- Well you all voted for it so here is the next Black Powder battle report. We decided to go with a straightforward pitched battle scenario for this one. I once again take the French while Hayley has the British forces. 3 Brigades each, 6 turns (rolling for a 7th). who will emerge victorious!

Another great battle report. Thought I’d mention which might have saved your Cuirassiers, cavalry never hold ground after combat. They would have retired 1 move in 7+ so won’t have been broken in turn 2. But as a mainly British player I was glad to see them go 😁
And the Highlanders combat, they kept winning the battle so hitting on 3+ (nothing for obstacles) but French would have got the obstacle +1 save (2+ saves).

Yeah its one of those things I've added to a post it note now in the book 😅 i can't remember why we didn't count the civer, there was a reason but it escapes me haha

Thanks for holding the game and videoing it and editing it, and including explanations for the dice rolls, and the rolls themselves! A large effort but worthwhile I hope. Good to see the rules in use and how a typical full game goes.

Excellent, I’ve waited for ages for a new battle report to come out 😁 These are amongs my favorite on the entire YT. Shame it isn’t ACW (because that’s my period of BP😅).
On the other hand, 10:58 when the Hannoverians are attack at their flank I’m pretty sure thr BP2 rules state that you can’t attacl with more than 50% of your attack to the flanks. Please correct me if I’m wrong on this 😅.

A well narrated battle report.
That one French battalion who were stood next to the wall were epic, they absorbed a beating and stood fast. Easily the unit of the game.
The French had some lucky dice rolls while the British were unlucky. Causing the French to be stubborn while many British units were routed.
However I reckon the French could have done a lot more… in the second half of the game, the Swiss unit, the 2 French artillery batteries and the Chasseur cavalry didn’t do anything.

Excellent battle... well done Martin. The use of the attack column plus fair dice worked really well for you. All the British could have done is to have held back in line and poured fire into them.

@@7thson726 Very true and it demonstrates why old Bony was so successful. It took great dicipline and training for an army to withstand this and proves just how good the British army and its British trained allies were. In the battle, British/Hanovarian troops failing orders and not moving to a good firing position was influential in the attack columns being able to charge.... brilliant stuff. I love how, even with a less " authentic" rule set you get a glimpse into the teal decision making.

Great Game Guys, bit of the slug fest! MVPs for the French were the Big Brothers and that Line Battalion seeing off two Regiments of Hanoverians and the Highlanders. Don't you just love rockets?!!....Martin, bugger the coffee Mate, I'm with Hayley, watched and enjoyed with a large(3 fingers) of Gold Watch, Cheers Guys🥃

I both love and hate rockets, they seem to hit friendlies as often as enemies (or themselves) but they're so fun for that.
Thats the thing, they are just too much fun not to use 😅
Can i poiny out how incredibly lucky you have beennwith cuirassiers? If your better half would have done at least 1 casualtybon the closing fire, you would have had to take a break test in the hand to hand table. The best result for cavalry is to retire one full move, which would have left you like a sitting duck in short range of the artillery and the hanoverian brigade.
It was a glorious charge tho!

I couldn't believe that a column can be charged in the flank and not be in the slightest way bothered. No moral checks nothing, just turned and fought back with a positive modifier! A quick check of the rules shows a couple of issues. One, -1 die roll in hand to hand if attacked in the flank. Two, there is no mofifier that I can see that gives the French Column a +1 save for fighting over a wall.
Good video though, keep it up.
Yeah we realised after, just abother thing to note for next time. Off the top of my head the defending unit benefited from light cover confering a +1save, fortifications are normally +2 so we decided the wall wasn't in the same degree. I guess there is room to argue that they wernt actually occupying the position but we just went with it 😁 glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 👍

Hey y'all, great to see you & enjoy your Black Powder battle report. It was really cool to see a battle with an enviable number of troops for both sides. Pity the table size didn't allow a bet more maneuver before the smashing of bayonets but I enjoyed the manifestation of sort of a stage 2 of the battle where the French sort of backed off the emphasis of hand to hand, which was fairly successful, in order to form line & pound the already fairly cut up British formations through to the end of game. I commend you on your ability to call the game and particularly the dice rolls, why the number of dice being rolled and the required number to hit or save etc., very impressive. Finally, I hope you'll forgive me for saying how nice Haley looked without her glasses so we could see her eyes which are lovely. 7th son looked okay but what can you say about the top of your head? The glasses are fine but reflect too much light to see her eyes underneath. Thanks again, I look forward too your next video.

