Nice to watch a guy who is very balanced in his life about two cultures. I guess it is not so easy to be apart of mainstream living groups...but taking best of the two worlds is always a very good choice.
At 8:35 Chris talks about his Thai habit of 'just walking off' and the differences in casual greetings between the two cultures - 'hello goodbye' - I would like to hear him explain more about that... [I live in Thailand and am doing pretty well with the language - always interested in cultural tips] Great interview, thanks.
We Thais don't usually declare our departing, I guess. And when we do (commonly with family or closed friends) it is informal and can take many forms, not always in fixed expressions or verbal queues (like they do in English). Just my two cents.
Chris is pretty much spot on and fortunate to have the ability to live in both places. My son is half Thai and half American, was born in Thailand but has not been able to visit America except for 2 years ages 1 to 3. He is now 19. We live in Isaan as well. Very very hard for farangs here.
I have seen Chris on many shows on Thai TV, and I loved watching when you were on Mum 's show it was funny when you tried to list your siblings to the guests
This is interesting for me because I’m about to move my family to BKK. My daughter is 1 and my son is 7. I want them both to learn Thai and you wonder how they’ll be impacted by the move. Cool interview thanks.
I was brought up in Thailand as a kid. If kids go to International schools they are unlikely to learn the Thai language properly. In a local Thai school they will have to speak Thai
Hey mate, it’s Chris from the video. If you choose to put your kids in an ordinary school. Then make sure your household is speaking English. No matter what they’ll get the Thai but English needs to be unkept. I’d say your son will be as I am able to communicate and understand the culture as a native. For your daughter on the other hand I’d suggest extra work with the English. I have a little brother here who has an accent when he speaks English, partly because dad didn’t bother to correct him much. Hope this helps in your decision making.
..haha..cool. Both my kidz (farang nois) went to Mariepitak school in UdonT.. a few years behind Chris but they would have overlapped for a few years I think
@@ThairishTimes Pete, I really like your format, length, expert questions, and editing. I am not into harems, junkies, jailbirds, bank robbers, or human traffickers. Some of those were mildly entertaining and some border on the offensive for me, though it is of course sensationalism (to a degree). None of my expat friends were like that. We were not sexpats, either. My expat friend from South Africa had a UK wife, as did several UK expat friends. Several of us married Thais and one married a Laotian after opening a small business in Vientiane after several years working in Bangkok. The American was a devout Mormon with an American Mormon wife and six children. I like seeing the stories of the entrepreneurs that you have done. First the PR ,he can skip if he has a thai wife. As a single he need get salary no less than 80.000 baht a month / 40.000 if marriage to thai / with work permit and tax to country 3 years.

That must suck been a minority. I grew up in UK and 95% white school with some good Indian and Chinese kids to compete academically with. Then to a Russell group university was 97% white. Only was my masters 70% white with rest been Chinese and Hong Kong. Which was good at that stage for international perspective
I think Chris should realize that getting Thai citizenship might not be as hard as he thinks. Like that guy you interviewed Mark, tried to make it seem like he was a one in a million case. In fact, if you are married to a Thai and have at least 40,000 baht per month income for three years, you can apply. Mark Abbott did people a disservice trying to make it seem like it was not possible.
It should be RECIPROCAL civil and property rights -- like the 300,000 Thais who have with a U.S. green card -- WITHOUT having to change citizenship. Automatic and early permanent residency, like a U.S. green card and several countries in Latin America. If it is not RECIPROCAL treatment of each other's expats, how can Thailand call itself an "ally" of the United States and U.S. taxpayers?
I don't see many farang who can speak Thai better than me! Chris speaks like a native Thai.
100% i speak Thai better than you and unlike the guy in the video i also speak Thai Yai and Kam Meuang, there's more of us than you'd think.
Thea’s great to know, by no means should it be a competition.

Thais dismiss greeting between close relation persons, family members in everyday life. Sometime do formal greeting just for the acquaintances.
