My doctor told me the keto diet was only for people with colon cancer and I shouldn't use it. Instead, my doctor wants me to have a gastric bypass. I kept the keto diet and am now looking for a new doctor.

Glad to see that you are advocating for yourself. I've had to do that too with my GP when I was diagnosed with diabetes in Oct 2021. She wanted me to take metformin, a statin and see a dietician. I told her that you only make one change at a time and that I would try diet first. When doing some online searching about diabetes I learned about the low carb diet and decided to try that (instead of the diabetes diet). I did see a dietician after I started low carb and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs. She's a dietician in the hospitals. After only 3 months I had remitted my diabetes. I've had many other benefits from my new lifestyle. I'm no longer a slave to food which is a huge victory for me. I've also gone from 80kg down to 62kg, 44" waist is now 37" and that's without exercise, only stretching, strengthening for my back and light hand weights.

There are multiple cultures that eat no or very little carbs. In the South Pacific, one group only eats coconuts and fish. No heart disease. The Sami, mostly reindeer and other ruminants. No carbs. No heart attacks if they don't smoke or drink. Yakutians are carnivorous. The ones that don't drink or smoke, no atherosclerosis. Same with the Messai men in Africa.

I proved him wrong. I'm healthy, fit and have absolutely no health problems.

I'm afraid my wife's experience with cardiologists is that of ignorance on their part. Close to 10 years ago she was cycling back from work and had chest pains, felt like vomiting and later in the evening had pain spreading to one of her arms. So she consulted our doctor. The doctor said she had no risk factors for cardiac problems but referred he to a cardiologist just in case. After examining her, the cardiologist said the same thing but booked her for a scan just in case. At the hospital after the scan revealed a major coronary blockage they kept her in and prepared her right away for unblocking with a stent. It was the fact that the cardiologist said my wife had "no risk factors" that set me off to find out why - and led us both to LCHF then keto around 6 years ago. Since then, nor more problem, and now no more blood thinning needed either. It makes me quite angry. The ignorance could have killed my wife, and has probably killed a lot of others. We also used strict keto on my mother-in-law with Alzheimer's, using coconut and MCT oil to get as much ketone production as possible, which stopped her decline - but that's another issue that I've commented on before.

@@pattibond2342 My mother-in-law died a couple of years ago at 95, so she's no longer with us. We increased the amount of coconut and MCT oil until onset of diarhea, and then dialled it back. That was the maximum for her. She didn't gain any weight, and didn't lose much. Strict keto (less than 20g carbs/day) meant not gaining weight, and the body burning the fuel from the MCT and coconut oil probably prevented weight loss. But our goal for her was to maximise ketone production for brain function. I've heard it can work for brain injury, so maybe you could give it a try. If it does work, it will probably show an effect quite quickly (that was the case with my mother-in-law). If not, then you haven't lost anything for trying. You will smell rather "fruity" for the first couple of weeks, as the body adjusts. But don't be put off, it does go away.

I saw this guy a few years ago on the recommendation of another Doctor (lovely person by the way) who was also on the plant based train. It took a few months to get in to see him at the hospital. So you know this hospital is in one of the unhealthiest boroughs in NYC in the Bronx. I was all in, I had lots of heath issues, and I was really familiar with veganism. I was desperate to fix my health issues. Well, he showed zero interest in me as a patient or my situation and seemed annoyed that I was there and wanted to know who referred me. Gave me a few suggestions and stack of photocopies. There was an actually a vegan conference and I asked about it and he told me how to sign up and finished with, don't sign up if you don't think you'll go. Encouragement I suppose? I think this is typical of many of these vegan guys. They love to give interviews and pontificate on veganism. Not so much interested in rolling up their sleeves with real patients. I've learned more and benefited more by Dr. Westmans RUclips videos than I ever did from these "experts". I went back once, having made an appointment. He couldn't see me, ended up seeing a nurse (or aide?) that took my blood pressure and asked me why I was there. Deliver me from the plant based experts.

It's been a long journey because life happens and I could not afford to focus on taking care of myself. Today I acknowledge that I am an ex-carbs addicts that could easily relapse. Keto is a way of life for me. At 70, I am 30 pounds of my ideal weight but I do not focus on my weight; I focus on how healthy I am: no inflammation, no digestive issues, no back pain, no depression, no sleep pbms, lots of energy, active all day long, walking daily 3 miles minimum, stretching, started weight training and built muscles. I feel better than I was at thirty. Veganism is out of question for me. I am laser focused on keeping insulin low by keeping my carb intake under 30gr/day- 20 of which are fiber- and watch my calories. Remember, u all: no fat burning is possible as long as insulin is elevated- and insulin is elevated when we eat carbs.