@@7thson726 not sure if it was from this video or not (I’ve watched so many I lose track) so sorry if this isn’t relevant, but AFAIK it’s only a unit or group of units that fail an order that get a free move if in column etc, not any units that haven’t moved that are in column. As I say, I might be confusing this content with a TOTALLY different video LOL.

Really enjoyed this battle report! Is there anything you change to make Black Powder work better with your table? Was originally put off the game by the need for massive tables but yours doesn’t look too big unless camera angles are changing it? I’m currently building a room to get a 6x4 in.
Thanks very much glad you enjoy it 👍 all i do is reduce the movement to 2/3, so infantry move 9" while cav go 15". I choose to keep the weapon ranges the same. That makes it work on a 6 x 4 pretty well

Cavarly can't charge home against a formed square unless its disordered. Once its formed they either habe to end their move 3" away or use any remaining move to go round the sides, so no combat is fought 👍
I would love to see you do a meeting engagement where all of the units start off board and enter semi-randomly to fight over a crossroads and a small village.
I like the aound of that, next BP we do I'll suggest that 👍
@@7thson726 Scenario 4 - Off Table Deployment
Both armies start off the table. Before any orders are given to a unit, roll a dice. In the first turn, on a roll of 5 or 6 you may place the unit in your deployment zone on the table and issue it with an order as usual. On this first move, movement is reduce by one order. In other words the maximum that you can move is two ‘orders worth’ of movement. You can apply the rule to individual units or brigades or a mixture of both. After that, movement is as per normal Black powder rules. On turn two, the dice required to deploy is reduced to 4,5 or 6. Turn three, you need 3 to 6, turn 4 you will need 2 to 6 and this stays in place so if you throw a one in turn 5 your brigade still will not arrive! arcanesceneryandmodels.co.uk/scenarios-for-black-powder/

Cheers mate, appreciate it 😀 not a house rule, 6's don't cause disorder in close comabt automatically only shooting does that. Disorder is applied in close conabt through break teat results 👍

They only have to form Square when charged by Cavalry, or start within 12" (or 9" when we reduce for the size of the table) we use the rules from Clash of Eagles where you have to roll a normal order to form Square 👍
I gotta add a rocket battery to the shopping list, love a good mishap table. Need some more Hanoverians as well - my only regiment is painted up as the Luneberg who kept the old green uniforms, was going crazy from all the British in red.
The Hanoverians are a constant thorn in my side, the rockets are great fun 😀

Could you tell me the size of the table and the standard infantry unit frontage?
This game was on a 7ft x 4ft board and the units were 240mm when in line (60mm per base) 👍
Great game as always but Haley could have moved her Hanoverians on iniative as the Cav was so close

Full disclosure, I have BP, but not BP2. So can the cuirassiers do a sweeping advance, to the left and into infantry? Not trying to be snarky and I don't have the rules set that you are using. Thanks
Hi mate, no problem at all, 👍 yeah once the combat was won in the first round the cavalry can make a sweeping advance and charge following all the normal rules, as they were positioned on the flank of the unit they have to charge its flank and will do so by the most direct means 👍

Curious... @48;30. Why do attack columns get a bonus against volley fire, then attack columns offer a large market?
So, attack columns always receive a +1 morale save to represent the waves of men just moving forward and stepping over each other. Men in march column recieve a -2 to their saves, it's just there to represent the momentum as they were hard to stop.

I dont think they loose the bonus for being in an attach column (the +1 to the save) but happy to be corrected it so 👍🙂 the modifiers keep getting added for who won the last round

Is there a reason you guys never try to do... Brigade orders? I think that's it. There's a few times where I've seen both of you basically issue orders individually to battalions that are essentially the same but then it cocks up due to a failed command role with the 2nd battalion and the whole brigade but one just sits there.

