  • In this video, we resolve the ABS and traction control problems on a 2004 Chevy Impala. The wiring problem found on this car is a very common problem on Chevrolets from around this time period. Always troubleshoot, don't just start swapping parts. It can potentially save you a lot of time, money, and unnecessary effort. When you see the part where I take apart the ABS computer plug, just ignore it. It is too tricky and unnecessary. The wire appears to fail further down in the wiring harness. From what I saw of the fasteners in the computer plug, there is just too much risk of messing it up permanently.

    Hello again Trey. I traced out the wires for the right side and found a broken on in the loom under where the axle is. Once I repaired that I was able to ohm out the pins, which are pins 4 & 5 for the passenger side along with pins 2 & 3 that you mention in your video for the driver side. I thought I'd update you and others in the future who read this along with thanking you once again since you allowed me the ability to feel confident enough to pursue this issue. Have a blessed day.

    I have had problems with this for years. I have change hub bearing and no results. I just saw this video and pulled the ABS connection apart blew in it and plug it back in then started my car. The damn light went out! Wow!!! I restarted the car about 10 times and drove around in disbelief. Thanks!!!

      I'm wondering if the sensor being dirty or corroded is the problem with my car. Never a problem until I had to drive it through shitty winter weather here, inches of snow on top of ice and all the ice, snow, gravel, and salt on the highways.

    Good video, I have fixed many ABS issues in the last 4 years and you tested wires that many do not and suspect the hub and just do swaptronics only to figure out that they wasted their money. I like how you tested the in between wire as this has resistance also. I fixed a Sienna this way as the sensor was good but wire was Out of Limit. bought a replacement for $20 at a junk yard as I pulled it myself and tested it before buying.

    Had this issue several times on my 2004 Impala. Turned out once to be corroded connections inside the bearing harness. Second time it turned out to be a pinched bearing wire - the strands were slowly breaking one by one. It would set off the three lights (ABS, Brake and warning centre) when you were turning.... when you hit bumps... heck even at a stop and when you hit the accelerator. Odds are - if you have the three lights come on erratically - backing out of a driveway and coming on when you turn and pass over the curb... or driving along and coming on when you hit bumps... or turn the wheel sharply... its a WIRING issue. Somewhere, either the wiring is shorting out - as you saw here - or its not making a good connection. GM's harnesses are notorious for letting water / salt in through the top and corroding inside. Check these first before some mechanic says - oh, its the bearing... cause these are expensive. and a pain to change if they are seized. And the ABS control module doesn't go that often... I go through wrecking yards all the time looking for shiny new parts and NEVER see shiny new ABS control modules. So don't let some scammer mechanic say its one of those until you check all the harnesses, the wiring, and the bearings. And bearings more often fail on the passenger side... since the tires on the passenger side fall off the pavement and hit the shoulders and ruts there more often than the drivers side tires do... I have many miles on the Impalas I've owned so learned the hard way. Hope this helps someone.

      Im having same issue on 03 impala. All 3 lights coming on. Damn thing scared the crap out of me one time, went to stop at a intersection and brakes felt like they werent going to stop. Felt a crunchy/grinding(like it was trying to engage or something)feeling in brake pedal and thats when the damn trac control lights came on. Slowly been getting worse. Now lights come on just backing out of garage, or slightly turning wheel.

