I have been a Boykin guy for over 30 years. I’ve had 2. My first, Stormy, was a terrific dove and duck dog, as well as, a pet. She was very healthy and lived to the ripe old age of 13. I got my second one, Marley, from “Just Ducky Kennels, in Edgefield, SC. She was equally adept at dove and duck hunting, and was a great loving pet too. Marley lived to 17 years old! Because of health reasons, I haven’t gotten another pup. Sometimes it breaks my heart not having a Boykin anymore. I miss hunting over them and their companionship! Both of my girls were on the smaller side being just under 25 pounds, but they both had huge hearts. Like you said, they would retrieve it seemed like forever, be it birds, a bumper, a tennis ball, or just a stick. I miss them everyday, but love seeing videos of them. Thanks for sharing.
I have had a female Boykin for 12 years now. She is absolutely the best dog I've ever had. She is a great family dog and has never tried destroying anything. I can leave her at home wether it be for a short period of time or hours, and never have to worry about her getting into things. I would recommend one always. Just give them lots of love and attention.

We've wanted one for a decade but live in WA state and finding them out here has been tough, with only a couple of breeders whose waiting lists were years long. Your girl is a beauty! Where did you ultimately get your Boykin at? I'm in Seattle and there is no one listed on the Boykin preferred breeders list even remotely close to us that I saw.
@@Boykinoutdoors I've never met one in person, and I'd really like to before trying to put my name on wait lists for breeders thousands of miles away. It looks like most breeders are concentrated in the south (makes sense given they are from SC). I'm starting to contemplate flying to my hometown to visit my family in TN and try to meet some Boykin breeders. They just haven't made it this far out here yet in significant numbers from all I can tell.
@@chantellosejo9818 yeah from my experience they are more southern east coast. They are a spunky little dog. I would for sure suggest that you go and meet one before you decide to just get one and go to make sure it’s exactly what you want!
I have a 2 1/2 yr old female. She has been relatively easy to train for a novice. We have hunted SD, Kansas, and Wyoming for chucker, pheasants, and dove. She is a hunter and all business when in the field. She does well in the snow and cold I use an insulated vest. She is the only hunting dog that I have had that has caught pheasants on the flush. Great dog.
Hi, just lost my Wired Hair Pointing Griffon after 12 and half years of pure joy to hunt and be around. Like all I have been reading about the Boykin breed so far. Does your dog shed alot in the house? My WPG was terrible with fine hair getting everywhere.
@@williamheger6607 I have my dog groomed two a year. I live in Wyoming and if I leave the coat long in the summer or hunting season she is a burr magnet. I haven't see much shedding as I brush her frequently.
So bear doesn’t shed as bad as other ones i have been around, but i have seen some that shed a lot. I would say just keep them brushed out and groomed and it’s not a huge issue. You will still be sweeping up hair.
Thanks for the video! Doing some research for my next dog. How vocal are they? How about separation anxiety. I’ve seen a couple who struggle with crate training. Seem like great dog overall. Couldn’t find the kennel you got yours from. Would love that info if you have it. Thanks again!
Really just depends on the dog. Some can be very vocal and then some are like mine who only barks occasionally. Bear had no issues at all with crate training, in fact she loved her crate! Just have to get them used to it as a puppy. Bear can get separation anxiety if I’m gone for long periods of time like days or even a week, but for the most part she’s knows I’m coming home eventually and is fine!. I would highly recommend a Boykin if you like smaller dogs that are extremely smart! I think Boykins are one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever been around personally. If you work with the dog and do it correctly i think you could get the basics. You probably won’t see top field trial like actions, but who cares if the dog goes and gets the bird and brings it back and is happy. That’s all that matters!
Other than the fact that one would freeze to death if you moved it north, and the other would die of heat prostation if shipped south, the Boykin and the American Water Spaniel look like about the same dog in almost every other aspect.
They are more tough than they get credit for I’ve had mine in Icy conditions in the winter and 100° days during dove season and she’s never quit or acted like it bothered her.
They are great little dogs for moderate waterfowling on small water but they definitely lack the horse power for really big water and harsh frozen hunts. One really has to be honest on how they use their dogs and the fairness that each breed and even line of breed deserves. I wish I could find a Chessi level breed that could also handle 100 degrees plus dove hunts and the below zero goose hunts.
I agree to an extent. I’ve had my dog on some really cold hunts and really warm hunts. I’ve never seen my dog quit or act like it ever bothered her. But yes to your point i 100% agree that using the dog honestly and humanely is correct. There is a limit for every dog and the handler must make the responsible call in that situation.
I no longer pound honkers on fields now, how would you figure these guys do on divers in icy water? Currently dogless and looking to down size to fit in my little 14' boat.
I’ve used my Boykin in icy waters, she never quits or seems to mind. Obviously they get cold like all other dogs do but i think they do fine for my purposes. Make sure they have a vest and just dry them off when you’re done before the boat ride back and that has seemed to work for me!
Mine hunts pheasants and fall turkey like a champ but refuses to pick up a pheasant. She's picked up doves and pigeons. Sleeps next to me every night and growls at my wife when my wife playfully tries to throw her out of bed. She's also obsessed with her tennis ball. I use a camo Carhart coat for really cold weather.
Titled Labs in UKC hunt tests. My Boykin is 12yrs old. Will outlast (days of continuous hunting) Labs in the pheasant/quail fields. Smart. But aggressive. Will not have another one.
I have nothing against labs at all i believe they are tried and true hunting machines. I agree i will personally never have anything but a Boykin, mostly because it fits my lifestyle best!
From my experience they shed twice a year. Once for the winter coat and once for their summer coat and it’s not as bad as i was expecting. I have seen on Facebook other dogs that do shed and it is a problem but not a big deal for my personal dog.

@@chantellosejo9818 mine came out Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was easy for me cause I’m about 1.5 hrs from there. SC is also the state dog.

What about shedding? We’re looking for a dog but we don’t want a lot of shedding
