@@chiptvnie Looking at the browser/system config screen there is just a white dot. It should be swirling around. Just a white dot means the coin battery is dead. If his model is the 7000 series it's not that easy to replace. It may require soldering wires to a new coin battery.
That's why the RSOD says insert PS1 or PS2 format disc. Because it can play PS1 games from the get go. Sadly, compatibility was removed from PS4 onwards.

You can play as well but the console get confused when you have the save the game because it will go back to 01.01.2000 as when it comes to date, and time will be 00:00:00.
If you’re ever going to buy a ps2 again, get the fat one. Slims are not as reliable and the ribbon inside can scratch your games if the adhesive wears off.

Any ps1 game can play on a ps2 slim depending on the model. 7500+ models have some compatibilty issues with PS1 games as they don't have a PS1 cpu in them. There is a wikipedia page of PS1 games that have issues on PS2 and for which model versions. Edit: and to answer your question, yes! Plays on all ps2 models
