You may be able to be perfectly healthy on a vegan diet. Dr. Westman has pointed out that there are many healthy diets, and often a diet ideal for one person is not right for another person, even for non-health reasons like income level. He is a realist who looks for evidence and disagrees with the "One True Way" emotional, adamant, and personally aggrieved commentary like yours. He even notes that vegan ethical concerns may be valid for some people but in the end are subjective at 13:27 He does not say that Mike is wrong about his veganism, just that he is often incorrect in his statements regarding the family of ketogenic diets, likely including carnivore. Dr. Westman himself has stated several times in the past that there is limited evidence based medical support for carnivore, although there appears to be significant clinical and theory supporting it. He even mentions this at 16:12 where he discusses a scientific (not clinical) paper and notes that a controlled clinical trial has not occurred for carnivore.

All Mic does (as he does in most of his videos) is prove arrogant people suffer from the Krueger Dunning Effect. I especially enjoy his use of Reddit to support his argument. All I know is what I learned in Biology, Physiology, and ANTHROPOLOGY... and that is we evolved by eating meat, meat was all we had during the Ice Age, and we followed animals to survive... when I studied survival skills and was forced to practice what I learned, you will not survive eating plants. Veganism only works in modern society. Also, I worked on a farm, and all of these plants vegans eat require animals to die. Cleaning the combine looks like a crime scene.
@@sonjawalkerreactionscommen3501 I know, but it is true. Vegans have no idea how many animals die to grow their food, or how many animal products are used. Death is involved in every aspect of what we eat. Other than the fact that vegan arguments are biologically flawed, now their moral argument is gone too.

I have been mostly carnivore for about a year now. When I started I was taking potassium and magnesium supplements because of leg cramps. Eventually I was able to stop taking them. I find now that if I don't drink enough water that is when I may be more prone to the leg cramps. All I have to do is drink more. I do not take electrolytes and I do not use more salt than I did before starting carnivore.
Chronic malnutrition is a big problem in the UK population. We have a full time worker in county hall just trying to address elderly malnutrition. I run a charity that actually "feeds up" people at risk. Vit C deficiency is a small cirner if the problem.

