  • This week I finished the intake manifold adaptor to run a square bore carb. Next is to bolt the engine on the run stand and fire it up in the horizontal position!!!

    Looking good so far but keep in mind that two strokes don't have a shitload of idle vacuum. So you may have to really richen the pilot jet as it will tend to run lean at idle.

    Man this is so cool. I get a little too used to working in a performance oriented shop everyday where the finish aesthetic is so critiqued, its fun watching someone put a functional piece together with "normal" tools. Its my friendly reminder that a million dollars of fun doesn't require a million dollars in tools.
    I do wanna give a bit of input though, absolutely no criticizing.. just my opinion.
    - If you don't already, grab a hole-saw kit when you can (the milwaukee stuff is pretty solid for the price). You can match the radius of a holesaw bit to the radius of the curved cut you want to make on the inner piece of material (For example, those curved cuts you achieved by drilling holes on the carb plate). It makes life a lot of easier, gives you a spot to get a sawzall blade in, and you won't kill any drillbits if the bit walks into another already drilled hole and binds up.
    - 2 Things about that 1/4 plate you used for the carb mouth. 1/4 is a little thin for the requirement of the piece here. I know that may sound stupid, but 1/4 will deflect more than you think across a 4-6in run (between each bolt hole), and might have a little trouble holding gaskets. This is why most turbo flanges are .5 thick (And I'm aware that turbos little in a different environment, but idea stays the same).
    Second thing about the carb plate/mount is you probably should DIY deck the surface of it before running it. Putting that kind of heat into the plate will have it all over the place in terms of flatness.
    Last thing, and the MOST important. Do NOT buy those cards/plates/sheets of steel/aluminum from any major "Home improvement" store. They absolutely gouge peoples' eyeballs out on those pieces.. Find you a good local steel supplier to source those pieces from. I remember being young, I know its a bit awkward to walk into those places because they don't have the same show-front as lowes, BUT, that piece you bought from Lowes would've probably been sitting in their scrap bin and costed you scrap price. Hell, and you'll learn a good bit from those old guys running the counter.

    • @Jahee-Official

      I can totally agree here @ the "home improvement store" idea. Local-ish to me is a metal scrapyard, who also is the regional metal supplier. Prices are WAY more affordable, and I will NEVER buy basic metals from a "home imrpovement store". I'd prefer to keep my eyeballs in their current location.

    Your persistence and what you’re able to accomplish with such minimalistic set of tools is inspiring! Keep on keeping on! From my experience with small (50-125cc) single cylinder two strokes is that when the path after the carb to the cylinder is real long like that is that it gets funky on idle / WOT. However you have not one but 8 cyl with much larger displacement than with what I’ve been working so there is a good chance it will create enough suction even at idle. I guess we’ll find that out in the next video. When you’re making something that no one has made before trial and error is inevitable - even Elon Musk said that about Space X - “failure is a part of development process”. Don’t give up!❤

    I'm going to make a quick guess here: next vid on this engine will take at least 4 months, and the engine won't be running.
    Not trying to hate at all, I hope you really enjoy doing this kind of budget DIY stuffs. But I see just sooo many issues here.
    Sidenote: I've been following a YT-er who tries to make the most powerful 2-stroke engine. (50 cc) He at one time had fuel (and oil) pooling in his crankcase, which caused some severe issues. Considering I don't believe you can get it running like this, you might as well add a "fuel drain plug" into the bottom part of the header. Quick and easy way to check if you've messed up big time. And if you did mess up, really easy to just fix.
    Sidenote 2: do some research on 2-stroke and 4-stroke carbs. They are built slightly differently, due to the 2-stroke having oil in the fuel, and thus being less viscous? (can't remember you addressing the addition of 2-stroke oil somewhere else in the system)

  • @itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852
    @itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 7 месяцев назад +3

    If you were only going to feed air the way you made that would be fine. But seeing how you are going to mount a carburetor there, the front cylinders are going to run rich and the rear cylinders are going to run lean.
    You should of ran a individual tubes to a plenum where the carburetor would mount. This would more evenly feed fuel to the individual cylinders. Good luck.

      I concur, he could have built a set of right-angle runners and reused the OEM carbs.

    • @astrawally8448
      @astrawally8448 7 месяцев назад

      Complete NONSENSE for at least three reasons.
      1. on any other engine, this is a nonsense statement, fuel is atomised by the carb as air passes through the venturi, so the mixture at any constant engine speed will be uniform - the same - what *might* happen, is that some cylinders might get less air flow (due to restrictions, bends, etc) BUT the AFR will be the same. Those that get less air flow will also get less fuel, because air and fuel are mixed at this point.
      2. this myth has been around years and ACTUALLY you have gotten it the wrong way around - the theory behind this (myth) is that the fuel droplets have weight and will have a harder time "turning" into the ports nearer the carb as the prefer to travel in a straight line and as such less fuel is available for the front cylinders (leaner) and more for the rear (richer). But this is again nonsense as we know that like fog, mist and clouds, fluids which are heavier than air (water) can be suspended in air and be carried with and by it. Again, there might be additional "ram effect" at the rear cylinders (this is true, a tunnel ram in a drag car does exactly this), it will only result in more of both fuel and air getting to the rear (neither richer nor leaner)
      3. (performance) two stroke engines do not just merely "flow", their operation relies on scavenging, meaning there is constant oscillation of positive and negative pressure (pulses) on both the intake and exhaust sides which by careful tuning of the inlet, crankcase and exhaust help "stuff" more air into the crankcase, ultimately making more power. It is not purely about the flow. Ever wondered why a two stroke has a weird exhaust shape with a diameter which varies significantly from one end to the middle to the other end
      The last point is why you just can't go and stick a single 4bbl carb on a common plenum manifold in an engine like this and hope it runs with any degree of performance. All of those individual cylinder pulses will be lost/muddled to/by other cylinders which will be at different parts of their cycles. They engineered these outboards with a carb per cylinder for a reason.

      Every time I have seen this type of "custom" make it fast make it fit intake, every time the engine is virtually impossible to tune. Maybe he'll get lucky?
      But yeah I'm sure that engine was designed with 8 carbs for a reason. If it were me I would try to make adapters to make the carbs mount right side up so I could use the carbs that are meant for that engine. Not sure what kind of oil injection that thing has or if he plans on running mixed? Also not sure how mixed gas/oil would run through a carb designed for fuel only either? But I guess it's either gonna work or it ain't.😁

      I don't believe it's going to work either, but my reason is for different reasons, then yours. Yes, the carbraters will be upside down. And therefore they will not work. But my reason is because I believe the antique is way too long. And I believe that it will heat up very fast and it will burn the fuel out before it ever reaches the cylinder therefore will cause a lean condition and will cause the engine to catastrophically blow up. Remember this is a two stroke as well 2 strokes are very Finnicky

    Just my 2c mate....i don't see this being a problem for initial start/idle, more so mid to high rpm/heavy load. By splitting the intake manifold (I know you had to make a compromise due to fitment) the relative small plenum volume of each bank could cause a FAT to LEAN condition running from closest 2 cylinders to carb, to the furthest. To negate this, a balance pipe (crossover pipe) connecting both sides of the manifolds, fitted at the rear will help with cylinder to cylinder fuel/air distribution....That being said, keep up the great work mate, much respect 🇦🇺
