- In this video I chat with John from Chicago about how discovering Thailand rescued him. Before Thailand entered his life, John found himself grappling with serious debt, enduring the pain of two divorces, and sinking into the depths of depression. However, when he discovered the enchanting beauty and vibrant culture of Thailand, everything changed.
Join us as we explore how Thailand not only saved John from the depths of despair but also gave his life a renewed sense of focus and direction. If you've ever felt lost or overwhelmed, this is a story that will resonate with you and perhaps inspire your own journey of transformation. #thairishtimes #movingtothailand #retireinthailand

His comment about pent up anger is spot on. Western society with it’s materialism, high cost of living, political divide, work place bullying, feminism, gun violence and racism really destroys people’s mental health.
No materialism in Thailand? No political divide? No gun violence? Plenty of all of them.
@@noah_shepherdThose can happens everywhere in the world including Thailand so everyone should keep living in their home countries, right? If so why they come to live here in Thailand. I always wonder about this. Some live here but keep complaining about Thailand. I wonder also that they are unhappy why they don't go back their home. I'm tired of them complaining.
Not disagreeing with your point but have spent a lot of time in thailand. Racism, materialism, bullying and gun violence are also prevalent… some of them more than in the west
@@noah_shepherd Most of these problems exist every where in the world. It’s just more elevated in the West. I should’ve clarified that. Materialism is creeping up in Thailand. This is something that they’re unfortunately being influenced by the West.
Agree@@noah_shepherd
Another soul who fell hopelessly in love with Thailand, welcome to paradise John!
Yup! Bit me 25 years ago on my first trip at 21...keep coming back...
You mean another fool who left University with a worthless degree and a six figure loan debt he will never satisfy. Other than the STEM disciplines, university is a waste of time and money
Hi Pete, long time listener, first time calling in. I roughly worked in Bangkok from 2016-2020, and the Covid debacle informed me I really needed to gain financial independence before returning to Thailand permanently, which I hope to do in 3 years’ time.
Having been stateside for 3.5 years, I completely get where John’s coming from regarding the not necessarily overt, but pervasive sense of anger, and attendant anxiety, that permeates everything.
That sense of casting it off in Thailand, slowly at first, then all at once, is mixed in with the air, but also bittersweet. Just as you thaw out, you get thrown back into the freezer on your departure date.
John seems like a great dude who’s figured it out. I just bought his book and look forward to reading it when I set off to Thailand in a few weeks.
Thanks for another great interview.
Hey, best of luck achieving your dream buddy and thanks for always supporting the channel
You don’t need to wait until the cat dies to move to Thailand. My friend just moved back from England to Thailand with her 16 years old cat and he’s so happy there last year. He’s adjusting well with the heat. Best of luck with your plans and adventure. Great interview Pete btw.
Thanks Nok, take the cat John😂
8:58 He's right about the anger in the US. A few days ago I was in a Costco parking lot, and this clown in a Tesla backs out right in front of me without looking, I had to lock my brakes to avoid hitting him, then he flips me off? Why dude, just why?
Happens everywhere not just America I’m sure in Australia too
If you think that’s bad don’t try to drive in Thailand
Thanks for the nice interview! John looks way younger than 58 !!! Wish him luck to let the shadows fall behind.
27:37 .... yes indeed: Consumption doesn't make happy
Great interview, I wish he knew Thailand before but never too late no? I was curious at very young age and arrived the first time in Thailand when I was 19 and even though I spent much more time in India , I knew I would retire in Thailand and enjoying it everyday. I was lucky to have been working in Thailand in two different time of my life and able to have lived with a Thai family for a couple of years in my early 20’s. Keep the good work Pete!
Thank you to everyone for this video. This was excellent on many different levels. It really resonated with me. It is clear that John was looking for peace ... not necessarily to party. I want the other viewers to know that the University of Iowa writing program that John received one of his graduate degrees from is VERY highly regarded - especially at the time he attended. He had to compete and show the quality of his writing to even get into that program
Fascinating interview! I'm impressed by his honesty and matter-of-fact attitude. His decision to wait it out, rather than giving away his cat says quite a lot about his character. I also appreciate his point of view on getting rid of stuff. I got rid of all of my records and books before moving to SE Asia last year. Felt good!
Great interview Pete. Congrats to John and his book. Got some great reviews of his book on Amazon! I know that feeling about his cat. I have four dogs, if not for them I would be gone living in Thailand.
Cheers Thomas🙏🙏
Good luck to the guy…..seems like he knows what he needs and doesn’t need in his life. Maybe arrived to Thailand later in life, but better to be late than never.
