Actually there is a microprocessor in these chronys. Yours in running the basic Alpha program. Since you have a plug on the side, you can get additional menu features by buying or building a remote. The program is shown on startup. -AL- Alpa, -BE- Beta, and -GA- Gamma. The Printer also acts as a remote. The company appears gone now so all parts are old stock or second hand.
I have an LMBR R2A and it's awesome, not one single error although I've only been using mine for a short time it's worked faultless, records fps and ft/ib or m/s and Joules whichever you prefer and there's none of this silly lighting business causing problems. Only thing I can see the F1 to have an advantage is its larger shot corridor but as I only test at the muzzle the smaller corridor on the R2A isn't a problem anyway. I was going to get the F1 but after seeing the R2A I just had to have one, best purchase I've made in a while. Great vid Steve as usual ;-)
Hi Steve, another great video buddy, many thanks. I always enjoy and learn something useful from you. You have increased my knowledge no end and have made me much more aware of the technicalities that guide and underpin our wonderful sport. Have a safe journey my friend and good luck. Dr Paul.
Incidentally, I bought a master beta and it was dead out of the box. I just ordered a new chrony but it was a Competition Electronics 538002-SSI ProChrono Digital Chronograph. Let's see how it measures up.
Yeah, I would think they would and should modernize it, and offer it at a reasonable price... I have no idea what else is available out there. I bought a Chrony Beta model about 20 years ago... I do a lot of airgun shooting & testing in my basement, so I had to buy the light kit, and I also bought the cabled remote... both are necessities for this type of shooting... along with a 9-volt A/C adapter, because the 9-volt batteries get flaky over time. It still works great... but I only use it for checking the muzzle velocities, and only with my airguns--not any of my firearms... I would destroy it pretty quick if I used it downrange... like most people do ! I probably won't even both looking for something else, unless this one gives up the ghost ! Enjoyed your video !
They need to come out with one that has bluetooth and a smartphone app that is easier to use than their stupid manual, which is a must to figure it all out !
Great points. I have the beta and the plastic shades always break after few months. The little printer is crazy expensive it cost more then a pcp rifle. Its a Dot printer from the 70's lol. To get the extra function remove the motherboard you will see open spot for a button. Just solder a button with wire attached so it can be mounted outside and you now have all the functions. I guess they did this to make money selling different models.
If you have the basic Chrony that just shows fps when adding the button it will give you all the functions of the more expensive one showing fps, shot count ect.
On yours i beleave But could be wrong as many times my old cells stop working but there should be a jack on the side where you can hook a headphone jack plug in it. Take any old head phones cut off jack make long wire hook up a momentary push button switch NC ((normally closed)) to the other end then you don't have to open yours.
off to OZ , you lucky boy , have a great hol` , are you Shooting off by Air by any chance lol , just a thought about the combro cb625 , i found it , the guide & anything else is cheaper to buy direct from combro with free p&p
Only for 5 days in Os, business and mainly in offices so not so lucky especially I will be travelling there and back for 5 days :( Glad you got a good deal on the cb625.
Hello Mr Steve Allan I regularly watch yr videos. Thank yu very much for yr detailed in depth videos about the shooting science they are helping me alot Am very new to the shooting recently I purchased my first .177pcp and I was searching for the right scope for my rifle. Then I saw yr videos about scopes. So what learned after watching yr video was 3-9×50 is more than enough fr me becas I shoot at a distance of 50yards Max Then I got two choices with or without reticle am stuck and got confused whether it's required for me or not. Please help and I don't shoot in dusk or dawn only shoot in the bright day or full dark will the illuminated reticle useful fr me Say for example if am going fr shooting in the dark night and use torch to shoot around 20yards target is it possible to see through the normal scope or not the torch light which reflects from tree or anything else is enough to see the target ?
You will struggle with a torch and a scope to see. It all depends on your torch power. I assume your have been watching or been told about lamping ? To be honest, as a newcomer, I would forget night shooting for a while and learn the basics, get used to it all and then make an informed decision.
Steve Allan thank yu fr yr guidance I will go for Hawke 3-9×50 with AO I think that's enough for my basic learnings right now Later I will turn it into a night vision scope using IR camera and IR torch
I received an F1 for Christmas, but it was a dud. Sent it away for repair and was sent a new one, but it too was a dud. Got a refund and bought the ProChrono digital which is one solid unit, mounts on a tri-pod, measures in both FPS and MPS, works splendid and cheaper than the F1. Bought the optional wireless add-on so I can get the results on my tablet. So I suppose you know what my feeling is about the F1.
You probably dont give a shit but if you're stoned like me atm you can stream all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my brother these days :)
Good review and good points ! I've got the end of barrel chrony I think it's great I long as you carefully mounting it. But all that tech in a 4 ins chrony and loads info. So why not put that into a big one as you say. Keep up the good reviews. 😎👍
Gonna have too get a " printer " for mine ... Now you mentioned it .. that said , I believe you can attach it to yer laptop with some sort of cable ... Ain't tried that , might look into it .. Btw .. ( for folks out there ) the CB625 give " almost " the same readings as the F1 CHRONY ( pro ) ( they didn't have the bog standard F1 but let me have the " pro " at discount ) not enough difference too put me off buying one if I were on a budget .. just a bit fiddly fixing it too your rifle .. gives you more info anawl , fps, mps , & foot pounds .. super review AND honest ..
Thanks Mark. People are talking about modding the chrony F1 with a button and wires. I need to investigate this. The cb625 is great, I just wish F1 would update their 60's tech.
Thank you for the review. You just convinced me to buy the Caldwell Chronograph. It's accurate and in the US, you get the whole kit including tripod and lights for about $10 more than the base F-1. You also get a cable that attaches to your phone and records the numbers. Nice move into the 21st century. I own the Combro MK4 and do recommend it for In the Field, quick checks, but as a primary chrono, I want something that has a memory, and is easy to get information into a spreadsheet. The Caldwell has all that.
Hi you say these can be used inside, i have just got one of the alpha ones and i tried to test it indoors and it didnt pick up any of my shots. Do they have to be used in sunlight or natural light. I had it in a room with gu10 bulbs but as i say i got no reading and occasionally err1. Please help
if you read the instructions, these need a different light source - there is a kit for it - that does not flicker with the AC voltage of the indoor lights - in the UK the flicker is 50hz and in north america is 60hz... hope this helps.
just fixed my basement range shooting, shot 40 .177 pcp pellets with out a single error. 2 60 watt incandecent bulbs in medium base bulb pigtails. fasten to a 1x2 @ photo eye distance. thats it. your welcome. Ron
Hi Steve. I´v got the combo MK 4 and it works god at my PCP ( because no recoil) but at my HW 77 k FAC ( 17 fps ) NO way !! Double recoil does his job !!!!!!! Thanks for the great vid!!
Just get a combro, got both, no contest for power and consistency checking, however I've got the Blue shot App and lead that gives u alot more functionality for the Chrony...
I bet the someone in China could build you a similar version for $5 with your calculator and memory counter lol. You could sell them and call it the Chichrony
the good thing with the f1 is that like you said put down range and can also be used for archery, crossbows, air rifles, etc etc.. rws are good in my hw77 ;P ;) :)
Newer ones from 1998 wont register any rifle i have owned or used at 10" back, need 3 feet minimum. Own two Skans, 2 Combro, R2A 7" and CED M2 IR 7". Personally couldnt care less if gave ft/lb i want ft/sec.
for over 100 GBP it doesn't even do basic calculations like average etc. in this day and age this is really rubbish. looks like a made in china box. not impressed at all with it. Good review though
Yup I agree, the company just seemed to have stuck with their solution and the lack of real competitors seems to have left them complacent with what they have. Shame as for the price point it is the best chrono out there
That model is really just for ad-hoc velocity checking. I love it for that, especially for archery. I also have their Beta Master version ($200 USD), which has a remote display and printer which records all your velocities, then prints each shot and the MIN MAX, Average, and Standard Deviation. I use them both regularly. They each have their place, and are great at it. The model he is showing, I have had for 17 years, and it still works perfectly. I'll buy another when/if it breaks.
Add the remote button and it does do the calculations for up to ten shots. Adding the calcuator adds two more digits to accuracy and prints the calculations mentioned.
Funny review you have no idea what you’re talking about the chronograph Has to be exactly one foot-long measure from the sensors the first sensor to the 2nd sensor That’s the reason why it is the way it is,if it was longer your feet per second would be off if the rods were shorter you couldn’t use the short shade feature because you would be at the limit of your 4 to 6 inches use your head it is compact you have to use the box as a carrying case Duuuu😩😩
You have no idea what you are talking about. The unit can be any length it wants to be as long as the maths for speed is done internally correctly. Ie Velocity = distance / time. Try understanding maths before trolling people with BS.They could have easily make the unit slightly longer to accommodate the rods, as long as they adjusted the maths inside. Really do they not teach basic maths nowadays ????
@@airgunology My thoughts exactly sir. The Combro sensors are about 2 inches apart so all they do is adjust the maths to compensate. Some people really do have no idea. Ps regarding the cb625 its excellent but the bracket doesn't fit on the moderator on my HW97k it doesn't fit on a wide barrel. Ho hum just have to have the 625 and the 1960s Meccano set 👍

