I knew most, but the shocker was the number executed. I thought it was 7,000. Of course the war of religions was going on everywhere in Europe, but 70,000! I wonder how that compares to Bloody Mary.

Actually if you asked Henry how many wives did he have he would have said two (strictly 3). His marriages to Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves were annulled, so Henry would not have included them in his wives. I don’t think his marriage to Catherine Howard was annulled- so legally she would have been included. Henry would have said his wives were Jane Seymour and Catherine Parr.
Henry did not seek a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, he sought an annulment- a declaration he had not been lawfully married to her. The Pope did grant this (probably because he was effectively under siege from Catherine’s nephew the Holy Roman Emperor at the time). Had it been a divorce Catherine might have agreed because her daughter would have still been considered legitimate. Henry broke away from Rome so he could declare himself the Head of the Church in England and grant himself the annulment.
Also, and I am being picky, I don’t think Henry actually had 70,000 people executed. That may well be the number of executions, but that vast majority would have been executions for common crimes, not political offences. Therefore be sentences of execution passed by lower ranked judges and magistrates. These poor unfortunates would have been executed with no input from the monarch. They were very brutal times.

@@Ionabrodie69 This is such a sad comment. Do you really think 3 paragraphs is a dissertation and that level of comment is someone trying to show off?
Just because this is social media it doesn’t mean we all have to dumb down.

The prophecy by that priest never actually happened. I have heard that his coffin was heavily decorated with pearls and a thick layer of black fur was placed on top. It would be impossible for a lot of dogs to even open the coffin. The coffin was placed inside the church and the monk who “witnessed” everything hated Henry VIII and was a Catholic. His body never exploded too. People are just saying that because he was a bad person, I got them all right :F

Your royal majesty; you must watch out for those Catholics. Where did you read this? I read that his coffin slipped, fell and the lead cracked open.

@@clare5one During those times everyone was religious and if something bad happened to his coffin or him etc, people thought he would curse the world or something, they wouldn’t do this to the King of England, so they placed his highly decorated coffin in the church.

@@queenelizabethiofengland7338 Funny thing, during my research H VIII thought of himself as a Catholic and said his rosary frequently. He hated Lutherans.
Also now bodies will still liquify and rot as embalming does not halt the process. It only allows for a pass from the Board of Health during wakes. Intestinal bacteria will produce gas. The body can rupture.

@@queenelizabethiofengland7338 That sounds about right, there is a lot of misinformation about Tudor monarchs because each of them were divisive in one way or another.

I didn't miss any because I've read everything I could get my hands on to answer "one" question. Did Anne Boleyn ever really love Henry? She had been madly in love with Percy but it was broken up by Wolsey who thought she was beneath Percy. Some biographers say the king forced wolsey's hand; other biographers say it was Wolsey's doing. Anne Boleyn promised Wolsey she would get even and she did. But I never found out anywhere if she really and truly loved Henry or did she not have a choice. After all, he was a selfish king he wouldn't care who she loved. I believe that Henry saw how much in love they were and became envious. He was the king and he should have everything, including their love.

Henry was originally 'the spare' and not 'the heir'. He had also been declared 'defender of the faith' by the Pope, because he had written so eloquently on Catholicism. Oh the irony! :)

19/20: there was no right answer to Q5. Not going to spoil the answer in the chat just informing that none of the answers are correct if im not mistaken. not just the reign it self but even counted from the coronation. Or were there some kind of law that states that you can't call him "King" before reaching that age?
