My Mom lived to 94. She was over weight from age 30-60. While the craze back then was to eat low-fat, she went against the “grain” and began a no sugar/flour/wheat/rice/pasta way of eating. That was back in the late 80’s, it wasn’t referred to as low carb. When I reached my 60s, I decided I was going to eat her way. She was my role model and inspiration. She passed away last year, living her entire life disease free, med free and active until 3 day before she passed. I will always be an anti-sugar believer. Thank you Dr. Westman.

She actually got involved with the 12-step program, Overeaters Anonymous. She believed she was a compulsive overeater. OA used AA’s 12-steps but it didn’t tell you how or what to eat. My Mom needed more guidelines so she got involved with a segment of that program called OA-HOW (I forget what the acronym stands for). They used the 12-step but also had a food plan. So to remain abstinent, their plan called for no sugar/flour/wheat/rice/pasta. Three meals a day and no eating in between. So in the 80’s she was doing low carb and intermittent fasting and just didn’t know it. Lol. Her friends thought she crazy and amazing at the same time. 😊

My grandmother had some similarities. She wasn't overweight at any point in her life, she largely stayed away from carbs, and her father, my great grandfather lived until he was 97 while being very fit during his last few days. The last time I saw him was when he was 96, and he was both cycling and rowing in his canoe every day, which is astonishing for someone at that age. However, my grandmother was a long time smoker and eventually passed away last year due to lung cancer at the age of 87. Lung issues aside, her cognitive abilities and health were both relatively good before she passed away in her sleep.
My grandfather was a non-smoker who, despite being tall and skinny for as long as I can remember, died at the relatively young age of 84. He ate low carb meals like my grandmother did, but he also made his own jam and his own desserts, which consisted of various cakes and desserts that he would consume daily. He eventually passed away from colorectal cancer. I think you can do certain things in life very right, and still fall victim to other, bad habits. The medical community has mislead themselves and others for several decades due to studies and surveys that looked at a specific part of human behavior, while at the same time ignoring behavioral patterns that are just as important, if not more important when it comes to reaching an accurate conclusion.
The studies on red meat is a prime example, where they have typically concluded that the red meat group in the studies had more health issues, therefore red meat must be bad for health. Not taking into account that a large portion of the so-called meat eaters in their studies were people who over-indulged, lived sedentary lifestyles, and consumed trans-fats and chemicals that clearly necessitated their own, separate studies.

After you fail to drop dead of scurvy in a year or two, you start getting the, "Well, this might be a good short term weight loss hack but it's clearly not sustainable long term", objection.

I base my judgments on results! As a 74 y.o. 240 pounds T2 diabetic with high blood pressure, I don't believe that my eating a high-carb diet was going to lead me to a long life because I was gaining weight non-stop.
Then my best friend of 50-plus years died of a heart attack.
That shocked me into taking stock of my diet and health.
I instantly researched diets and settled on the Carnivore meat-only menu. That lasted only 10 days as I was always a raw veggie lover. So, I added broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, celery, kohlrabi, zucchini and yellow squash, cabbage (red & green), and avocados -- get the picture. I stayed away from pizza, doughnuts, sugar, cereals, corn, potatoes, bread, pasta, beans, rice, chips, etc. If the label indicated high carbs, then I didn't buy it!
As a result, I have lost 30 pounds. I did so slowly. It took me 4 months and I have another 20 pounds to go.
No diet plan ever worked for me as I never went longer than 2 weeks on any diet plan without cheating. I don't cheat on Keto because I am full most of the time. I can easily go 14 - 16 hours without eating anything at all. Not every day, to be honest, but I have stopped feeling hungry and if I eat more, I feel bloated and overly full.
All other diets told me to eat when I got hungry, which was about every half hour, so I snacked on whatever was available in my fridge. Now, I don't keep a lot of food in my fridge anymore.
I have not sat down at my dining table with a typical full plate of various kinds of food and bread in 3 1/2 months. My typical dish now is the meat of the day. If I eat a vegetable, it's usually raw prior to eating the meat.
I now keep my blood glucose below 100 in the morning and around the mid-70s during the day and evening.
I don't test for ketones, but I must be doing something right if I've lost 30+ pounds!
Plus, if I want pizza, I use a low-carb tortilla and homemade pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. I am grateful that it tastes as good as a fast-food thin-crust pizza and better than any store-bought pizza I ever ate!
    Thanks for your insights!

Pepperoni aside, I think your decision to cut out processed foods from your diet is a recipe for success, regardless of whether you're a vegan or a carnivore. They cause so much inflammation in our bodies that both directly and indirectly influence our health in so many negative ways without us even noticing that the food we consume is the perpetrator behind it.
Contrary to popular belief, high fat meals will keep you satiated, combat sugar cravings and won't actually cause you to gain weight as long as you don't consume processed sugars at the same time. If you absolutely have to consume something sweet, fruit is a much better alternative than a donut.

This guy is off his rocker. Life expectancy in the US was 47 years in 1900 and 68 years in 1950. Most of the supposedly low carb authors and others he mentioned were born when life expectency was much lower. Living until your 60s or 70s was pretty darn good for someone born in 1920.

