War of the Roses Battle Report (Hail Caesar) - 03 (A Settling of Scores)

  • The houses of York and Lancaster meet again in this first battle report since the end of lockdown. The armies are large, the costs are high and only one side can emerge victorious.
    Both sides are made up of 3 divisions (in retrospect this might have been a little large but why are we painting all these miniatures if we can't get them out on the table).
    It's a straight up pitched battle with victory points awarded for shaken units, detroyed units and enemy commanders captured or slain.

    Entertaining battle report.As I read the rules a 6 for shooting disorders the target ,not causing a break test. A break test is only taken if the nit is shaken and takes further casualties. A house rule we use is we roll 2d6 each turn for each player to determine initiative for that turn. Makes planning your attacks less sure than if you know you are always moving first.

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  3 года назад +1

      Cheers mate 👍 a roll of 6 causes automatic disorder in Black Powder. In Hail Caesar if you roll a 6 to hit (when you needed less than 6 on the roll) you roll on the break test table (pg 44) and use the ranged results column. If you needed 6 to hit you roll another dice and a break test is taken on anither 6. You jave to test as well if you become shaken.
      Thats a good idea with the 2d6, may have to try that out, nice one 😁👍

    Great Battle report always really enjoy your games. Shame it came to such a thundering end with the King getting killed but always very risky having him in combat when got a high amount of attacks. Can't wait for the next battle report. You both certainly have some nice armies.
    Interesting to see some pikes in the mix.
    Can I ask do you play a house rule for retreats after a break test as in the hail caesar rules it says "if a friendly unit blocks its path it will move through it, and will make 2 or 3 moves where necessary to clear the position of other units. A retreating unit is obliged to make additional moves to clear the position of friends is automatically disorderd once it has done so. So going from the rules you are meant to move the unit as far as needed and then becomes disorderd if it has to move more than 3 moves to reach that position but I have noticed that you count the units as destroyed instead can you clear that up please

Just poor wording from me. They didn't fail the rolls, just didn't get enough orders. Table and game looks great, keep up the good work! Your vids have inspired me to finally make a start with the War of the Roses period. I was wondering if there was a reason you have modelled 5 infantry to a base? I was thinking of doing the standard 2 by 2, 4 infantry per base on a 40mmx40mm base, but looks like you have 60mmx40mm with another. Trying to weigh up the pros and cons

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  3 года назад

      Thanks very much, thays great to hear 👍
      Basing wise as were using Hail Caesar it's the size of the base (i. E the frontage) that matters. The nu ber of me on it is broadly irrelevant. I tend to out 5 or 6 on as it suits depending on what i want them dlong, banners etc. If you look hard in some of the units of bill and bow you'll see bases of bill with 7, 8 and even one with 9 on in there. Its purely aesthetic. The men don't have individual stats themselves just the unit as a whole and that is only modified by the unit being small (which we say is 2 bases) medium (3 bases) or large (6 bases), we make a few exceptions here and there (i.e the pike).
      Hope that helps, if you would like any more info juat let me know 😁👍

      @@7thson726 That would be awesome. I'm building out a couple of HC armies and would love to be able to tweek the commanders with some special rules.

      Sorry to hear that, i assume you mean the filming of the rolls, not how terrible mine were

      @@7thson726 Yes the filming....absolutely horrible to watch...i like Batreps which leave them out but for a few funny/terrible rolls

      @@richardbradley2335 appreciate the point of view mate. Personally i enjoy seeing them in games as i like system mechanics so my reports will probably be keeping them. This was a particularly large game as well so alot of engagements to resolve. I remember we did a poll on the stream and it was overwhelmingly in favour of having them in, just one of those things, can never please everyone unfortunately 👍 The narrative parts of our campaign will be less dice heavy and more manoeuvre / event reporting.
