when John Schlesinger asked him to submit a song for Midnight Cowboy. Dylan's submission: Lay Lady Lay. They ended up using the working track Everybody's Talkin' instead. Oh well...both Harry and Bob had hits with their songs anyhow.
One of my top 10 favorites OF ALL TIME and I'm almost 80 years old.. the way I felt the first time I got to NYC is this song's Line " where I've always wanted to be "...! What a voice... talk about being taken too soon !!
With material like this, it's no wonder that John Lennon admired Harry Nilsson's work - and probably why they became great buddies and drinking partners.
@@joeoconnor5400 I agree. When Harry, or anyone for that matter, is fighting their own demons and meets a kindred spirit with similar demons, it can spiral out of control for both parties in their mutual appreciation club. I still consider Nilsson was one of the greats both my sons grew up listening to The Land of Point at bedtime.
This was specifically written for the movie 'Midnight Cowboy', but the producers preferred 'Everybody's Talkin', which Nilsson had recorded several years earlier.
Such a beautiful song, accompanied by a one of a kind voice. Oddly enough I discovered this back when Mac DeMarco’s old band Make out Videotape made a cover of this, despite the fact I already knew Harry Nilsson’s music.
Where have all the great singers, composers and musicians gone?!? I want to like today’s music, but it just doesn’t hold up. The music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s will, in large measure, continue to be relevant. Today’s crap, not so much.

Love the comments. Love Harry. Such an amazing song with the wonderful arrangement by George Tipton (who also conducted) and production by Rick Jarrard. Listen to it with headphones and hear the guitar flipping between the two chords, then the banjo jangling overlayed with the guitar licks, and then the strings which seem a bit understated, but embellish and connect all the sounds to compliment as always, Harry's perfect vocal and tone, with his 2nd vocal adding so much depth!! Such a gem and just WOW!!! I play this for younger people who tell me, "Old music is so boring"... Really? This is a great song to use to teach them to learn to listen!! I had never listened to this song from beginning to end....However, reminds me of good ole times of my home, Ontario, California. Crazy. I bought that "single" at a record shop in Auckland,NZ. I bought it thinking, " Who is this Buck Earl singing Nilsson's songs?" Hah! Harry's sharp wit. "Buck" is Jon Voight's character in the movie Midnight Cowboy.

The Beatles, Queen, and Harry. All treated each song as a unique experience. Each song, as it’s own tapestry.
