I haven't gone back to view the the scene, but it looked like a Los Angeles class attack sub rather than a Boomer. They would have to go way north to Washington or east to Georgia to film Boomers, instead of 120 miles to San Diego where Pacific attack subs are based.
There was concern raised over how a mutiny could affect a modern nuclear sub though. In the past it would simply result in a lost ship. Is it possible though that a disagreement between a captain or XO in this day and age could lead to nuclear war? The movie was realistic enough that it brought to light a serious flaw in American naval doctrine: There is no contingency to handle the situation that occurs in the movie. Like the admiral says, they were both right. The XO went by the book, but the captain was still following his last received orders.
+Flash Gordons Themesong Good points, though if the sub had launched it would be totally the responsibility of the President who gave the order and not the Gene Hackman character as the callow Hollywood screenwriters wanted to imply!! Once you give the Launch order, expect it to be followed!! Dummies...
That is why you verify then launch. If Ramsey had launched those missiles then gotten the retraction order it would have been HIS ass because he did not wait for the retraction order which countermanded the 1st message. Remember the Alabama had NOT YET LAUNCHED her missiles when the second message came in and was interrupted. The Navy admitted after the fact they didn't like the mutiny angle but they also changed certain things in terms of the launching of missiles.

Respeto perpetuo a esos valientes soldados.
"Of all the branches of men in the forces, there is none which shows more devotion and faces grimmer perils than the submariners." Winston Churchill. Requiescant in pace, lady and gentlemen. Still on patrol. Ex-Royal `Navy.
We Indians are sorry for your loss. May those Bravehearts rest in peace, including Argentina's first female submariner, Late Eliana María Krawczyk. God bless us all. Peace.
May God rest their souls!
This songs reminds me of a time that’s coming when the Lord Jesus Christ will judge the earth, cast down the wicked, exalt his saints, and make his enemies his footstool.
The U.S. Navy totally washed there hands of this movie simply because it was about a Mutiny. One of Denzel Washington's better films.
Dummies...
Indeed you told them to launch and had they not have had the problems they would have launched within 15 mins