I'm in Chiang Mai right now. It's great
How is the night life there? Would like to try it and have the ability to meet women also. Been to Bangkok, and Pattaya
As a retired socioligist social worker with a concentration on povert and ecomonimcs, Thank you, Thank you for binging this issue to light. Great interview.
I came back from Thailand one week ago ,was my first time visiting the country and my partner and I both feel in love with Chiang Mai we spent 9 days there 😊what a magical place it is!! Specially the temples at night have a special vibe 🛕looking forward to come back in December!
this guy seems a nice dude ,hope he finds his happyness wherever he is at🤞
What does "partner" mean? what ever happened to "girlfriend", "boyfriend", "wife", "husband"? What the frig is this "partner" crap?
9 day vacation experience will be different than a permanent move! I Vacay in Thailand yearly! Don't think a permanent move is for me! Imagine you call 911 for a medical emergency and no one shows up! Imagine you are in urgent need of medical care and the first thing you hear is show me the money!
Great interview Pete, always good to see people finding a way to turn unfortunate situations into good ones! Hope you are well good sir
Hey Jonno, hope you’re well too mate
Thanks for the interview Pete. His story clicked with me on several fronts. My story is a bit different, but the outcome is very similar. Getting ready to move to Thailand, but only when it makes sense. Not planning is a mistake for young people to make, not for us with a few decades of trying it on the fly. I have been visiting Thailand for almost 30 years, and I still come here whenever possible, mostly every year. But soon, my wife and I will join the expat life and we can hardly wait!
Great interview!!!! Having been born in Chicago and then moving to Mississippi, I can see his point of view on a lot of things! I'm moving back to Hua Hin next month and I hope our paths cross in Thailand!
Interesting character evolution.
Adversity does create progress. At 16 on the street my greatest desire was never to be poor so it was very positive experience as I never lived beyond my means.
I went forward with no fear, however never felt freedom. Now in Thailand I am observing freedom and realized I always was free and just never realized it.
So for me, thailand is more of a teacher than a destination. Now pondering where to live as my home in north Canada is very comfortable and relaxing with a good safety net where Thailand has only the safety net you build.
Canada is a great place to live in. Please stay put.
@@Neednoy2yes, i am coming to the same conclusion to stay in Canada at least for 184 days a year to maintain residency.
I love Thailand I love people I love story's I love cat's great start to my day ☘️
I think the air quality issue is as bad in Bangkok and it’s worse because it’s all year round. This is the first time in 20 or so visits that I’ve seen motorcycles using the Engine cut out system while stationary. Little steps ❤️🇹🇭🙏
Couldn't imagine most Thai bikers would do that unless there's a fine involved.
You are a fanastic interviewer.
Thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏
Great interview! Will read the book after steves memoire I just bought. Good luck with your dream.
One of my favorite of Pete’s interviews was with Ozzi Jarvinen, posted 2/23/22. It goes into the issue of air quality in Chinagmai. His comments stuck with me.
Another great interview pete 👍
Cheers Brian 🙏🙏
Awesome Interview Pete..😊😊😊😊
Thanks Joanne🙏🙏🙏
You are a natural - really interesting interview with the writer 😊
Thank you Margaret 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Road to 50k Pete ❤
Yes sir!!!
Thumbs up 👍 Pete
Thank you! Cheers!
I have a friend that lives in Northern Thailand and he has decided that he will spend 3-4 months in the Philippines during the burning season.
Great interview. Let me add.
If your getting a pension, whrn you recieve SSI you will recieve app a 40% haircut if your Ametican.
I think this is important especially when looking at your budget..
Great story. Good for you, John from Chicago. Going to Thailand seems like joining the Mafia. Once you go, it's hard to get out or forget 😁
Sometimes you have to change your environment for the better.
Older Singe Divorced Male wants to move to Thailand...Nothing new here however I still think he needs to take a "3 month vacation" there before he packs up and makes a permanent move. Thailand has its own issues...
Interesting interview. If all the people of Irish ancestry returned to Ireland, it would sink under the sea. My great great grandmother was from Tipperary, and was shipped to Australia as a convict for borrowing a loaf of bread. I'm sure she would've returned it later. She met her English convict husband in Sydney after the voyage from Plymouth. Despite the convict heritage I haven't felt the compulsion to do scams. But sometimes still get the urge to take a loaf of bread for old times sake. ☘😋🍞👍
That's true theres alot of Irish in the world...TAKE the bread brother.stuff em lot thats bullshite they did that to them for bread.so tell me now how after Yas all know where your from do you now all behave like the people that threw you in chains for some bred?that's a complex right
A lot more Irish named people in America/Canada than Ireland.
and they are blessed to have Irish blood in their veins
@@ThairishTimesyou mean Norwegian ? 👀 😝 😂
How about an interview with the guy from Do More Life? He has an interesting back story
Seems like a good guy. His cat keeping him from living in Thailand for 6 months a year though? Americans REALLY have thing with their animal companions ^^ American Cat or Thai Kitty...not a hard choice for me :) peace.