About 4 years ago, I tried the KETO diet to see what all the hubub was about. I did it for 3 months and then went to the doctor to see what the lab results said. My A1c went from the prediabetes range to 4.8, normal. My blood pressure normalized to where the doctor told me that she didn't have many hispanic 45 year old men with blood pressure that good. I lost 30lbs with little to no exercise since I work in IT and sit down on my behind for long stretches of time each day. But the greatest thing that impressed me was my triglycerides plummeted for the first time in over a decade. Boy did I struggle with bringing that down. The only thing that was "wrong" with me, was that my total cholesterol was a little high, and yet they offered a statin. I was like thanks, but no thanks. I haven't done Keto since or a follow a strict low carb diet. However, I do keep sugar and carb consumption to a bare minimum, or try to avoid sugar all completely. I use stevia to sweeten my drinks and only drink Zevia sodas. I keep the carb consumption to a minimum by not eating beans and rice every day like I used to being Mexican along with tortillas. The only tortillas I eat now are Keto friendly with 4g of carbs. I do go out to eat at restaurants like once a week and I do have dessert like every 1 to 2 weeks. I'll have Mexican cokes once in a while since they don't have HFCS and will eat snickers once in a while since I learned that a Snickers bar glycemic load is LOWER that that of a Banana (don't believe me, look it up) . But again, I have kept sugar and carb consumption to a bear minimum and especially avoid sugar as much as possible. So, just recently, 4 years after I did KETO and 4 years since my last doctor visit, I visited the doctor again because I got some food poisoning that gave me diarrhea that would not go away. Note: I weigh 211 lbs and I'm only 5ft 7in. Not obese, but bit husky b/c I do have wide shoulders and very good muscle tone and them muscles I built when I was young in the boxing gym and later in the Army pretty much stayed with me all my life till now. Anyway, I digress, they took my blood pressure and it was 115/75 ! Oh I forgot to mention that I still work in IT and sit on my behind for most of the day. Folks, sugar and carbs are the real culprits to the obesity epidemic in America, not fat or cholesterol. Heck, I eat lots eggs with the egg yolks every day and cook them on the left over bacon grease mixed with the lard I used to cook the bacon with, all in the same pan. My wife panicked 4 years ago when I started doing that saying I was going to get a heart attack...but I'm still here with a 115/75 blood pressure, as God as my witness. I gave my testimony to my family on Whatsapp and told them the BIG SECRET was to stay away from carbs and sugar as much as possible. Only my dear old aunt responding saying good for you. The rest, CRICKETS. LOL. Too many people don't want to give up regular consumption of sugar and carbs. There lies the problem folks.

Same here. I lost 45 pounds in last 4 months on low carb/keto diet. I have another 45 to go by years end. In the past when a doctor told me to lose weight I asked for advice. Their response was “eat less, eat low fat”. Some would even get that old pyramid chart and hand it to me. Turns out it’s not how much you eat but what you eat.
After 4 months on keto diet, I am off blood pressure medication for the first time in over 20 years. In fact the blood pressure medication was giving me too low blood pressure, like under 100 systolic. My triglycerides are down; HDL is up; LDL is down and A1c is normal. So when it comes down to who I can trust, any doctor that tells me stay away from keto is getting replaced. I am no kid, mid seventies and feeling great.

People like me stuck to LFHC or the SAD 'diet' but apart from looking out and minimizing fat, you could pretty much eat anything including processed/ultra-processed food. This was associated with my increasing A1C over time where I was eating high fiber cereals and fruits and a sandwich for lunch. However, I was a carboholic and loved breads, pasta, rice and beans. It wasn''t until I decided to do Keto & clocking in with an A1C of 10.1 that I was able to turn my A1C around and other bloodwork, but it did take 2 years although I rarely cheated.

I had cancer and was on the vegan diet for about 5 years to help keep it at bay. When I first heard about ketogenic diet and fasting could reduce tumor sizes I was very skeptical based on my knowledge of how vegan diet works but I was curious to hear how ketogenic diet works on cancer tumors. I didn’t let skepticism kill my curiosity and that eventually leads me to understand over time how ketogenic diet and fasting can help with diabetes, cancer, and potentially Alzheimer’s. Being open-minded is the key.

What the carb promoters conveniently ignore is that sugar is addictive and carbs get converted to sugar. So eating carbs like processed sweets, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, pizza etc has a high likelihood to cause overeating and that causes a major problem. Just look around and look what fat people eat in large quantities.

I went Keto and am now 95% carnivore. I am down to 270lbs and I feel amazing. I need no medications now and I feel better than I did when I was in my 20's , I am 49 now. And I ended up seeing a cardiologist because my primary care doc said some wave was inverted on my EKG or something, but everyone else that has done and EKG since says it's not. The cardiologist was a vegan and when I told him I was a carnivore, he ordered every test int he world. They even injected me with some radioactive stuff before they put me in on of the machines. They gave me some shots that tried to make my heart explode, used a sound thing... It all came back perfectly normal, my vegan cardiologist seemed kind of disappointed about that.
