Roof chop dilemma... gotta manipulate it to fit 🤨

- We wanted this to be a clean chop with minimal cuts. So we chopped the roof in an unconventional way by slicing the back of the roof at the belt line. We did this so that we can slide the excess inside the car and then just weld the seam without having to make sail panels. Except, we ran into an issue making the rear fit so we're going to have to manipulate it to fit 😵

Chad take notice of the two dents in the top rear corner of the roof. That is your difference. Get those dents out ,that should solve your problem.
Yes Chad I agree. Flip the top upside down put it on some saw horses and work those dents out with a body hammer and dolly. Its easier to get at the dents while it's off. Just saying.
I thought Chad was going to hit the dents out with the rubber hammer when he climbed inside. I love how he welds rust, oh the porosity. Just hit it with a wire brush first.
@jeffriley-yv3ng probably be better than half the cars on the road now.
now why would he want to do that, that would make it easy. maybe he should joloen do it.
Waaaaaaa😂😅😂 he says he has one hour into the chop...😂😅 ..this guy nearly fell over when he saw his cuts and tried fitting it the first time.... Guaranteed he spent hours correcting it before this episode...waaaaa... 😅😂😂...I love watching this guy...its like let me show you what NOT to do...
The reason the end of the tape measure moves is so you can get a inside and outside measurement
Before you even started you should have gotten rid of the dents in the roof. Those dents are putting tension on everything.
WHATS GOING ON WITH THE HOT WHEELS CAR SOMEONE TELL ME PLEASE!!!!!
@@DADDYCOKE2012waiting on parts.
how exactly is it easier on your knees on the floor rather than standing with the dents at a comfortable height to work on them as they are after the roof is welded back on. You must like being on your knees……
@@kbschulze I’ve been catching up but it seems he left off trying to mod the cowl ,what parts are we waiting on also read someone said he gave up on it ,Thanks
@@DADDYCOKE2012 Well, the ADHD set in.. Again...
I have seen many other car builders on youtube but only one who can turn nice cars into scrap metal😊
Ha ha ha ha😂😂😂😂
I'm not understanding why you can't see that the dents have shrunk and drawn the sail panel up and over. If you look at it, you should be able to see that the dents need to be dollied and hammered out and the panel will expand to meet the belt line.
Min.32 showes the whole desaster, but Chad says "looking good, looking good !!"
Hell of a way to manipulate that rear structure lol.
If you take out those dents it may give you what you need
his way or no way.
He got it to fit tho didn't he!! Sure with a little bit of fight but that's how it goes sometimes!!
@Aaronlewis8846 He sure did he's a pro. I just noticed the side with those big dents was the side that was a little tougher figured the dents took area away from that side. I wonder if he plans on keeping the dent.
I'm not a metal worker but if you bang out the dents in the left rear of the roof won't that move the bottom more to where you need it to go?
I guess that’s why you are not a metal worker 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
When those panels are pressed, they have a tolerance. When they are dented, they lose that tolerance. You should get iut back to as close back to the tolerance allowed. If not you can cause undo stress. This can cause fracture in the metal at a later date. So yes they should have been addressed before any metal work could begin. @troymarable7537
This is from an engineering view point. Everyone has there own way of doing things. You learn from your mistakes, that's part of learning.
The top on most cars is smaller than the opening in the body. the pillars lean inward, so it tapers going upward almost like a cone. So simply cutting the top off and moving it down there will always be a gap to deal with. You’d either have to lean the pillars at more of an angle to match back up, or cut the roof into 4-6 pieces to match up to each pillar and weld strips in the centers to fill gaps. Even more complex when the pillars themselves are tapered. In this case he’s changing the angle of the pillars. So the gap isn’t caused by the dents in the corner, they’re caused by him needing to put a piece this big o into a hole this big O and make all the sides touch. Normal challenge for roof chops. He managed to flex those rear pillars out enough without having to hand fabricate new corners but there’s a limit before something kinks up.
As to whether the dents should have been corrected before doing the flexing, hard to say. Didn’t seem to matter here. But doing so wouldn’t eliminate his gaps.
He'll just slice and pie cut for several episodes and still not realize what's going on.
You're nuts for not fixing the dents first. It's obviously in a bind.
And the reason being is I messed up
..and I say-what can I say...???
@@rolfbrunner3016is it not?
You need to take a look at Mike from Bello's Kustom, his a master at roof chops.
Time lapse roof chop bello's 37 ford, a master class in roof chopping.
I found Bello's channel a few months ago. Quite a difference is skillset.
❤❤❤ AWESOME! I learn something new each day I watch him perform.
Of course you have to, it's not a square box 📦 99% have to be cut in multiple places, I've lost count of how many I've done years ago, anyway keep choping 😊
Just watched the 37 ford bellos custom chop, that guy is a true metal artist, does help his workshop is full of goodies
it will probably wind up on the scrap pile like the 40
He can park it next to the jaguar with the messed up chop!
