Chorus:
I'm going where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Banking off of the northeast winds
Sailing on a summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone

I first heard this song when I was 10 years old and my Dad was driving me to school. Now at 64, it still hits me and takes me back to that trip to school. My Dad has since passed, but this song helps ease the pain of his passing. Thanks Dad!!
Some songs and movies are forever....
Papa Alben must have been one helluva man. You'll sing Everything's talkin' with your dad, Harry Nilsson and Fred Neil in a heavenly chorus when it's your time to transition from here to there...but no hurry...we have "time" here, we have forever there. Blessings, Phillip, I hope my voice turns from croaking now to heavenly after I croak (humor intended)
Also 64! ❤
When after more than 50 years someone can still remember exactly when and who they were with when they heard a song for the first time, then surely that is the song of a lifetime. 🥰
It's my Dad's favorite song as well. He recommended it to me when I was at a shitty job, told me to listen to it every time I felt down and it will immediately lift my spirits up.
This song was played in the church at the end of my husband's funeral as we all slowly walked out into the July sun. My son had heard it playing whenever his dad gave him a lift to college and knew how much he really liked it.
I picked this to play at my father's funeral. ❤❤
I was saying to myself I want this song played at my funeral and I end up seeing your comment. God bless you and your family, I know your husband is in a better place where the sun is always shining. Peace and love.
I was walking in Cardiff in Wales this morning and as I left a shopping centre I heard this song. A young man was busking and I had to stop to thank him for his beautiful singing. As this happened a young woman applauded a few yards away.
I send all my very best wishes to him, to her and to anyone who loves this song.
Grab these moments they mean so much and enjoy being part of the world.
Well said...
Could not agree more!! ❤
Saludos desde Chile, hace mucho había escuchado esta canción y recién hoy al ver una película de Joaquín Phoenix y Vince Vaughn al terminar se escucha. Es una sensación de nostalgia, alegria
*_I LOVE this song!_* I was so pissed that _Raindrops Keep Falling Over My Head_ won the Oscar for Best Song in 1969. *Harry Nilsson should have won that Oscar for this song!*
The people from the Oscars Then weren't exactly all Hip,they were mainly Uptights and had zero idea,as Many were still living in the 1950s. He had many great songs, the Beatles were his biggest fans, they Always All spoke Well of Harry. So that's far more telling than the Oscars!

It wasn’t eligible because it wasn’t specifically written for the film.
@@deanskuza5969 Also, it was not a new/original song: it had been previously been released with some success by its author, Fred Neil, in 1966 and then by Spanky And Our Gang in 1968. I think the Academy prefers originals.
I don't know if I agree with you on that ------ BUT I do agree Nilsson was a musical genius at singing ---- SO GOOD!
I had to put my dog to sleep this week and this song popped up on my spotify mix, as soon as" I'm going where the sun keeps shining" was sung, I turned into a blubbering mess on the train. Hope you are where it is always shining as you loved lying in it
I hear you - so sorry for your loss - so heartbreaking. This song is SO beautiful and makes me cry - so touching of the soul....
Your dog is OK. Your dog is a spirit that has been with you since the beginning of time. Don't worry in the flesh. You will see your dog again. You will.
I lost mine recently too ... 20 years ... listening to this song was nice, but then I read your post ... sobbing now.
My heart is broken for you. I feel your pain. We had to say good bye to my beloved Pickles in Jan. We lasted 2 gawd awful days. When the time is right, remember that you have everything you need to help out that perfect someone live out a loving life. Ours, we named Bonnie Junebug and she is the perfect diversion. Not a replacement but a diversion. 😊 I hug you.

Harry Nilsson does not get the respect that his talent warrants.
Tell that to Badfinger.
Amen Steve S
@@loungejay8555 What does Badfinger got to do with it?
@@rosa7236 One of Nilsson's big hits, "Without You" was written by Pete Ham and originally recorded by his group Badfinger.
Perhaps, but I wonder if he'd have gotten more respect if he bothered to tour, or at the very least perform live on a regular basis. With the exception of a few dates at the Troubadour in L.A. and an appearance on TV (The Tom Jones Show, I think), he never performed live.
Such an underappreciated artist. Gotten me through the roughest parts of my life so far

