FINALLY saw a video where it's suggested to use all-natural , UNSALTED peanut butter...thank you!!! It's the only kind I buy to feed my wild birds, and my pet parrot, Chico...never made the bird bell, but gonna do so this weekend......I have large bow window in my kitchen where I sit and watch my bird friends visit all year long here in New Hampshire....they also appreciate the heated bird bath...I subscribed to your website, can't wait to see more from you..Thanks again!
Thank you Karen! So glad you are here and yes … I always use the unsalted natural and the birds love it … especially the woodpeckers.. we have so many this year! Best to you and Chico! Look forward to hearing more from you:)))
Love the sleet sounds…. Thank you for taking care of our feathered friends in these harsh winter months. Going to Walmart to get some suet today. I didn’t know they sold it in containers like that.
How well do these hold up at room temperature? Do you have any suggestions for peanut butter alternatives? My son has a school project that these would be great for, if they don’t melt. But there is a peanut allergy in his class, so I will have to substitute that ingredient
Great questions and thanks for watching. I would try subbing the PB using more lard. I found mine at Walmart. You can also substitute with almond or cashew butter depending on allergies. The birds aren’t too picky:) they love the fat and I like to use the most natural ingredients I can find. As far as temp… room temp is fine. Really hot temps aren’t great for suet. Let me know if they make these… that would be so cool:)
Thank you for being here! I did some research on your question and found on youdoitsuet.com that yes .. you can! You can create pure beef tallow cakes or mix in optional ingredients including nuts, dried fruits, cornmeal, raisins, flour... Thanks for the question! I learned something too:). Happy bird feeding!!!
Hi Deb, Does the dried fruit have to be unsweetened, or is sweetened ok? Are you doubling the recipe for a whole jar of PB? Is the whole jar what makes 4 bells and 4 cakes, or half a jar of PB and one cup lard makes that amount? This was a great video! Thanks!
Hi Jessica … use equal parts lard to peanut butter. I used one cup of each and that combined with the dry ingredients makes 4 of the yogurt cup bells or four dirt cakes poured in an 8 x 8 pan. You can double this recipe just use equal parts lard to PB. I used sweetened cranberries … unsweetened was hard find. Either is fine. Raisins would work too. Let me know how it goes and thank you son much for watching and for your comments:)
Good question:) my squirrels love it! I find putting the suet squares in the suet cage feeders evens out the playing field and the birds have a better chance :) it’s so complicated!!!
Thanks for watching and for your question. Flour and oats are included in recipes I researched from Audubon society and other birding sites so I’m comfortable using these ingredients. It helps to bind everything together but if you are worried about it .. try the other ingredients and freeze them into cakes. Enjoy your birds :))
@mymainegardens thank you so much for your response and education! I have 3 woodpeckers that visit my suet feeder regularly and I love them so much. I want to give them the best of the best! 😀 great video and love your energy!

I have a ton of lard that I rendered in the spring for baking and soaping. I'm going to whip up some suet bells now! Thanks for sharing:)
That’s awesome Cindy! I am sure your bird friends will be delighted! Glad you will try the recipe and thank you for watching and commenting!! :)
Thanks for the quick and easy recipe. I'll try this.

Sounds great , now how to keep the squirrels away from it
Good question:) my squirrels love it! I find putting the suet squares in the suet cage feeders evens out the playing field and the birds have a better chance :) it’s so complicated!!!
If you mix in hot cyan pepper powder the squirrels will not like it. It dose not hurt them and the birds can not tast it. Worked well.
I use a crock pot when I make mine.
Oohh great idea! I would love your recipe… thank you for watching!
that's a great idea, especially since I have 5 or 6 crockpots....
Do you think it can go without flour and oatmeal? I feel like that's not healthy for the birds.

Thank you! We have had so many woodpeckers at our suet feeder this winter. ❤.. small to big ones. Brings me so much joy!
