I’d say that’s what the Rocket Launcher system is for. RL10/RL20 CAN fire every rocket at once. Take the Longbow LGB-OH for example. Has two PPCs and 26 RL10s. That’s 260 missiles all at one time. Not much is getting back up from that.
No reloads but who cares when you need that one thing to be completely obliterated

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 4 месяца назад

      @@molenat9973
To send Rocket Launcher equipped forces against something, my criteria are these:
I must want it not just "dead", not just "scrap metal". No, that's not enough. To send a Rocket Launcher equipped combatant after something, it must have wronged me SO severely, that I want no single atom of it's constituent parts to be connected to any other single atom that once was my intended target.
Thankfully, Rocket Launcher weapons are tiny, lightweight, and low-heat, compared to their one-shot damage potential when you fire every single one of them you load on to a combatant at once.
They are the "I wanna nuke that thing, but I don't wanna violate the Ares Conventions" option.
Somebody should seriously look into just how bananas-bonkers-crazy a "missile carrier" converted to carrying Rocket Launchers would be. My guess is you might be able to launch the better part of 1000 missiles at a single target, once.
This would handily accomplish my "reduce to individual non-bonded atoms" ideal end result of sending some sort of rocket launcher thing after a target.
It would also pose a serious threat to (pretty much any) Dropship, or other naval assets. And it would also level buildings trivially easily, at greater ranges than the typical engagement range of Rocket Launcher weapons (the thing's not moving, and when you fire, you probably won't be moving either, and it's not like those rockets stop when they reach the end of the long range bracket....).

For this exact reason, the Israelian Army once disguised their AT missile carriers as Tanks by fitting a fake barrel to the back, so the Egyptian forces don't attack them immediately.
The "Pereh" was developed during the Yom Kippur War in the 1980s but only revealed to the public in 2011, suppressing and censoring any information about them as thoroughly as possible.

For defense, tanks are excellent. Especially the part where if you have any sort of manufacturing capability you can produce ICE engines and simple non-energy weapons. For offense on the other hand, mechs make more sense. When you have to pack everything on a jumpship and transport it to the battlefield, getting as much performance as you can for each ton matters. Ton for ton, Mechs just perform better. Well, actually ton for ton infantry are amazing but infantry aren't going to beat artillery or anything with long range capability.

In the ilClan era, the venerable SRM Carrier was refitted to replace its short range missle tubes with t-shirt cannons. Now reclassed as the "Shirtless Regal Man" Carrier, the vehicle proved to be an invaluable tool for spreading the ilKhan's propaganda by firing t-shirts and other paraphernalia with images of shirtless Alaric Ward. Though largely non-lethal, its payload instilled a lasting presence of Alaric's magnificent physique in the hearts and minds of the Inner Sphere. The schism within the Rasalhague Dominion shows how insidious such tactics can be.

But an LRM carrier will see you and it will continue to pepper away at your armor regardless of what you do about it, and SRM carriers are kill on sight. There's a story I like telling about missile carriers. There was a Campaign scenario with my brother and I, where some pirates deployed some 'Mechs and vehicles to try to destroy a mining operation. They managed to do it, but my brother wanted to play it out so he could eliminate as many pirate forces as possible. There were a pair of Thunderbolts trying to be big "I'm too armored to remove easily" nuisances and were getting slowly whittled down. One SRM Carrier blasted it down rapidly, causing it to fall from a damaged gyro - the other however kept coming.
The SRM Carrier unloaded *ALL* sixty missiles into the Thunderbolt. An arm fell off. A leg had its armor sheared off to the "bone" of internal structure and myomer bundles. The shoulder-mounted LRM pod was rendered inoperable. A missile glanced off the cockpit, another damaged the fusion engine. But the Thunderbolt did not die. Its pilot briefly blacked out from taking too many shots to the head of his 'Mech, and was a sitting duck.
Then the pilot woke up, stood up, and made the SRM Carrier go away before being broken apart by a Hatchetman and Javelin.
Missile carriers can be fearsome, but they have to kill what they aim at - or they're going to be given someone's undivided attention.