I am seriously considering it now.
You are comparing apples and pears. The trend seems to be they choose to blame the meat consumption rather than question if the carbohydrate intake as actually having a detrimental effect. It’s lazy experimental studies to reach an outcome that validates their opinion. Note carnivore influencers always seem to look far healthier in appearance such as skin tone than the majority of these medical influencers
It’s funny how irritated they get! He’s annoying 😂 I’ve had migraines (once or twice a week) and kidney stones (at least once a year) for years and wasn’t vegan nor carnivore. So just few thoughts; 1. there is a medical text from the 1700s where they specify the treatment for diabetes is eating only meat (mammalian) and dairy. So to say there aren’t’t any studies on this (which is also incorrect), seems hugely off-base since the awareness of no-carb impacts on blood sugar is centuries old. This cannot be solely anecdotal. 2. for those of us that eat dairy, I have a hard time buying we’d be calcium deficient. Also, aren’t the “paddles” in muscle fibres, which are used for muscle contraction, dependent on calcium ions? (It’s been years since I took human biology, please feel free to correct me if I’m off base). 3. can someone please point me in the direction of a dietary source of vitamin D (not including fortified sources)? 4. He speaks of brain fog and memory issues on carnivore; I have found just the opposite, I haven’t been this clear headed in 25 years. This was the first benefit I experienced in cutting out all carbs. Also, vegans always seem a dry and defensive. 5. electrolytes - most carnivores seem to need less and less supplementation the longer they are carb-free. But that’s just an anecdotal observation I’ve made. Also, no processed food, equals less sodium; it is understandable an accommodation period could be needed. 6. personal statement: RA related inflammation is down, my hair is significantly thicker, gym performance and endurance has significantly improved, and the first time ever I have not have GI issues. 7. this one is just bitchy on my part, but anyone else having a hard time listening to someone who sounds like they haven’t made it all the way through puberty yet7
Hi! I need things to do on some videos: 2. Unless your drinking milk or cheese thats Fortifed/Enriched (synthetic) with calcium pasteurizing raw milk destroys the natural vitamins, minerals, and lactase found in milk. Calcium requires the parathyroid, kidneys, and intestines to synthesize calcium. So inflammation could decrease absorption. Calcium is needed for A LOT: hormones, blood, muscle contraction, fat metabolism, bone remineralization. 3. Dietary Vit D: seafood, bacon, tallow, turkey, beef liver, pork, fish, chicken fat. 7. 🤣
Thanks, Dr Westman, for your eating advice. This man demonstrates how not to advise the public about diet, especially the folks who are insulin resistant and have the serious health problems that go with that. I appreciate you even more now.
LDL: My meat eating great grandmother and grand mother lived into their 100's without statins. My mother is 93 and had a high LDL and no familial hyper cholesterlemia. Maybe LDL does not cause heart attacks. Why do many people that live long have high LDL?
Theyve discovered its only weakly connected. Your hdl:triglycerides ratio is 80% better indicator or cardiovascular event. Ldl is 20-30%. But you need to have vascular damage to lead to atherosclerosis/heart damage.
It's kind of silly to criticize the carnivore diet for not having enough vitamins and minerals when it has ten times more than a plant based diet. 10:29
Good analysis of another unconvincing Mike viewpoint. From my perspective, i am yet to experience of the things the anti-LCHF brigade keep warning me about. My only area of concern would be a slightly elevated LDL - which is why I tire of associative studies and other theorizing. Everything the ‘experts’ state seems to be based on as many untested assumptions not to mention logical flaws. Perhaps the biggest of these flaws being WHY would the body produce high levels of this protective molecule other than as protection against something else? So, lower the LDL means we are removing protection the body believes it needs (of course, science has always been smarter than nature lol). The famous Familial hypercholesterolemia argument also ignores that many people with this condition do not develop early atherosclerosis which to me would point to high LDL being only one aspect of their condition - perhaps we have just yet to uncover the others and it is one of these that triggers atherosclerosis . Ho hum
Dr David Diamond explains why only a small percentage of those with FH develop atherosclerosis ruclips.net/video/dOzgrhG0xKI/видео.htmlsi=e_C9o8476RYEFFsB. Spoiler, it's not the LDL 😊
In nature there is sodium in almost everything, including most drinking water. The same can be said for potassium and magnesium which are commonly found in any water you might drink. It is well known that animals, including lions will travel long distances to find salt licks, rocks, mud, water, or other sources high in sodium. Such places are neutral and carnivores do not hunt there as it is essential for life. If you believe, as I do that carbohydrates are an addictive substance then the comparison between symptoms of starting a low carb diet and the symptoms of going cold turkey from heroine are pretty much the same.
He thinks carnivores are angry? Me thinks Vegan Mike does protest too much. I went keto/ketovore about 5 years ago, for the past year mostly carnivore and my mood and over all health has never been better. As I understand it, the requirements on a meat based diet for micro nutrients is less due to the bioavailability being great than a plant based diet.
