    The older I get, the more riding near cars really scares me. I wish bike routes without cars were far more common.

      The packed dirt and gravel trail in the video what we need more. Paved paths are overkill and not environmentally friendly.

  • @jeffdible8171
    @jeffdible8171 2 года назад +8

    Incentivize bikes! Make the city centers pedestrian/bike centric. Getting out there is so important, but supporting commuting, bicycle based businesses, and making the systems human centric instead of car centric will dynamically change the landscape. For “getting out there” have a crawl, walk, run approach. The crawl portion would be supported with rental equipment and a campsite, glamping, or a B&B approach. Let people do the ride, but have everything else ready. Next step is less support all the way to self supported. Like you said, it needs to be easy to start. If they start getting out there, you’ll set the hook

    Canada seems to be very lacking in anything similar. :( Even our "Great Trail" isn't as great as the name would suggest. For a country bult by the use of rail, there seem to only be decent rail trail conversions in B.C. Alberta has next to nothing outside of The Jasper-Banff-Canmore corridor.

    The best way to make biking safer, is to educate people in cars. Teaching them to pay more attention. Plus let them know that bikes have the same rights to roads that cars do. It used to be called the Bikecentenial route across America, well back in 1976. But teach people not only how to ride safe I live in Wyoming, and its hard up here, drivers often don't even see me, when I'm out on my recumbent bike, even with my two flags. So teaching drivers is the first thing.

    There needs to be more trails connecting cities
    For example, in California many cities are decent for biking (within the city) but there is no decent bike route from Chico to Oroville, or Chico to Paradise etc
    There should be an initiative to connect nearby cities and towns with bikepaths

    • @dustinmcdowell848

      What I notice too often here in the Midwest is a lot of trails start 30 miles or so out side of the city and then end 30 or so outside another city. People need to be able to start their adventure from their front door. More bike infrastructure now!

    • @tremblence
      @tremblence 2 года назад +2

      @@dustinmcdowell848 Agreed- Europe has an incredible network of trails, most are dirt, crushed granite etc.... in the US they seem to focus on asphault which is ok intercity.... but long distance its better and cheaper to have it crushed granite.... although a paved path is nice for longboarding

    About accessibility. Not having closed captions available on the video makes it very hard to enjoy fully for those with hearing disabilities. Otherwise the channel is one of my favorite.

    My first cross country was with ACA, self contained, from San Diego to St. Augustine. Made some great friends, one of them does RAGBRAI every year. I'm a day's ride plus or minus depending on how good of shape I'm in from Missoula where ACA is located. Their routes, are mostly great. But from time to time just pulling up Google Maps and finding a route can be just as good, or better. So if you find yourself on a route that is sketchy, which happens, you can potentially find a better option. Even the best routes, can change. I'm a half day's ride south of the Northern Tier. The minor bit I'm familiar with is OK, but there are options that are potentially better. ACA is an excellent resource. The leader of my group, the last I heard, was riding somewhere in Europe. An excellent friend, along with several others I met on that trip. We had an exceptional group that got along quite well. Not that there weren't the occasional differences of opinion on food. But overall it is more or less what you personally decide how to interact with the group. I have dreams of riding a lot of different of the ACA routes, especially the coastal and cross country rides. Most everyone I rode with was older than me, at the time I was under 60, barely. But the guy that none of us could keep up with was 72 at the time. He still rides. Currently I mostly dream of riding as I went back to school to get my PhD. But riding is what I dream of doing. The maps that ACA provides are an excellent start to finding your own, custom route, from here to there. You can ride bikes without burritos, but that would be boring. Between burritos and tacos, burritos win every time. Search for Adventure Cycling at AmazonSmile if you want to support them while buying cool stuff online.

    Bummer, ACA promo ran out. Worst of all, I viewed this right after it came out and wanted to sign up but life happened so I missed the window between elder care, kids, etc. Just went on my first bike packing trip last summer too. Maybe Black Fri or Christmas promo?

      I live about two hours north of Ryan,and I ride year round. You just dress for it. Lots of wool and a good wind shell. I use mittens when it really gets cold out. It takes some getting used too. Oh and a good face cover up.Leaving your eyes uncovered, of course. :)

    Duzer, I think you should push them to examine your "love cycle" cross country route. I see it as a much safer route then the current rount they offer. Times have changed and I just feel the current route is very unsafe these days.

    I would love to do an Adventure Cycling tour, but not at National Geographic prices. $1400 for 3 days not including airfare is way too steep for my money, and I can easily afford it. If they really want to get more riders out there, they need to lower their prices. And I'm still on their mailing list from the days when I was President, Treasurer, Clerk and Membership Coordinator for our local bike club back in 2008-2012 (not at the same time).

    • @taztaztaz

      yep.. wish they had a few tiers with membership like ‘free’ routes, then a “pay what you’d like' routes , then maybe a top $ tier for the coast to coast routes.. would be way more accessible..
