Law enforcement officials are estimating that over 200 BILLION dollars in pandemic unemployment assistance has been lost to fraud. How did this happen?! How do we stop it from happening again? Thanks to an inside source from Nigeria, I'll show you how scammers filed fraudulent unemployment claims using the names of U.S. citizens.

I work at a chat support agent for an unemployment agency. Little do these scammers know, we can see exactly where they are writing in from.
Every single day, my company is having to find new ways to prevent them getting unemployment funds. Nearly 75% of my chats, are based in Nigeria.
We can’t outright call them out either. We have to submit a form that could take weeks to be reviewed, and by then? They’ve figured out a new way to scam.
It’s pathetic. They aren’t only stealing someone’s identity- but federal funding we barely have to begin with.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to pay a dime, filed a police report (they did nothing so far), and “reported” the fraud on different “agency” sites. I used to work for Money Gram corporate and the BBB in the early 2000's. The amount of fraud that came across my desk was unreal. MG was the worst. Trying to convince people that the person they were sending cash to was a scammer, and they just wouldn't believe us. Sometimes it was coyote scams, Nigerian boyfriends, Nicaraguan gambling, all kinds of things. Now it's worse because of the prevalence of the internet. These scams have been going on for decades and there is still so little awareness relative to the occurrence.

Someone tried to scam me by saying that they were over seas in the military and said how they were willing to do all this things when they met the person they fell in love with. Knowing how I feel about people just saying they will do anything for “love” was a huge red flag to me and also the fact that not only have I been in the military and have family that is currently in the military and have dated people that have been in the military and have friends that are also in the military, yeah, I wasn’t falling for that bullshit. I messed with the person for a while but when he started asking me for money, I laughed and laughed and laughed! Then I said what makes you think that I’d give you anything? If you’re in the “military”, I know for a fact that they would not let a soldier get stuck somewhere without finding a way home or back to the base. Also it was really fishy when the person could not answer where they went to basic or what job/ MOS they had. Two very basic questions. Not only that he kept sending me pictures that were old because he said he was over seas at the time but he wasn’t wearing any of the new uniforms and driving a civilian vehicle. 🤔 Nope, didn’t fall for any of that crap. Looking back on it now, I’m glad that I was smart enough to realize how scummy that person was but it was funny while it lasted.

This one time, someone claiming to be military overseas messaged me on Instagram and after maybe an hour at best they put on a sob story about how they needed my help sending funds to their child back in the US. Our exchange was so casual and I definitely wasn’t flirting with them or anything (to give the impression I was interested in a relationship) and they still came in hard with the approach. I don’t remember what I said or if I didn’t say anything and just blocked them. Usually when I know someone is pretending to be a soldier I tell them they should be ashamed of themselves for impersonating someone who actually does something meaningful with their lives. These people are scum!

I will always stand by the idea that America needs to become much more heavy handed in cracking down on scammers. They need to apply pressure not only to these call centers and the people running them, but also on the countries that are blatantly allowing them the run wild.
There needs to be some serious consequences for the Nigerian and Indian governments for not doing anything to stop these scumbags.