Well basically you said it there, we may cock up the 2nd roll but at least one moved, in games this small screwing up a whole brigade order would mean nearly half the army not moving. We've used them here and there. I find they are generally more useful in larger games on bigger tables with 4 + brigades 👍

@@7thson726 Well... the way you do it half the army doesn't move anyway and now you have onesy and twosies units hanging out alone and unsupported. Individual orders make sense later on when your engaged and mixing it up but in the beginning if you give a brigade order of "advance and occupy the field" and you make it or make the reroll. THE WHOLE BRIGADE advances. The worse that happens, you fail your roll and your reroll... well if you're doing it one unit at a time... you're still not moving anyone. It's not like you get a roll per unit once you've double botched that's it for that brigade. So in my mind you're not sustaining greater risk, but you're potentially gaining more.
@@PsykerKaregg i completely understand the use and application of Brigade orders. Like all aspects of orders they have their uses, like everything in the game it comes down to the choice of the player. I've just never found them game changing in games this small. Its all for fun though, so I'll definitely give them another shot next game 👍 to be fair with the attack columns they should move, though with my luck... 😅
Why the Swedish dicetray? - curious swede
I have a Swedish army in 15mm for By Fire and Sword and it was the only tray I could find at short notice, though I like it so i now use it all the time 👍
Attacking in the flank does not seem to cause any combat penalty? is that right?
When attacked in the flank the flanked unit receives a - 1 on its roll to hit and the flanker gets a +1 to combat resolution. The combat resolution was clear in most cases before even applying the flank.

Sure, i have tokens for Shaken, Valiant, first fire, elite 6+ 5+ 4+ and 3+, tough fighters and wavering. You could do them for disorder as well but i use the cotton wool markers 👍 hope that helps

Getting saves in this game is weird. Maybe cuirassiers and the like should but everyone getting them is odd.
I get what you mean,they are actually morale saves, at least thats the terminology in the book, not armour. More to do with the fighting spirit of the men and the casualties don't juat represent the dead but wounded, broken and confused men as well. Think it really depends on the level of training and experience, hence the British guard regiments have a save of 3 👍

I think that a casualty is a casualty no matter where it came from when it comes to the breaktests. But I don’t have the rule book so I do not really know. That is just a theory.
hi viking checked another video seems if a casualty is caused by closing fire its kept aside ,the hand to hand takes its course and casualties inflicted counted as per rules. Since the casualty was caused by closing fire it would not be involved .if the opposing side is destroyed, the casualty would then be included if the unit goes into further action
Hi sorry, been a busy few days and only just managed to reply. The casualty its just placed on the unit and doesn't count towards combat score. However if you cause enough casualties to make the charging unit shaken then they must take a break test once the closing fire is resolved. They are also shaken for the combat meaning in the result of a tie they will be taking another test. After a break test all excess casualties are removed back down to the units stamina value 👍
@@7thson726 hi Martin appreciate the reply .yes i agree. stands to reason a casualty caused by closing fire is not counted, no mention in black powder book, only about the charging unit becoming shaken ,not taking one or two casualties. my wargames only a few played is A C W where protracted fire fights were more common. but watching your videos I would include hand to hand to tense up the game. Thanks and will be watching for more reports.
Did you wife play wargames before you got together or has she been drafted ?
She's always lobed board games and tabletop rpg's bit it was definitely me drafting her 😅 only took 14 years, a lockdown and not being able to leave but now she really enjoys them, not all, but loves Black Powder 👍

Hate the rules for saying units fight at full strength even if taken in the flank...in Ricks previous set WMA those Hanoverians would have got about 2 dice to attack with....much more realistic
They can only use half their dice to the flank, which i think we realised once but becacuse we'd already started one way we played through to keep it fair, was still alot of fun
@@7thson726 It was a great video; the other rule point that I noticed is that Shaken units can support they just can't charge, this would have helped Hayley on more than one occasion.

Yeah again we realised afterwards, to be fair i didnt support with any of my shaken units either so at least we were equal on that.

I hope you don't mind if I point out some things that I think are mistakes. At the top of the hills the battalion only hits with a maximum of 1/2 to the side so only 3 dice against the cavalry for been hit on the side page 69 and -1 to hit back because they are attacked on the flank page 68