Supplement companies would love for us to think that we need supplements. Really what you need to do is try a diet for a few months and then get tested by your doctor and see if you actually need to supplement. However if you feel like crap ("keto flu" symptoms) then that's a good sign you need some electrolytes.
A vegan diet does not require any health food. A junk food diet is also a vegan diet. A carnivore diet is much more specific and doesn't include any junk food. 53:52
@@Susan.Lewis. good point. My understanding is that a couple of the things that can cause high blood pressure are too many carbs, causing the body to retain sodium, and too little electrolytes other than sodium. The kidneys are good at keeping electrolyte levels in the right place if there’s no shortage of some particular electrolyte.
If it took you more than a couple years, and you still couldn’t get your high blood pressure under control, here are some other things to investigate: 1. If you might have untreated sleep apnea, consult a pulmonologist or sleep doctor. 2. Try using breathing techniques to increase nose breathing, and to promote relaxation. 3. Try to get enough sun exposure, especially early and late in the day. Besides helping the skin produce, vitamin D3, sun exposure at certain times of the day can increase nitric oxide, which can help blood vessels. If anyone is taking blood pressure medications, they need to inform their doctor before undertaking diet and lifestyle changes that may lower blood pressure.
The whole mineral supplementation process is transitional. I pass out on any diet if I don’t supplement sodium. I’m just wired that way. My LDL is high and I am on long term electrolyte replacement medically on a vegan diet (2 years). I’m transitioning to keto beginning next week.
I’m grateful for Dr Westman responding to the video by Mic. Unfortunately those in the church of vegan won’t bother to look any further. I’m a month into carnivore with a couple of slips for curry! Still low carb, anyway I’ve tried to not fall deep into the hole but to keep an eye on other options, I haven’t found a better alternative.
I think it depends on the person. My heart palpitations disappeared, my BP went down. My arthritis in my hands has almost disappeared. I do have constipation. I suspect it has something to do with my gallbladder and pancreas.
Every carnivore I’ve seen looks great in skin, hair, bright eyes. Look at Mic … or any other vegan. It’s so rare to be in great shape as a vegan that they promote the few who are!!, like look he’s a vegan and look at him!!! Rare AF You’d have to search hard to find a bad looking carnivore
All of the nutrient (deficiencies) that Mic lists are nutrients that can be found in beef liver. Some of them are even found in excessive amounts in liver, which is why one should be careful when consuming organ meats regularly. I know a lot of carnivores choose not to consume organ meats or follow a nose to tail principle of eating, but the option is there if vitamins ever become an issue on the carnivore diet. I'm sure Mic is aware of this, but he has videos that need to be made 😅
Yep, with my seemingly lifelong mantra of "if a little is good, a lot is better" I skyrocketed my uric acid levels by eating beef liver 3-4 times a week.
@@diana6842 Ouch! If you consume it that frequently, you risk getting iron overload and vitamin A toxicity as well. I don't think there's a common consensus on how often one should consume liver, but I imagine once or twice a week should be sufficient 😅
Lions aren't transitioning from a high carb diet. I was under the impression some need to supplement electrolytes in the beginning but eventually your body will adapt and you won't need them anymore
Electrolytes really are only need when you're first adapting to keto/carnivore. I don't take it every day. Unless you're an athlete or doing big workouts, you shouldn't need it (just salt your food to taste and make sure you're getting enough magnesium). I've been keto for years.
Really, he wants to believe what the government recommends in relation to food nutrition and micro nutrients when we have been lied to for decades that fat is bad. The world has been eating low fat for years and we continue to get fatter. I’ll be sticking to carnivore - Beef, butter and eggs, thanks.
A vegan I knew told me their doctor immediately tested for iron deficiency and was suprised to find no deficiency. Our lives are busy and it CAN be difficult to do it properly. cheers
It’s a well known fact that early explorations of the Arctic and Antarctica used seal and penguin meat to upend instances of scurvy. Read Julian Sancton’s book, Madness at the End of the Earth, not just for details like that, but because it’s a great book.
I really would like a commentary about the diarrhea part of the myth video. I'm actually on carnivore for about 2 months, lost about 29 pounds, but I'm constantly alternating between diarrhea or having stools so hard it actually hurts to expel. what could be the cause of this? too much/little fat? what doctor should I look about this?
I went through that, it’s a possible blockage but if you get the fat content right it clears. The blockage causes a build up and then your body causes diarrhea. However if you can work out how to get the most fat in without diarrhea it clears. The fat keeps your stools smooth and easy. But until your bile builds up you might get a quick movement
@@Damcarnivore it's really hard to understand this, since ever since i've started doing the diet, i've gone to the bathroom from 1/day to 3~5 days to finally go. and it keeps alternating. sometimes its basically water (this is more common), and i had 2 times where it's so hard it feels like i'm not going to be able to expel. I really have no one to ask for this, since all they say to me is "you need to eat fiber" and nothing else.