  • @nachoneitzscheese

My introduction to SRM carriers was in HBS Battletech, when one ambushed me at point blank range pretty early in the game. I thought "how bad could it be? 4, maybe 5 SRM6 launchers?". And then it started firing. And firing. And kept on firing for what felt like an entire minute. 60 SRMs later, my previously pristine Centurion had been stripped of all armor on one side, and taken massive structural damage to all those locations, on top of the pilot being seriously injured by multiple head hits. Ever since then, I keep a healthy distance from any 60-ton vehicle signature hiding in the fog of war.

    • @bthsr7113
      @bthsr7113 4 месяца назад +4

The "Inexpensive" is key. Sure, not as disposable as Joe Bob in an Savanah Master, but the number of salvos needed to inflict losses of equivalent C-Bill cost as the carrier being reduced to indistinct scrap metal is pretty low. Sure, keeping the thing alive long enough to return for resupply and repair would be ideal, but losing a missile carrier isn't inherently unexpected or crippling the way losing an assault mech is.
Heck, a commander might even use the carrier as bait or force the enemy to choose between different threats closing in.

the situation of the law-suit as I understand it is that Quikscell sued those building copies of their specific designs: the 60-tube, 60 ton types. We see a lot of other missile carriers in MW5 - LRM-20 carriers, LRM-30 carriers, etc. Those are likely still a thing and nothing to do with the admittedly very common 60-60 types that Quikscell claims sole ownership of.

Even in the lowest point of the 3rd Succession War when production of Mechs was limited to a few aging factories that used black box technology that wasn't understood, every planet could produce some war materials. Any planet could produce missiles, MG ammo, and auto cannon ammo. Any planet could produce Internal Combustion Engines. Any planet could produce standard armor. Any planet could produce the parts needed for a vehicle. Any planet could produce LRM, SRM launchers and machine guns. Most planets could produce introtech autocannons. This is the reason ICE tanks were so common for defense. It is also the reason why Mechs got the reputation for stomping over tanks. ICE based tanks are very weight inefficient, so naturally they lose to mechs in the same weight bracket.
The missile carriers are excellent examples of that. While the missile carriers have very impressive firepower, any heavy or even medium mech can destroy them in one volley of fire or in melee. While they are glass cannons, the missile carriers are a go to for tank commanders. Honestly the cost to performance ratio is very good for any missile carrier. Other better armored tanks might last longer, but you're never sure if you'll get your BV's worth of performance out of them. LRM carriers are sure fire performers. SRM carriers are a bit more of a gamble, but they can pay off in just a single round of fire. You can't say that about most other tanks. And if you never send out a single SRM carrier. You always send them out in groups so when one goes down the rest can get revenge.

The SRM and LRM Carriers are my favorite vehicles in BattleTech. They’re such an obvious concept it would be immersion breaking if they weren’t in the game.
And I feel there is some odd beauty to a design so utterly dedicated to a single purpose that it disregards everything else. Getting as many launch tubes into position as possible is all that matters.
Going faster would require a bigger engine so less room and weight for missiles, completely unacceptable.
Better protection means more armor and thus less missiles which is, as stated before, unacceptable. Besides if the Carriers are getting shot at then the rest of the formation isn’t doing its job so they shouldn’t need heavy armor. Just enough to protect against small arms fire and shell fragments.
Everything is secondary to its task, its raison d’etre, its destiny: to provide overwhelming fire superiority, to decide engagements in a few salvos and to just shoot as many damn missiles as possible in the shortest amount of time possible.

SRM carriers are basically an anti-mech shotgun. With the right load and at the right range, it will tear parts off and throw them on the ground. Streak carriers are worse. But you really need to get most of them to connect, because of that armour. In urban warfare, they are nightmare. And LRM carriers make NARC a useful tool. A whole lance of them, homing on the beacon stuck on you... And good call on these being more a concept than universal- heavy APCs make good, cheap light missile carrier bases. For the SLDF, using the Padilla as an LRM and SRM carrier makes sense. And so on.