Hey Pete, Amazon link for the book is not clickable.
Hmm it works for me. I’ll get in touch with John now and get back to you

Sweet man thinking of his cat.
Phuket is great too lots of expats. Patong is like 1 % of Phuket the rest is great. Just a thought 🤷🏼♂️ that plus a lot of locals speak English.
Tourist Trap!
For me Thailand has made me grow as person, I agree they western society can be a trap
The pollution issue in Chiang Mai sounds pretty rough; otherwise it sounds great.
It is not that bad so far this year.
@gemox3225 - Even if Thailand banned burning fields tomorrow, you still have neighboring countries like Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia burning their fields. All four countries must agree not to burn their fields.
@@kevinp8108 Oh yes. That's a good point. I forgot about that. 1 school whom I interviewed with in Chiang Mai said the same thing.
The pollution in CM is not that bad.
@@YuChiGongG - This is because you're used to the pollution in China! China's pollution is much worse than Thailand.
What’s the Yamaha T shirt bro?
Muangthong Thani football club buddy
I like that ❤
Mate no way that photo is legit 🤣🤣🤣
Opinions you say.. so what's your honest opinion..😊
on what exactly Jim?
He can bring the cat with him. Just get the neccasary docimrntation.
0:55 it's all I need to know he is blessed with an Irish name...he needs to come home Ireland and find a good Irish wife! Bring him home Pete bring him home. A good Irish wife will set him straight.😅😅❤
The tout he's talking about in Patong is for a Timeshare presentation. No need to create an ominous undertone for something so naive. It's the same in any major tourist market, but anyone approaching you usually wants your money....
He's got some thai friends that want to set him up ! I bet they do 😅😅😅
A classic victim of American commercialism.
How can you be a few years out from retirement after all the debt you had and recently going through a divorce? You look too young for social security and haven’t worked as a professor long enough to receive a pension.
I’m 58. I’ll be eligible for my pension at 60. 1 year and 10 months. But who’s counting?
Cocaine
@@writerjohnmcnally sounds like you got a plan.
Most Americans struggle because its not "America" ask them where their from they name a state in the USA, not what county they are from lol
Neoconservative economics drives a lot of Westerners to look elsewhere... awful stuff
You mean socialism? A free market would never allow somebody to take on debt for a "creative writing" degree. Only government is that stupid.
@@CommanderRiker0 speaking generally mate - heaps of Westerners have got sick of the grind..
@@nickrossetto7804 I understand that, its just very annoying when people give a black eye to "capitalism", when they are really referring to socialism. Ironically, Thailand is way more capitalistic than America. Ergo, a better place to live in general. That I agree with.
Absolutely agree.
You can't write off student debt like commercial loans. The underwriters got paid regardless. In what world does socialism guarantee a profit to the lender?@@CommanderRiker0
He states that, in Thailand, we "feel differently". And, YES, this is the state of US English PhD's today...IF they are Americans. Haha....
Always funny when a person attempts to look intelligent correcting another persons English…. AND is incorrect.
‘Feel differently’ is grammatically correct and implicitly different to ‘feel different’
Imagine being so arrogant to think your second language was superior to an English Professor @YuChiGongG
@@sirsillybilly When we say we feel different, we mean we feel (physically or emotionally) different. But when we say we "feel differently", this has a different meaning. English is my first language. But, I guess, few might guess it.
@@sirsillybilly Please compare, for example...I feel differently about...something. (Thanks)
@@YuChiGongG yes to ‘feel differently’ is referencing about something. To ‘feel different’ is to reference yourself.
I assumed you were Chinese given your name and particularly when you were laughing at him and associating American education. It’s a bit crass and rude.
@@sirsillybilly Never assume anything, My Dear Watson..... (Better to presume based on observations and logic, Watson!)
I love my country England. It's only the weather that is depressing, and for those that bash the west, it's our western money that enables us to live in Thailand. However, the west has destroyed itself through WOKE. No more to say on that issue, you can draw your own conclusions.
💯
What snoring episode. Blokes boring.
