Seeing the wacky gamemodes teased for Street Fighter VI this feels like a game that comes from a future where the devs already played those and said "ok but what if we made one of our own, cooled and more fleshed out?" keeping things simple seems the right direction for the premise so I can't wait to wishlist it and get it to try and convert some of my friends. A super move or big cool down bar for a cinematic move could help give the more casual player some excitement, rly excited to see this great game evolve
"Taking place in a dystopian cyberpunk Romania"
So just Romania
The aesthetic and graphical choices immediately caught my eye, but then you said Nidhogg with actual fighting game mechanics and you got my full attention. Instantly wishlisted.
With the upcoming rise of free-to-play fighting games (Multiversus, Project L), maybe it's time to talk about a game so free that you don't even have to download it in order to play it: Tough Love Arena.
The racing element reminds me of when Catherine when it got turned into an esport fighting game, like the goal of climbing to the top in the beginning was soon eclipsed by the strategy of knocking your opponent off the tower.
Wow
The
*EDGE*
XD
You just reminded me of a Character Select fanart for a SMT fighter.
Vincent was there!
My imagined moveset? FLASHBACKS
He recalls the nightmares and acts them out!
I'll explain
1) Please Wake Me Up: he shouts "_atherine! Then:
Glasses: she heals you and gives you1-hit shield
Blondie: boost Super Bar and buffs the Nightmare moves
Rin: bit of life AND Super boost and enable UFO
Nightmares A: the EDGE- a set of blocks appear, you know what to do XD
Nightmares B: the SHEEP- one (or more) sheep appear
Nightmares C: the FLOOR - the floor spawns block hazards. You good at tick throws?
Supers? THE BOSSES
I'm really liking the shifts fighting games have made to feel more intuitive and make more clear what is happening. The giant visual tell and slowdown with the announcer going COUNTER in Strive feels so satisfying while also opening up enough of a reaction window for more players to capitalize on the opportunity they created, even if they did so unknowingly. I really also like how the fg formula is an aspect of this game's loop instead of the *only* thing going on, which helps ease the dissatisfaction of losing an interaction while giving something new to capitalize on for winning one. Looks pretty tight imo, looking forward to the finished product.
Aaah the simple design decision of just, you know...telling people whats going on, love it!
I'd love games like Blade Strangers, Divekick, and maybe a few platform fighters like Indie Pogo, Rivals Of Aether, and in the future, Fraymakers. Best not forget Skullgirls, but at a later time given the times.
I don't know if anyone else has commented it, but you should check out Your Only Move Is Hustle (formerly known as Yomi Hustle)! It's a fighting game that slows down to turn-based and lets competitors pick their moves and come up with combos like chess. Seriously so cool for getting the thrill of doing cool fighting game stuff and getting concepts like frame advantage without needing crazy fast reaction times :)
Damn, I had never heard of Resistance in the past but the second I saw the Nidhogg inspired gameplay I was hooked. I don't think I'll ever get into fighting games because of them requiring so much more time and commitment compared to, well, basically any other genre but if I'm roped into a tournament or find that I have mastered every other genre out there this will be a perfect place to start!
Well if ever you change your mind, the upcoming Riot fighting game may be a good place to dip your toes in the FG genre. Its free after all.
This is why i love strives massive COUNTER! It really smacks you across the face when you mash mindlessly and teaches you to be more patient and block.
This feels less like "Better than a tutorial" and more like "An interactive tutorial that is also a full game"
If you haven’t heard of it, you should check out lethal league blaze. It’s like if a fighting game had a baby with extreme pong and it was raised on jet set radio. It also gives me a lot of the same positive vibes you can probably get from this game, just put in a different context and maybe a bit more fleshed out. I think you’ll love it.
Speed Brawl is also another game with this setup of racing and fighting game combat elements... also has a story.
Hope you have a great day & Safe Travels!
Resistance 204X is a unique fighting game perfect for beginners. Not sure that I wanted as a hardcore. There are other games out in the market that I want right now.
this has been a good video
I hope to see some Battle Craze, Duels of Fortune, Robot Heroes and Furia Royale on here! or at least to see what your thoughts on those games are
Holy shit. This looks amazing.
I am never able to play Street Fighter oder Tekken with my friends. But we spent HOURS in Nidhogg.
I've been looking for that "next step" game forever!
Game’s plot sounds like the average day in Romania.
5:12
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I recognise that flag
The fighting cars are fucking hilarious. Resistance 204X looks petty creative, may it be the gateway to the genre for many and a success on its own right.
Great stuff! This really nails the reason why games like Rumbleverse work for me, where most anime fighters fail, even the ones that the FGC praises for their extensive tutorials. It's all about that feedback and clarity!
This game has to be one of the coolest fighting games I have ever seen.