I got back into BattleTech when MecWarrior: Dark Age came out and played the hell out of it every Sunday, and it lead me down the road of loving vehicles and combined arms armies, which lead me to absolutely LOVING vehicles in "Classic" BattleTech. I'd love to see you do a video on the Ajax Assault Tank, and the Manteuffel Attack Tank, as I've made more than a couple of people cringe and complain when I drop a lance consisting of a Manteuffel Prime, Ajax Assault Tank B, and 2x Ajax Assault Tank A onto the field to shred their fancy clan mechs :D

    10/10 video.
I really want the Merc's kickstarter now so I can have my boxes of LRM/SRM carriers.
SRM carriers are much more limited in my experience. They are ok with hidden unit rules and dense terrain/maps for ambushes. Outside of Ambush? The chaplain will be busy consoling widows.
LRM carriers are another story. The range lets them have stand off and fire indirectly. If you mix in a supporting unit with a TAG or NARC, well someone is getting a lesson on dezgra spheroid tactics via concentrated volleys. Supporting a mech unit or other forces with spotting infantry and LRM carriers is a fun way to make folks remember combined arms lives on.

80 tons, 2 Cruise MP, ICE, 4 tonnes standard armor, CASE, 8 tonnes of ammo, Turret: 20xLRM5s. (This is my optimization of the Heavy LRM Carrier.)
100 tons, 5 Cruise MP (Hover), ICE, 24 tonnes standard armor, Case, 4 tonnes of ammo, Turret: 10x MML 3 "Mech Breaker"
    Preferred Ammo composition 1xLRM, 2xSRM, 1xSRM (Inferno)
90 tons, 2 Cruise MP, ICE, 4.5 tonnes standard armor, CASE, 8 tonnes of ammo, Turret: 3x Tunderbolt 20. "Storm Bringer"
74 tons, 3 Cruise MP, ICE, 5 tonnes standard armor, CASE, 4 tonnes of ammo, Turret: 2x ArrowIV.

I had just finished killing a locust, and turned to face forward. Only to get a face full of SRMs from one of these little bastards.
He cored me out from almost full health. I wasn't exactly taking massive damage fighting locusts and scorpions. And he just one shots me like its nothing, then went home to his wife and kids.

Ah, I found it: The Battletech Tactical Handbook, 1994. For those asking about 'why not all missile carrier', the Handbook goes into that. The Operational Game was an extended campaign where each battle led into another. After each battle, you entered a logistic phase where you had to pay to upkeep all your units, repair battle damage, and reload ammunition. Mechs had a cheaper logistic cost of .10 of their CV while vehicles had between .25 and .30 to represent basic maintenance, food, and medical care. Fail to pay the maintenance and you suffered damage. You also had to pay to reload your ammunition stores. Sure, a bunch of SRM carriers looks good on a single tabletop battle, but what happens when you need to reload all those missiles tubes?
With the lack of a 'hyper sleep' in Battletech and the invasion force having to lug every can of water, MRE, missile, and gallon of fuel with them through space, Mechs make sense for an invasion force. One pilot is cheaper than a vehicle crew which is cheaper than an infantry squad. Couple that with Mech lasers and PPCs not requiring ammunition, and Mechs become the default weapon of war in a post-Aeries Convention universe that bans nuclear weapons.

In the HBS game, I make it a point to bring the most gaudy missile boat I can put together and let me tell you, once you have a Stalker with 4 LRM15s or a Bull Shark with 4-20s blazing up the OpFor, it's entirely a matter of do you run out of enemies or missiles first? Things like the Archer and Catapult almost seem quaint in comparison, but are none-the-less dread inducing when it's the enemy's turn and from off screen the missiles just don't stop coming!

With that said I have a "few" coming with the Kickstarter & as someone who loves combined arms & at the least believes in knowing your enemy I am quickly realizing how devasting units like these can be especially for their BV. MW has never done vehicles justice & that has likely resulted in many newbs like myself experiencing a rather rude surprise when first encountering them on the table.

Id be interested to see if there are any Battletech stories that focus on the tankers etc rather than the mech. Just like a platoon/lance of Pattons maybe supported by a few carriers with LRMs or something having to hold off an enemy assault with mechs etc.
I do like the more nebulous nature of the generic missile carriers. Its basically just a moving weapons battery, what those missile are mounted on doesnt really matter, just that it can get those missiles to where it needs them