@@warlockborn1031 there you go
Nothing that you haven't done before chad and team
Do you not ever grind before you weld your surfaces?
That's not quick and easy🤣.....I understand trying to provide content but if some youngster is trying to learn metal work and fabrication, this does no one any favors....If someone really wanted to learn, checkout Bellos Customs....The guys is a master
No need to, he'll never complete the car anyway!
Sure you w'll find a way to make it fit Chad keep it up 💪
I know that cat, though I did think he was wearing a stylish white neckerchief till I enlarged the picture.
Watch bellos customs chop a roof and then watch this.
Mike is in another league from this guy.
I watch Bello from time to time. He is great but totally boring, like watching paint dry.
Bellos ... the master metal man!
@@markyaz901oh,you more like headless chicken running around
Mike is probably shaking his head. I don’t think watching Bellos is like ‘Paint Drying’. Perfection takes longer than 30 days…
You as I said before are absolutely amazing as the example you just gave especially the
13 inches on each side between the belt-lines and the getting the rear of the roof up against
the rear belt-line area. absolutely amazing.
twist in body work compensates for the twist in the chassis 😂😂😂
Chad I love the way you Chopped the Top on this Car! It looks GREAT, I especially like the way it looks when you’re in Front of it!! It has almost a Mail Slot front window! This is Going to be a Stylish and Slightly Gangsta Ride! Keep up the good work, Shoutout to Jolene for her Camera work and other things she does for the show! 🔥🚗🤴🏻& 👸🏻❤️💯
Looks like a twist in that rear window!
4 hours later and most are still looking for a frame rak. He has the hot rod 1/10 done already.
Love the authenticity of the show team HILTZ 🤘🏻
Hey Chad & Jolene, the roof is looking good so far! A bit of a fight on the damaged side but, you got it Chad! Jolene nice job as always with the video and production! Are you excited Jolene to be getting a more powerful and better looking car to race? You will definitely have a lot more fun with the V8 engine!
I’ve watched countless shows on roof chops, fact is it is not easy, and this is not the way to do it. If you are using this as a tutorial for a chop, find another channel, if you watch it as entertainment then keep watching.
Watch the Old Iron Workshop chop a roof, then watch this....
The dent in my head is causing you grief, Chad. You need to fly down here right now and fix my head before you weld that top on...
I never get bored watching you. I offer nothing advice-wise because I get this for a simple like a day. I appreciate what you two put up for content and what you tolerate... Keep on truckin'
The shine from the top of your head nearly blinded me 🔆🤪
Love this part of your builds. Seeing the "look' come together. My favorite.
A friend of mine had one of those plymouths when I was in high school. It had wood spoke wheels made out of oak and a big square hole covered with canvas in the roof. There was chicken wire under the canvas which was the antenna for the radio. It was a really nice car with those suicide doors….
You’re doing great and see the quality of experience by you both and a pleasure watching this project.❤
Take the dents out of that corner
That's PATINA!
I like that you are following the original lines on the roof chop, it makes it look factory.
Crawling in and out of that car seems like a good way to stay fit.
Great work guys 😎👍
You should take the dents out of the roof first
Why cant chad get an auto dark helmet
Jolene would love it too.
I use mine all the time and they not that costly
I think they are.
It is… 🙄
“I don’t want to dent it. I DON’T want to dent it!”, etc.
*hits it with a hammer
😂
Loving this chop Chad!
Adding a preload to parts does not make it tight and right, it just adds extra tension.
Chad loves this part of the build the most....loves welding loves putting things together, not so much into the finer finishing touches....but he is good at what he does....gooooo Chad. Not to say he can't do the rest ...
There's two huge crater'[s that need relief This isn't a body man this is a Chop Shop please buy me cut off wheels!!!!!
Another day another challenge
*another chop
@BadChad you are brilliant. Thank you for all your efforts putting out great content! (You too @Jolene ) thank you
Awesome job chad thank you for teaching me!!! Very your channel

"i'm not a car builder, but I watched a lot of shows and this isn't how you do anything" says the guy who watches and does nothing....
Il ne s·arrête pas Bad !! c·est un forcené de la ferraille !! il est trés fort ...
Why not use HEAT, you know, a torch? To help move metal more easily instead of brute force and a BFH
Tell us exactly how and where you would have used heat.
im no expert but im sure they said to do a chop properly cut the roof in quaters attach then re sheet roof, and dont weld over rust just my thought
Sorry those welds look just like glob of melted coat hanger, it looks like little or no penatration occured.
Buy some tig rod next time you get gas for welder!
