My Maine Gardens
Добавлен 12 июл 2022
Join me as we celebrate, explore, find success and failure in my Maine gardens. I will share tips and tricks and lessons learned starting from planting that very first tree in our landscape. Come along with me as we explore and check out other people's gardens (mostly with their permission;) and other beautiful Maine gardens. Our season for growing is short in Maine so we appreciate every new bloom and blossom. I'm excited to share my Maine gardens with you!
Turning ordinary branches into a winter wonderland!
This DIY project is super easy, quick and gorgeous! Taking branches from the garden and with a few "ingredients" you can create a gorgeous winter/holiday display! I used large branches for this outdoor planter and placed them directly in the soil. Smaller branches make beautiful indoor centerpieces using epson salt in the base of your vase, you have a sparkly winter wonderland!

Pruning a rhododendron (helping out my new friend)
Просмотров 1003 месяца назад
I love how gardening brings people together. Mary reached out to me after watching my segment on WABI TV5 about rhododendrons asking for advice about pruning hers. I offered to help her out and offered to prune her shrub. The shrub looks great and I made a new friend:)

For the 15th year I had the privilege of serving as the emcee for this event that raises $$$ for cancer patients in Maine. I thought it would be cool to record from this angle to capture the magic of this event. More than half a million has been raised so far and 100% of those dollars will remain right her...

Wonderful experiment. Thank you, so much, for doing this, and sharing it with us. I have to dye some pinecones orange, and yours was the only video that, actually, helped me.❤❤❤
Aww thank you! So happy found it just in time! Good luck!!
What a great video. Love Roger and his garden. Will the roots that remain in the soil after the peony has been removed grow and produce new plants with blossoms?
Great video! So informative!
Thanks for watching! Roger is the best:)
How well do these hold up at room temperature? Do you have any suggestions for peanut butter alternatives? My son has a school project that these would be great for, if they don’t melt. But there is a peanut allergy in his class, so I will have to substitute that ingredient
Great questions and thanks for watching. I would try subbing the PB using more lard. I found mine at Walmart. You can also substitute with almond or cashew butter depending on allergies. The birds aren’t too picky:) they love the fat and I like to use the most natural ingredients I can find. As far as temp… room temp is fine. Really hot temps aren’t great for suet. Let me know if they make these… that would be so cool:)
That planter is tall where did you get it?😊
Thanks for watching :) are you talking about the tomato cage?;)
Hello from Australia! With that lovely Begonia you have there, you should never have to buy another one. They are so easy to propagate from cuttings.
@@mazza_razzza hello Australia! So nice to meet you here and great tip! I imagine begonias in your neck of the woods are incredible! Here in Maine we enjoy them for as long as we can:) until the first frost :(
Thank you so much for sharing this video !
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for all this great info! Looking forward to learning more from you 💚
@@TheSuburbanGardenista thank you for following and for your lovely comment! Stay tuned and happy gardening!!!
Great video! I especially liked the tips about the root slayer shovel and letting the root rest a day after digging so it won't be so brittle. I'm working on a collection of older double varieties and have many planted already, but the oldest are only 3 years old and I haven't done this dividing yet. I only want one of each variety on my list, so I'll be giving roots away too.
@@karenholt9744 thank you for watching. Roger is the best! Good luck with yours!!

