Great video..... I sometimes mix in chunky peanut butter with the lard, and I save table scraps of ham, pork fat trimmings and left overs from pork steaks and what not in the freezer til I make up a batch of suet cakes... people have used lard for preserving meats for a couple of years for thousands of years... so it works for this application great... and the birds go nuts over it... I'll make batches up with dried fruit chunks as well.... They love it.
Thanks for the video. And thanks for being a good person…❤️💐
Wonderful information and video. Very easy to make your own lard and save that cost. 👍
Thanks for this video, I love to feed the precious birds they make me happy and my husband supports me. I started with cooked rise then I saw they coming to eating and more birds then I decided to put 1 feeder and sunflower seeds, now I have 13 types different feeder and I put fruit also, and different kind of food for different birds. Someone told me you will become addicted to this and yes I am addicted to the birds they really helped me to be more active, to my anxiety, to think better, to enjoy my life and be happy every day and be grateful for everything I have.
oh Len u r my Hero!!!!!!! This is the best and easiest tutorial on how to make bird cakes.. My Cub Scouts thought this is the BOMB!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!
We get lard in an 8 pound bucket at Walmart. I always UN mold my cakes. I don’t use as much seed but more instant oatmeal and cornmeal.
Excellent! I like seed in suet cakes as opposed to pure suet, but didn't know how to make them. I also like the addition of crunchy peanut butter, and oatmeal instead of excess corn. Simple but Great ideas. Thanks, Len. That's about 2.5 times cheaper than store bought suet cakes containing negligible amounts of other ingredients in a mostly lard base.
Those cakes look great. I saw some like them recently-7.00 a pop. I worry about using the shelf stable lard for the birds. Look at the chemical additives. Buying refrigerated lard, aka manteca, or suet and rendering at home would be better. Suet is cheap. I would worry about those chems more than plastic. And the peanut butter should be saltless, which many may not know.
Len
I praying for all the people in Iowa from all those tornadoes! Hope you are well and safe. Great video.
Don’t mind what some rude people say, your doing good!
Your helping me to feed the birds all the way over here in England, thanks mate.👍👍
Just made some cone style, in the freezer and anxiously waiting to put them out. Thank you for this video, Len.
Thank you for the awesome recipe and video!! I recently lost my 11 year old American bulldog and for personal reasons I don't want another fur kid anytime soon. So I've taken up bird feeding/watching. Which I'm becoming obsessed with lol I live in s central ohio and I'm learning to identify so many birds that I'm currently feeding. This recipe will save me a ton of money! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and beautiful photo's/video's. You have a new subscriber.

Your recipe and demonstration are well appreciated.
I found Armour lard at my large grocery store for $3.49 lb, cheaper than Amazon. I also add cormeal. Thank you, wonderful video.
❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your videos. I found them at the right time because I’m having a problem with wasted seed it’s getting expensive. Where did you get your containers for the seed logs?
Thanks for the tutorial. Had the cages that I bought on sale years ago and the suet cakes I got with them were gone in three weeks. Thought about making my own, but wasn't sure the cakes wouldn't melt in the So. Calif. heat. I'll now try it.
Hen Len, came across your channel and hit subscribe when you gave a very informative video and added,”subscribe if you want to but you don’t have to”. Would like to hear more about your photography and if you have a channel for that would love to know about it.
Thanks for the videos Len. Appreciate your shared wisdom.
I started making my own suete too 😍😍😍 i add spicy sauce so squarrels wont eat the cakes 🤣
Awesome. 😮
Thanks for your video
Question how are you able to keep Iowa squirrels away from suet cakes and hanging logs?
I’m from Northern Illinois just made my first two logs 🪵 compress you mention keep in fridge for 1 hour others mentioned 24 hours I’m using 4x 8.5 pvc pipes have my fingers cross!!!
I added hot sauce, chilly flakes and chopped hot peppers. Squirrels ignor and also their big furry buddies, the raccoons. Similar hot square squirrel deterent cakes sell for around $9 -$10 a cake. Made mine for$1.50 . And the birds love them
@@martinturner9295 Southern Squirrels love the heat too.
Put you feeders on poles with squirrel baffles.
I'm definitely going to try this. Thank you!
Where do you get the big wrought iron 5 cup suet holders??
Thank you for the video recipe.
Was wondering, what consistency should this recipe be to know thwir ready to add to a mold?
Thank you for your video and your time. I live in sunny Florida way down south how long will this last or will it last in Florida? Today it’s 93° at 5:31 PM
Thank you for sharing this Good ideas for making your own suet cakes for the birds
This Is Great, Than you
Thanks Barb!!
👍⚾️
What kind of cranberries do you use. Dried or whole?
How do you store it? Freezer? Fridge? In a sealed container in a cool dark place? Thanks!!
Is crisco a good substitute for lard
What's the difference between the gelatin logs and lard ones. Trying to decide which method to use. Thanks.
Lard is much better for the birds. Digest it easier, helps give them more energy, helps them to retain more warmth at rest, and there's other benefits as well.
Please never use shortening. It not only is harder for them to digest, it also gets in their feathers and essentially puts them in a miniature oil slick.
So you don’t pop the suit cakes out of their plastic trays? Will they fall apart if you do?
Alice do we have any lard ya about 300 pounds of it
Do you ever add hot pepper?
Lard at Target is 2.69$ a pound in my area. That is by far the cheapest I've found.
Can I leave peanut butter out
Sure you can.
Laura, in the winter the birds need the lard and peanut butter for energy. It gets very cold here in Iowa. The summer is not such a big deal, but your winter friends will be thankful if you include the extra calories.
Where do you find your lard?
You should be able to find lard at your local supermarket, especially if there are lots of Hispanic people in your area! We have lard as an ingredient sometimes in our food (tamales, anyone?). You can also ask your butcher for beef suet, and you can render it in a pot yourself.
I am looking for the recipe. Mary
Hi Marvin/Mary, the recipe is in the video, go to 6:43 and you'll see it.
That's not bad because the cheapest I've seen them is around $1.50
Save the fat from bacon, ground beef, pulled pork, etc. It adds up quickly!
I do not like having the Bird seed in the Cakes I just use Peanut Butter Shelled Sunflowers whole and the Chips sometimes Mealworms I look as the Birds are eating the Bird seed shells