It's more than likely that side is shorter due to the dents in the roof as dents shrink panels
It has already started looking good❤❤
Another Genius transformation under process
My boss used to call coat hanger acid rod!
yes i wood also the dents my be the problem why it is short to fit the roof
I would agree that hammering out the dents would have relieved the tension
Hi Chad ,hi Jo, and my Fina girl! (whom I love) ! Maybe the roof dents should have been done first ? omo ! just for that extra little bit of stretch? Still looking ok.
Great work... I've seen other fabrication use the same technique
Also, why are you guys so worried about the dents. Get the rooftop nailed down, and then you take care of the dents
Hey Chad and Jolene, reconnecting the chopped roof is going well.. With the help of some strong C Clamps and Chad making his plan and working his plan.
No, it's not. Look at the carnage he's creating that's in n no way going good
@richardharris492 what carnage? Explain yourself
Hi Chad I see a guy made a good gesture saying you should get the body sandblasted or dipped so the metal is clean so you are welding on clean metal instead of it being rusty. Soda blasting is the way to go so you won't warp the metal.
Bellos is the man
Not only are the dents creating a smaller panel than the other side, You should never weld both ends solid and try stretching the middle together. The amount of tension on that roof now will surely create issues down the road…
Gives the car character leave the dents alone !!
Jolene did you notice the rounded molded areas that could be percieved as frame to help guide how you want to paint. They are fluid and dynamic molded lke feature on this car.
Show Top.Santa Catarina Brasil.
Can you post on Jolene's channel how to grind the weld to mold with the body. Sorry I am about to do this as well.
Hi all,
I have been waiting for this video since you started it I know it will be good
This is classic Bad Chad teaching that I like so much.
Chad you have to get the dents out of the roof they are putting in a bind
You need to tack the short side first then run the saw blades through the other side and told it's the same
You could always make it a rat rod
I think your biggest problem on the driver’s side, is from all the dents in your roof, that’s why the metal is pulled tighter..
Hey guys. Would love to see some before and after shots of the chops that you guys do. Perhaps mark out a camera (and wheel) position on the floor to line the shots up? Flick between them a few times in video post production?
BAD CHAD!
It looks to me that the 1/8 that you were off was caused by the 1inch width of the tape and the curve of the drip rail. If that makes sense
Chad, you say those old cars weren’t precisely built. In this case I have to disagree. The roof fit the body just fine. It was not built to be chopped.
Technically nothing is built to be chopped. You make due with what you got and do what you gotta do to make it work. Which Chad is good at. Always improvising. Most of his cars are just for views and collections to store in his garage anyways. But I thought we all knew that by now. Every single video we read comment after comment to do this and do that when in reality he is going to do what he wants regardless what anyone says. The negative comments always fall on deaf ears. But keep em comin because I like the drama lol.
Awesome job Chad getting the back tack back together. All the haters didn't think you could without fixing the dents in roof first. Once again you proved them wrong.
It appears to me that Chad proved To the haters that he could do it.
Are the gaps in the back window caused by the roof hitting the trunk hinges?
Hola Chad thanks, good job, greetings to Jo. blessings from Argentina...South America...well to the south
What is the reason for using a wire coat hanger?? Why not just tig weld it?? Seems to just half-ass stuff
Looking fantastic

You guys are Cooler Than Dang It!
No doubt in my mind
Chad good job.just proved to people that you can do it.Dents ? what dents?
Good evening Jolene and chad and crew and I hope you all had a wonderful weekend
Not sure why he needs the coat hanger. Looks like an easy gap to fill. Again hire a welder. Save time and money.
Then you have never tried welding rusted thin metal its a pain.
Well done Chad!!!
WELL DONE GREAT JOB WELDING ON ROFF NICE QUIET WITH OUT NATE & DOUG YOU ON YOUR OWN YOU CAN DO IT BRO BAD CHAD HAAAA THANKS SIS JOLE FOR VIDEO GREAT. FROM DEAF GUY BRO FRANKIE.
I will say looks good from the side.I would want rear window a little bigger. Keep up great work Jolene.
Just a bit of manipulation
You. Always remove the stress on the metal before fitting those dents cause distance and stored energy pulling all the outside metal in to the dent
That chop looks sweet !! She will be a mean machine ❤ The old school hot rods
Hi Jolene and Chad hope you all had a nice day. When you get it done Chad I would like to see you sand blast it and put it under primer and then paint it. God bless and have a blessed evening and night
No primer or paint. AS IS - PATINA
@jamesgould7583 different strokes for different folks
The dents are part of the patina.
I was thinking the same thing, but then I thought, what are you thinking man!? It’s gonna be fun watching him pound them out! 😂
Awesome, Thanks
I don’t think he plans to take out the dents. It’s a hot rod drag car. It’s cool as is.Leave the dents, Leave the patina, go fast Jolene. That’s the plan.
Is Chad a CERTIFIED welder, or is he self taught?
Incredible work Chad
Great job Chad looking good 😊