    Thanks for the video. Today I began to have the same issue with my 2005 Impala, and the little bit of online research that I've done so far indicates that the problem is difficult and expensive to diagnose and repair properly. I'll stop at AutoZone tomorrow for an ABS code reading to see if I can get a good starting point to proceed from. My problem is identical to that of others that I read about, the brakes pushing back the first time that I apply the brakes at slow speed after having been parked in a lot, then the ABS and Traction Control Off indicator and warning lights coming on, then the warning light soon turns off but the ABS and TRAC lights remain on. But fortunately (so far) the brakes perform normally while driving at normal speed. The problem occurred this morning moments after I stopped to check and add air to my tires to bring them up to 32 psi cold, so now I'm wondering if the tire pressure sensor system is in any way related. WTF, what can go wrong with a simple electrical wire between one end and the other barring a traumatic physical injury to the wire? Is it defective copper stranding or molecular problem with the copper? A wire cannot oxidize if it's properly insulated from exposure to air. Godammit, the more sophisticated that these cars' sensor systems are made, the more trouble we always have because the warning systems themselves go bad. (I'm also dealing with an airbag warning light that I had ever since I bought the car used.) But in any event, there's no way that I can spend $1,500 or more on this car to repair this. For one thing, the +/-20 MPG that I'm getting sucks, and I need to have a complete diagnosis done because beyond that, the car runs great.
    The one thing that I'd try first if the sensors or wiring harness are suspect is contact cleaner on the plug connectors to clean any oxidation or dirt, and then proceed from there. The worst case scenario is a bad control module or worse, a bad pump. Mama said there'd be days like this. Thanks again.

    I know this is an old video but I had the exact same problem. Watched this decided to go down to the driver wheel disconnected the plug from the sensor unclipped the harness about three clips back to give me room to work. Then peeled back the harness cover found the yellow wire was broke bout 6 inches back from the plug. Patched it with a wire connector the electrical tape it for protection the placed the harness sleeve back on. Plugged it in and no more error. Hope this helps someone.

    BBB Industries offers free access to the Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) issued by GM and other manufacturers. This is a treasure trove of information on known problems with GM and other vehicles. For example, my 2010 Equinox has similar issues, and in looking at the TSBs for my specific vehicle I noticed PIT5062C (the problem with the 2010 is not mentioned in PIT5062 A or B), which describes a bad splice in the wiring harness under the carpet just in front of the drivers seat, as well as a large plug that gets loose from the connector and lets the pins corrode. The plug and connector are located ahead of the front passenger seat and mounted in a high position sort of behind the outside kick panel. That TSB has pictures, but the complete TSB with the pictures is not easy to find. Alldata and Mitchell don't have this TSB at all, as far as I can determine after searching both of them. This is just a small example of what you can find if you dig deep enough. The dealers will never mention these easy fixes. Another source of inspiration is a RUclips video by Tony Lester, who dug deep on his own and found a really bad ground on his 2014 GM truck located just under the bottom left corner of the inside of his windshield under a dashboard panel. Misapplied insulation kept the "grounded" wires on his truck from making good ground contact, causing all sorts of electrical issues.

      Tumbleweeds can cause this issue as well, I was driving thru Kansas a few weeks ago and you could not help but run over the tumbleweeds they were everywhere. That is when my problem started. Dang old tumbleweeds one must of got caught up in the wires and caused my damage. All fixed now, just spliced in a new abs wiring harness. No more alarms. Maybe I need a cow catcher for tumbleweeds on my impala.

    Hi there & great video, I have read many others about the Traction Control service light & ABS light coming on but I haven’t read any with it making a loud noise while the lights are on. When they go off the sound stops. I have an 02 Impala so is my issue completely different because of the loud sound I hear when the light indicators come on?

    • @TreyClanton
      @TreyClanton  6 лет назад

      I can't say, but this vehicle did make noise when turning at low speed. I would suggest checking the abs outputs to see what it looks like.

    • @clubmike2910
      @clubmike2910 6 лет назад +1

      Mine made a load noise when I accelerated like a grinding noise but I think it was just the brakes reacting to the perceived slipping of the wheel. That is also when the traction control light would light up like the wheel was slipping. The wheel was not slipping. Mine was a faulty wiring harness on the left front wheel. After inspecting the wires I found a discoloration on the wire, sure enough when I pulled the wire it came apart. spliced in a new abs wiring harness and now it is running like it should no more alarms no more noise. I like my impala again.

    There is actually a bulletin out there for these. No. 03-05-25-008. Not certain if it covers the 04 Impala though. I have also seen this on Cadillac Devilles. You can get the jumper harness although it is a little pricey. I have seen this happen where they break down between the main harness it goes into and the wheel speed sensor connector.