This song is just beautiful
This is just one of those songs you can literally feel. 💙
Yes. What a beautiful voice good memories I love this song. How are you MoosicandCritters ?
I've always been an introvert, only dealing with people out of necessity like at work or school. Being recognized as the "quiet person" automatically makes most people label you as weird, creepy and a number of other derisive terms. Even though I'm an introvert, being labeled can make me feel like an outcast - something that gets me down more than the name calling. This song has gotten me through a lot of those times I felt completely alienated by my peers. Because I am different, I've learned to accept and embrace it.
Honestly, not to sound pretentious, but every time I tried to adapt and "fit in" with the majority of others, I felt like I was lowering myself, or at the very least changing my personality to an uncomfortable level.
"I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not."
Keep practicing mate. Acceptance is the secret to life
Woah
...your describing so many good people...& proud to say me too...thanks buddy.
Hugh- it's my distinct pleasure as a life long (and professional) extrovert to report that you haven't missed much. I.E most people are just plain ol' shit-eaters. So, going forward, if one of those shit-eaters calls you a name or behaves derisively just smile and remember he/she is probably a shit-eater. For myself, I'd prefer nothing more than just being left alone to live my life. I guess, maybe, that qualifies me as an introvert too, huh?
I’m 14 and this is deep
This song keeps coming back to me..... every couple of years, for the past 50 or so years. It is still fresh as yesterday.
I think I was at Fort Jackson at 18 finishing jungle training on my way to Viet Nam .
A musical genius as avant garde as it gets.Even Lennon revered him.
And how about credit for Fred Neil (who wrote it, and also performed it beautifully)?
I don't think that can be true, as Captain Beefheart and his trout mask replica album is a different league of avant garde. Harry Partch too, and even some Tom Waits is more avant garde. I'd say Harry Nilsson's music is relatively mainstream or even pop music in comparison. I do like it though or I wouldn't be here.
I am an MD, on call at the end of Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend. I just admitted an old fellow who told me about how this song speaks to him...and I must agree. Timelessly beautiful and evocative.
And...thank you Mr. Nilsson

RIP.....REST IN POWER
And so do we all

This song was actually written and recorded by songwriter Fred Neil in 1966. In achieved great popularity in 1969 when Nilsson recorded it for "Midnight Cowboy." Nilsson's own song, "I Guess the Lord Must Live in New York City," was rejected for the movie theme, but became a hit in its own right. Both are highly original compositions, and made Nilsson, after years of struggling, an "over-night" star.
I believe the version on the Soundtrack album has a slightly different mix than this version as well. Nilsson had released it as a single prior to its inclusion in "Midnight Cowboy" and when Derek Taylor recommended Nilsson for the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack to director John Schlesinger, Schlesinger selected "Everybody's Talkin'" preferring the cover to the song Nilsson had written and proposed , "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City" which actually fits the film better. Either way, when first released as a single it only got to 113 on the US Pop charts, but after being included in the film it went to the Top ten landing at No 6 on the Pop Charts, and No 2 on the Easy Listening Charts, and also won a grammy for "Song of the year" in 1969. Interesting that Nilsson (who is known as a songwriter of excellence) is one of the few artists to win grammys for "Song of the Year" twice, with songs he hadn't written (The 2nd was "Without You" which won the grammy for "Song of the Year" in 1971, which was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the group BADFINGER. Nilsson had heard that song at a party and walked around for a week asking people, "What album is that new Beatles song on??" Someone finally told him it was Badfinger.)
@@DamGreek Did it not get to no.1 as it supposed to have made him a millionaire.? It deserved to make the top.xxxxx
@@janeyd5280 Some info for "Without You" from wikipedia: Released in the USA, in early December 1971. "Without You" debuted (at 99) on Billboard's Hot 100 in the chart dated December 18, 1971, and on its tenth week, in the chart dated February 19, 1972, started its four-week run at number one. Billboard ranked it as the number four single of 1972.[12] The record topped Billboard's Easy Listening chart for five weeks.
The record spent five weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, beginning on 11 March, eventually selling almost 800,000 copies.[13] It went to number one in several other countries, including Australia (for five weeks), Ireland (two weeks) and New Zealand (two weeks).
I think you're right, that the song did in fact make him a millionaire. Nilsson didn't tour, so his income depended on his songwriting and his record sales. There were some "minor" hits, when others recorded his songs....but other than "Everybody's Talkin'"...Nilsson had not had the chart success that made him wealthy until the album which contained "WIthout You" called "Schimillson". (Other hits from the album were, "Coconut" and "Jump Into The Fire"). The albums prior to 1971 did sell well, and got a boost when the Beatles acknowledged that they were Nilsson fans, but he really took off after his "Schmillson" album, but that was also short lived, as he did "Son of Nilsson" and then the album of standards called "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night", which he recorded with Gordon Jenkins, who was a well know arranger from the late 1950s and 1960s. The album of standards also criticallly regarded as "exceptional" killed Harry's career as a chart record artist. He''d have other minor hits, and also record "Pussycats" with John Lennon, but he never returned to the Top 40 again...but I'm not 100% sure on that, so don't quote me.
@@DamGreek thank you for your info. I've got a few of his albums and have the one he does with an orchestra. I would say my favourite. I remember my future ex husband (lol) commenting to me in 1971 or 72, "that's Nilsson" when without you was in the charts but my favourite song is Everybody's talk in.xx ps I'm from SCOTLAND.X
@@janeyd5280 You're welcome. Yes..the album you probably have with the Orchestra is probably "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night"..which is the album of old standards Nilsson recorded with Gordon Jenkins in 1972-73 I believe. Either that or it's the album he did in 1977 called "Knnillssonn" which was mostly strings....check out songs like "Perfect Day" and "All I Ever Think About is You". One thing to note....in the early 1980s I believe...they found the old tapes from "A Little Touch of Schmillson in the Night" and issued several of the outtakes. (You can read about it here: www.harrynilsson.com/music/a-little-touch-of-schmilsson-in-the-night/) Then a few years later, they issue a CD with the whole of the original album, and included all of the outtakes together, calling it "As Time Goes By" (You can see the cover in this same link above). "As Time Goes By" is still around, but somewhat more difficult to find these days. But it's well worth the investment. Hope this helps. By the way, I'm in California. Nice to meet you. DmGrk