Take a look at Hellish Quart. I'd like to see how that looks from a classical fighting game perspective.
Whoa! This looks so very fun.
I swaer I saw that game multiple times on reddit as it was first developed
I am instantly in love. Both with this game and this new series of videos.
2:36 UMINEKO intensifies!
I like that drumtrack playing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the type of thing you'd hear in a house song?
Lemme buy the game, dammit!
Will you spotlight e's laf ++ in a future video? It's a great example of "if everyone's broken, then no one will be"
Honestly, at this point I don't believe that the problem with fighting games is learning anymore. It's interest. LordKnight said that the future of fighting games is licensed IPs and I have to reluctantly agree. No one cares about Clemenzo vs Areqshu, but you put Monkey D. Luffy or Makima in the screen? Insta-buy for a lot of people, even if they'll never play online. Fighting games aren't inherently hard to learn, hell they're much more accessible than any MOBA, but the genre just has a stigma that'll sadly never get washed away by good ideas.
As a fighting game nerd though, I'm in for this one. Looks like fun.
The idea of fighting games heading to a future of all licensed IPS sounds like a goddamn nightmare.
Part of the reasons fighting games are such a joy to discuss through channels like Sugarpunch is the plethora of unique characters.
I love seeing unique characters with unique stories and unique personalities being created and expressed through the medium if fighting games.
A future where they're reliant on licensed IPs to get anywhere would suck ass since it removes the magic that comes of out of the creative freedom developers are given when designing characters for their games, instead just relying on leaching off of popular franchises, and that's not a future I think we should at all accept.
@@naanbred2735 wholeheartedly agree, but it's something entirely out of our control. The FGC is already a niche within the videogame industry, and people like us who like to discuss and analyze the artistic aspect of their creativity is a niche inside a niche. Even if we convince the entirety of the FGC to reject the notion, it's still likely that a fighting game from a popular IPwould outsell even titans like SF and Tekken.
@@Raxyz_0 And once again we learn that business and consumerism is bad for the art we love
@@naanbred2735 The existence of Smash Bros and DBFZ doesn't stop other fighting games from existing. Established ip characters and totally unique snowflake characters aren't mutually exclusive. Your consumerism is ok but other people's isn't?
@@dandre3K My original point was that a future where FGs are reliant on being licensed IPs to get an audience is gonna suck.
Of course they're not mutually exclusive, I'm just saying it would really suck if the success of games with licensed IP characters were to flush out the games with my "snowflake characters" due to developers favouring the former.
Nidhogg 2 definitely made some incomprehensible choices
Give *Gleam of Force* a spotlight please!
I've been thinking about how fighting game community terms and techniques are so prevalent in the Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring PvP scenes
and how learning to fight in those games is taught through the course of the game.
why hasn't there been a Fighting Game/MetroidVania side scroller hybrid?
it seems so simple
learn the mechanics through exploring and fighting through the metroidvania, and then use that in PvP fighting game matches.
like of all the soulslike clones why hasn't this aspect been adapted?
Guatamelee is kinda like that. It has fighting game moves and is a metroidvania
so satisfying
Didn't know "airdasher" was an official term (you said it, so I assume it is). I used the term "hyperfigher."
Wishlisted.
You gotta do Hyper DBZ, such a cool game
Electric Toothbrush enjoyer
Yomi Hustle (or Your Only Move Is Hustle) is another indie fighter with a spin and I believe it deserves a spotlight as well.
I like new challenger, always fun to find new things so keep going if you want to
Basically if sonic the hedgehog was a fighting game
I played this game from a buddy of mine who streams it is a fun game if you stream can get a demo of it.
6:06 Oh, Anakin…
XD
Is this a new series? I like it!
its a shame nidhog never got a sequel. qould be really interesting
i actually got the beta key too. i love the game but i have no friends to play with
This reminds me of bridges from Minecraft
Algorithm positive comment
Algorithm boost!
Why do people always assume fighting are frustrating because you face a tough opponent?
What about the outdated inputs require to pull off a special moves in most fighting games?
Continuously defeating your opponent to reach the end of the level? They all owe it to Urban Champion :)
Neat
1:33 5:53
Is 204X their planned release date?
I kinda wish some more light could be shed on pocket rumble since it makes one button special moves work while not having to remove health or having to make special moves weak
Man, you need to check Pocket Bravery. Looks too good and plays even better. You won't regret it.
how about Azure striker Gunvolt?
This video makes me wanna see a deep dive into why fighting games tutorials aren't that great, but this video kinda does that?
0:39 o_O wow
Commenting at 95 seconds in: OMG is this a hybrid of SamSho and Smash?!?! EDIT: nope, but it still looks dope and I might buy
"Promosm"
Since you mentioned the issue with crossups there, I think the main problem with MOST fighting games is how often you just can't react to crossups. I've been spending the last two weeks playing casually on fightcade and people there abuse crossups so much it becomes infuriating.