Oh that is wonderful. I will let him know. He will love that:) Thank you. There is another video here we shot earlier in the season when they were in bloom and he offered some great tips then too…
I enjoyed doing the workshop with you and it was fun! I would love to do one in Pittsburgh but I don’t think my John Deere would make it😁😀😁
You should be on tv. You seem to be a born natural. Nice work
That is so nice of you! I have a media(tv/radio) background and host a gardening segment on WABI TV5 in Bangor, Maine. Feel free to share your thoughts with the Magnolia Network;). Seriously... thank you for your comment and for watching!!! Happy gardening!!!
I'm curious - what brand of slicing cucumber did you plant? We're having moderately good success with "Sweet Success", but not much from Straight 8. Our current favorite peppers are "Carmen" - an elongated (bull's horn type)variety that's very prolific and delicious green or red or in-between. Our location: a few miles north of Ellsworth.
Interesting and thank you for being here. Mine are the “slice more” variety and holy cow … they are doing great!!
Great easy instructions 👏🏼 thank you.
Thank you! I will be sharing an update soon.
would love to see a follow up video of this basket to prove that the original plan worked and the plants revived.
Yes it works. I have revived many petunias and she(Maine gardens) showed the Petunia plant was not rootbound. It was mostly soil and if this is the case, all that was needed was the coffee filter I use it even On all my pots, it provides great drainage, prevent the soil from seeping onto your deck or the concrete floor. It is recommended that you change the coffee filters every two years.
If The petunia was root bounded. It is recommended to increase the pot size stimulate the roots and add the coffee filters and fertilizer. They are heavy feeders.
Thx@@sungoddes2932
Thank you!
I just cut my petunia hanging plant way back. It looks like it got a crew cut. Afterwards now looking at it I'm saying to myself what have I done!! This video reassured me there is life after buzz cutting a plant.😅
Oh I feel your pain! Make sure you give them some good food and lots of love :) keep me posted!!

Hi! I just posted the video:). So fun to meet you! Team BISONS 2025??!!

Aww thank you! It does take a while:) nice to have you here !!!
I picked one two weeks ago and nothing since. What am I doing wrong?
Are you giving them enough water?
@@02markcal i mean what’s enough? I soak them which i think I was watering them too much. I fertilize them and prune them
@@Mr-C-Codes How hot has it been in the last two weeks?
Nice video. Thanks
@@02markcal i’m in southern california so pretty hot. my soil is pretty dense so i’m scared of overwatering and getting root rot. also i don’t have much space and the way the garden is set up is kind of in the shade so it gets maybe 4 hours of direct sunlight. i don’t think it’s windy enough to properly pollinate… so many variables i don’t know what the problem can be
Hey Deb! New subscriber here! Enjoyed the video!! 😊❤

What potting soil and fertilizer did you use on the plant?
Thank you for watching! I use Coast of Maine potting soil and Schultz plant food fertilizer
I loved this video! It’s the middle of July, we’ve had a drought & bad storms that ruined my beautiful petunias! I’m going to use your technique & cross my fingers.
Oh good luck! Do be patient and they should bounce back. Thank you for watching!
You have to do it. But it will work and fertilize❤
@@maryfettig3378 I did it and they are regrowing beautifully already!
I agree on good soil. In the Midwest we have a lot of clay. I use mowed leaves every Fall & my homemade compost. I own a dwarf bunny to use his pelleted manure as fertilizer. The fertilizer is well rounded. Not just nitrogen. Too much nitrogen, & you get full lush leaves & no fruit. I also use fish emulsion on young plants. Watering deeply is important too.
This is great! Thank you for sharing and for watching. Love the bunny part:)
My sweet cousin with the most amazing soul.

Vermont girl here with dying petunias. you are GREAT!! Just love your energy, fellow New Englander! Much love to you!!
Aww thank you! Great to meet you:) good luck with your petunia rescue project :)) it’s been a crazy New England summer so far !!
What fertilizer did you use?
Hi…. It really starts with filling the beds with good stuff then I used a fish fertilizer last year. Worked well. This year I’m trying a few new things. I planted the tomatoes with tomato tone and will again use the Neptune fish/seaweed blend and I am going to incorporate some cal-mag. Watch for a video from this years beds … fun to see what works and lessons learned. Happy growing!
...............Question: I have beach sand that's been in a sealed, airtight container for a few years, is that safe to use?
That should be absolutely fine. Some suggest using play sand if you don’t have access to beach sand. So this should work. You can add some salt (not table) mineral (I use sea salt) to add nutrients and/or some manure mixed in. Good Luck and thanks for being here!
So glad to find your video! Easy to grow, huh??? This is my second summer trying to grow them and have already had to move it. You encouraged me to keep trying!
Oh gosh I hope you find a good spot for them. I have moved some of mine too mostly when the location had too much sun and the leaves curled. Good luck!!
I bought a dragon wing begonia. Its in a 9 inch container. Its still happy and healthy. When should i put it in a larger pot? I wish you would have shown a different angle of yours so i could see the size of container.
Hi Sharon! Thank you for watching. Mine is in a large pot. Sorry I can’t attach a photo. If yours is thriving where it is … let it be :)