Whether you may be physically lost in the land of beauty, or emotionally frayed in a still room, you will find this song and it will have been worth hearing once again.
This song is mostly appreciated by those that can identify with the lyrics. Indifference towards those that don’t understand you and acceptance of the fact that change is always welcome when loneliness and incomprehension from others makes you a target for hate.

Simply one of the best tracks ever recorded.
In 1970 at 25.. I moved to Jamaica… I figured, why wait until I was old to get to island in the sun. Then old was 65
I was by the beach and there was a small town up mountain … that had a movie theater.. mostly played American action movies. I saw that the next week Midnight Cowboy which I had seen was playing.
Whoever booked the movie probably thought it was a western as I am sure the locals had no clue what was going on
Great movie… fabulous song… for me over years best driving song ever
After Jamaica, went back to NYC.. was late fall and I had to move… never lived in a cold place again.
I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin'

One of the best songs ever recorded for one of the best films ever shot
Riding down the road after a summer evening rain in my dad’s ‘65 oriental blue p/u. Steam coming off the road smelling like wet asphalt and sunshine. This song comes over the AM radio. My dad reaches over and turns it up…we were headed to who knows where??…and I’m trying, at a young age, to savor every moment.. I’m glad I did!! Dedicated to my wonderful childhood ❤. We didn’t have anything, but we had everything.
This song holds a special place in my life, faithfully accompanying me over the years.😃
From the summer of 69 and life full of promise . Top down driving. I was 16 and this song was on my radio! The road stretched out forever! If only that was true
Harry's gift was his undoing. Sometimes, for some people, their strength is also their weakness. And vice versa. But bless you, Harry, for leaving us these songs. This is one of many he sang that were simply superlative.
I spent about half a week looking for this song in folk rock playlist all over youtube with only the guitar at the begining and that high note he hits at the end on "leave" in my head. I think I'm going to play this non stop for about a week. Man I'm so glad I found it!
I know what you mean when you're trying to find a song and finally get to hear it again. Imagine how bad it must have been before the internet, and you couldn't Google some lyrics you caught, and no Shazzam either to call, and get a text back saying what track it is.
Reading through the comments, this was a song that many of our fathers related too. It's forever imprinted on us. I miss you dad!
The greatest voice of all time. Very soothing. Makes one feel like they are in the song.
This song applies to any situation I have daily. Working in yard, driving, sitting outside staring at clouds, past memories, college days.
You know sir, that is exactly what this song brings to me. Just the year 1970, I didn't see the movie, it was taboo. Just music on the AM radio. I was twelve, but it, when I look back, was the best year of my life. Things were soooo much simpler. All I had to do was paper route, and I had money to spend or save. I miss all my family who have passed. This song brings back to me them. My grandma lovingly called me her "wandering Jew", as in Moses in the Bible....which funny, came true.
Me too.😢

Added this song to my solo acoustic show a couple months ago. Thought I was probably taking a real longshot - people either aren't going to know this song, or they just won't care. But figured I tried it once since I spent a lot of time leaning the fingerstyle picking. So I finish the song, in front of a bar room of about 40 people, and much to my surprise I get a rousing applause from the whole room. Even a standing ovation from a few! Just goes to show what a masterful classic this beautiful song is. 50 years later, and it still means that much to people. I think because it really speaks to a feeling, a time. and a place that so many of us have encountered during our lifetimes.

Harry Nelson est un génie
Toujours présent grâce à son art
Inoubliable à jamais
Comme tout les poètes disparus