Instead of reacting, try educated guesses. Whenever I tech throws or block mixups, it’s not on reaction, I’m predicting what my opponent is going to do at a given situation.
well cross ups and mix ups are meant to be guesses, that's what makes them strong and valuable to begin with. Both you and your opponent are making a guess on high or low/ left or right
That actually looks sick and I hope it comes to console
When you gonna do Baiken?
Love this video series! I just showed off our indie fighter prototype from our four-person team at a local gaming convention. It was buggy as hell and only had normals, but people had a blast and really loved the movement!
Hoping to have the second character implemented by another local event in April. I'll probably send in a build then!
Do you guys have anywhere were we can check the game or see it while it's being in development? I am interested in the project
Man, 204X seems like a fun, chaotic time!
Also, that seething towards Nidhogg 2... Wanna talk about it, champ?
At 3:38, you make a REALLY good point about how hard it is to get into competitive genres. Just like in FPS games where, although the concept of "point and shoot" or in fighting games case "hit and don't get hit" are easy to understand, its HOW you "point and shoot" or WHAT to do so you can destroy the nexus, HOW do I get my opponent to 0 HP where people can have varying degrees of success. this is supplemented by Educational content through the community of players or wikipedias of the specific game you wanna learn from, but sometimes its fuckin BORING or THE ONLY WAY to learn a fighting game (in cases where not many people play them). i hope this game gets to become a video game with longevity and sales through its single player (that AI was cookin you up im not gonna lie) just as much as it does its multiplayer, cuz fighting game single player modes are really wack.
Very neat stuff: reminds me a lot of Fantasy Strike with its feedback communication techniques as well, like its hit/block sparks that varied in size and color to let you know whether the attack left you at a small/large frame advantage/disavantage. Would love to see these kinds of feedback in games more since it makes it easier to learn mid-match, rather than having to go to the training room and record/recreate and so on: lord knows I would love if Tekken told me how I flubbed a throw break instead of leaving it ambiguous and lost as to what happened.
I'd like to just throw "Your only move is Hustle" out there, its weird but fun and sorta fits in with "weird fighting game"
off topic, but you should totally check out yumi hustle! its a great game in how simple yet effective its concept it is, ive never been able to get into fighting games cause of the tight inputs but yumi hustle allowed me to play these kinda games thanks to its turn based combat
If ya taking suggestions may I suggest Your Only Move Is Hustle or just Y.O.M.I Hustle a turn-based fighting game
This game looks crazy
This looks so cool. Like the Nidhogg 2 I always wanted. A similar concept, but with more meat to sink my teeth into
Lethal League: Smash Bros but dodge ball
Resistance 204X: Smash Bros but football (or rugby if you're not American)
I'm probably being charmed by Electric Toothbrush, but WOW this looks great.
They need to double down on that sweet artstyle, either make the models look like the art, or replace it with sprites.
Its too sick to waste on a "sorta works" models.
Any mention of Nidhogg is a plus to me. Sign me up
A smash bros version of this would be lit
Wow this is awesome
I believe the player 1 and 2 bug is tied to some xinput nonsense
Hopefully they do introduce new characters. Nidhogg literally has just two sprites with limited moves, but this seems to be more character based. Seems like what could have been a cool arena-fighter mode with the platforming.
I love fighting games.
.... what.... that's it That's the comment.
Patiently waiting for the next style select. Talking about martial arts in games is kinda rare for me to find. Gamology is close, but often feels a little bit like it's missing something I'm looking for. I would love to see other fighting styles, if not a game with only fictional ones that are based on archetypes, in fighting games.
Ok, putting Electric Toothbrush from Jet Set Radio into a vid is a great way to get my attention. Good job.
its weird to see hyuns dojo one in a video like this but here we are
Seeing the thumbnail again reminded me of Maxor Incorrect Summary of Ultrakill part 2
Do you know how to parry
"Maybe?"
[Malicious laughter] Time to learn!
How many will initially be confused with NotMegaman, 20XX
I like your video and am interested in the game, but towards the end I had trouble hearing you over the music. Everything else is great!
the effects seem like a little bit much to me, just from watching the video my eyes were being strained so i can only imagine how it'll be if i actually played the game. other than that it seems pretty cool
To this day, I’m copeing for the return of Flappy Fighter
I will not tolerate Nidhogg 2 slander
Are you ever going to do a super move compilation for every character in this game?
got excited seeing a trailer for this, had no idea it'd be nidhogg inspired. can't wait, tbh
Please do more fighting styles in video games videos!
this loooks amazing!!
.... What the deal with Nidhogg 2?
i still miss the harem reviews
Ill algo this rhythm!
So, is Style Select over now?
Wishlisted ASAP
Hope its free