    • @coweatsman
      @coweatsman Год назад +22

The life expectancy stats are a bit misleading because the higher infant mortality pulled down the average. A better measure would be life expectancy at age 18, not at birth. That makes for better comparison. In medieval times the life expectancy was in the 30s but that didn't mean that most people died in their 30s. You couldn't run a society like that.
Similarly the increasing life expectancy in the last 50 years is not because we are keeping people healthier for longer but because we are keeping people sick for longer.

A Nutritional Ketogenic diet is 20gms or less TOTAL carbs/day .. so how can someone who says they’re “Vegan Keto” do that ?? I often wonder when I hear these so called nutritional experts/influencers talk about keto .. whether they even know what it is. Do they actually understand the Biochemistry and Human Biology of being Metabolically Healthy at a cellular/mitochondrial level ? I’ve been living a healthy Nutritional Ketogenic/Fasting lifestyle for almost 5yrs now .. and one of the things I’ve learned over these years is that being Metabolically Healthy is something that can be measured. So whenever anyone (I don’t care who they are) tries to tell me that living this way is dangerous .. I simply ignore them and know that that’s not what my numbers say.

My neighbor has been a hard core vegan most of his adult life, he rarely ate meat, only ate or drank organic food and never drank or ate anything that was in plastic. He worked out pretty much every day, drank kombucha tea, did everything by the book of health. He was an avid bike rider on and on. He got leukemia at the age of 61 or so and at the age of 65 had a heart attack and stints. I also knew a guy who drank a case of beer every single day of his adult life, rarely ate food of any kind, smoked for most of his adult life and lived to be in his mid 80s with pretty good heath overall. I guess my point is you can do it all right and die from the things you were trying to prevent or do everything wrong and live to be old. Its a gamble for most of us and genetics play a big role in our health. We have no clue really nor do doctors, after all they are just practicing medicine right?

Was eating the SAD diet, but with loads of fresh fruit and veg, salads, chicken. Completely flipped the switch. Ketogenic, fatty red meat, butter on everything, fatty coffee, homemade mayo made with avocado oil, not seed oils, whipping cream, cheese, liverwurst, etc, etc and IF. I keep my GKI numbers to where I go into a state of autophagy where it actually starts to fix the immune system, not just for weight loss. Bottom line, in less than 45 days I’m at a healthy BMI, healthy body weight; blood pressure of a healthy 20 year old, mobile, no foot drag, sleeping, energy through the roof, my HDL cholesterol is at a level where it’s protective of heart health, not just “good” and I can paddleboard again, I am getting exercise again because I have my mobility and balance back. Chronic pain in my hip and joints, from poor compensatory gait to avoid falling on my face from my foot catching/dragging all gone thanks to autophagy and keto. If I’m only going to live another 5 years then I want to live it in a state of health, not as a living corpse just waiting to die eating carbs. ❤ KETO.

YES, stress is a major factor. Air pollution, smog, vehicle exhaust, contaminated drinking water, over consumption of over-the-counter medicine...... Yes the amount of nuances is incredible. If all sides could join forces to first get rid of the junk processed foods.

I like the point you were getting to near the end ... 31st minute ... the remote and easily confounded causes of longevity are dietary choices. The proximate and measurable causes are... inflammation, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, HDL, Triglycerides, LDL (suitably broken down), and the like. If a diet produces great numbers regarding those traits, what does it matter the food choice that produces them?

Sugar is added to the formula when making alcohol drinks. This sugar makes the yeast activity of making the alcohol to ferment and get bubbly and foamy.

What kind of stupid reasoning is this? Why is he not saying the reason of death? Maybe a cancer that run in family, accident, infection? How on earth this dude thinks people will give up on keto because people who advocated the diet in the past died at 85 but not at 110?

I’m really enjoying your content. A random thing that I found really distracting is that the light source in your room highlighted the right side of your face from my watching perspective but your background had the light source on the left. I know that’s a really strange complaint but I just couldn’t get the incongruity out of my mind to concentrate on the message.

I was eating a diet of processed crap and felt horrible riddled with inflammation. The inflammation made my body not like vegetables. I didnt have any problems with meat/protein and fats. Once i got rid of the crap and was keto for about a month i was able to bring back vegetables. If i had gone vegan i would have been hurting because my body was too inflammed to except vegetables. Animal protein and fats are antiinflammatory for my body whereas vegetables are somewhat inflammatory regardless of what Drs and scientists say. I know my own body.

I had the same experience. I went 100% carnivore and was ok with it for 6 months but then started having joint pain and couldn't sleep. (Histimines or arachadonic acid?)
I added some veggies back and I'm better. I've since looked into the "eat right for your blood type" and I think that has worked for me, even though some experts say it's ridiculous.

I’ve had brain fog since my late 20’s. The kinda fog that seems like your not really 100% on you game till sometime around noon. Of course I ate whatever I wanted and was 50 pounds so overweight. About 5 years ago I started eating relatively keto and started dropping a few pounds and the brain fog literally disappears. I found keto and thought what the heck. I’ll eat a modified version of it since I love berries, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. Do I eat over 20-30 carbs some days. Yes, but the next day I’m right back to eating right.