I have a LMBR as well.Yet to do the review on it. I love it and prefer it over all the chrono's I have

DrTeno Guy thanks buddy for your kind comments
Brilliant review. Fair and precise

Bad luck, good luck with the SSI

They are just lazy, it works and sells but they are now loosing market share with other alternatives available.
They need to come out with one that has bluetooth and a smartphone app that is easier to use than their stupid manual, which is a must to figure it all out !
I looked at these but I went for the skan it was 200 quid but worth every penny .good review I may get one just to put down range to shoot through .
As always, research and make the choice that works for you. Thanks for the comments

mmm, doing this mod gives you what extra functions ?
If you have the basic Chrony that just shows fps when adding the button it will give you all the functions of the more expensive one showing fps, shot count ect.
Sweet. Going to try this

Shame, crap happens at times.
Until you come to use it and wonder why apparently powers gone up ir down. Worst ones for it.
yet another helpful non bias review. Thanks Steve, you vids have saved me a lot of beer tokens.
thanks

@Dylan Ryan yea, been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself :)
Yeah good review and great critique of the unit. I suspect the vertical market for this chrony technology warrants the lack of innovation.
I suspect you are right and hence the reason they have stuck with a 60's design

first half of the video your praising it then 2nd half your slating it ????? couldn,t work that one out but other than that it was a fair review
if you can afford it then the skan series are better, because they can beused in and aout doors with out a light like needed for the f1 series
Never played with one, hopefulyy I can get my hands on one.
Used a good many of them and own two, indoors or out they wont register a high proportion of rifles used. unless shoot from 3 to 6 foot back.
skan are 10" back ;)
the good thing with the f1 is that like you said put down range and can also be used for archery, crossbows, air rifles, etc etc..
rws are good in my hw77 ;P ;) :)