My LDL is way lower on carnivore than it ever was on a plant based diet. He is so full of garbage! Most people have their LDL go down on a carnivore diet. It's only a small number of people who have it go up, and, as this doctor is explaining, it is questionable whether or not high LDL is a problem.

I've personally thought that "oxalate dumping" was BS or misunderstood; however, maybe it's something. But Mic going on and on about it, with "you're still detoxing" (even after years) being the most pervasive myth of the plant-based diet, seems like pure projection.

@@thebobser talking about the camera filter to hide the ugly portrait?
You may be able to be perfectly healthy on a vegan diet. Dr. Westman has pointed out that there are many healthy diets, and often a diet ideal for one person is not right for another person, even for non-health reasons like income level. He is a realist who looks for evidence and disagrees with the "One True Way" emotional, adamant, and personally aggrieved commentary like yours. He even notes that vegan ethical concerns may be valid for some people but in the end are subjective at 13:27
He does not say that Mike is wrong about his veganism, just that he is often incorrect in his statements regarding the family of ketogenic diets, likely including carnivore.
@@EvanEdwards you sir are wrong , by definition one can not be perfectly healthy on a vegan diet
you can not get vitamin b12 on it , now a vegeterian diet might get you pretty healthy if you consume a good amount of eggs
"Cleaning the combine looks like a crime scene" made me kind of sad.

Starvation and even just malnutrition is treated with meat and not just any meat…the infamous red kind. 😆😆
I can’t think of a single instance where malnutrition is treated with avocado and plant protein. 🤷♀️

LDL isn't bad. Our bodies make it. It's an important part of our immune system.
That was painful to watch. 95% sarcasm and 0% factually analysis. Also, most carnivores eat eggs with resolves most of the deficiencies he talks about assuming a beef/muscle only diet. Also, if you don’t go extreme (with any diet change), and slide into a new diet, none of the side effects should occur. People are so extreme these days and slide from 100% vegan to 100% carnivore and somehow don’t expect the body to need an adjustment period.
Keep doing what you do Dr Westman. Keeping it real 😊
Thank you, Dr. Westman! Your calm presentation and insistence on good science never leaves me "hyped up." ☮
I think purines may be associated with gout, but red meat, even organ meats, have never triggered my gout. Shellfish may get it started, but shellfish live off of waste, and therefore I avoid it generally. I have controlled my gout with diet since about 5 months after diagnosis(2014). The medical system would've been much happier had I not figured out how and what to eat, and telling me that red meat would cause gout was a lie. When I stick to carnivore, it seems Im healthier than my other limited options
Great confirmation! Noticed the same.
And gout could be caused by at least five things. Oxalates are one cause.
@@hugoanderkivi I don't know about the causes other than dietary. Alcohol can be a common factor among many in your diet. RDA for carbs is like 200-300g (45%-65% of diet). More ppl than ever are living a sedentary lifestyle.
For context, here's a list of carb heavy foods and what 300g of carbs looks like:
1. **White rice:** Roughly 6.7 cups of cooked white rice (45 grams of carbs per cup).
2. **Pasta:** Approximately 7.5 cups of cooked pasta (40 grams of carbs per cup).
3. **Potatoes:** Around 7.5 large baked potatoes (40 grams of carbs per 100 grams).
4. **Bananas:** Approximately 11 medium-sized bananas (27 grams of carbs each).
5. **Bagels:** Roughly 8 large plain bagels (around 37 grams of carbs per bagel).
6. **White bread:** About 20 slices of white bread (15 grams of carbs per slice).
7. **Raisins:** Approximately 3.75 cups of raisins (around 80 grams of carbs per cup).
8. **Cereal (flakes):** Around 4.5 cups of corn flakes cereal (25 grams of carbs per cup).
9. **Muffins:** Roughly 8 large blueberry muffins (around 35 grams of carbs per muffin).
10. **Soda (regular):** About 7 cans of regular soda (around 41 grams of carbs per 12-ounce can).
11. **Fruit juice (orange):** Approximately 5.8 cups of orange juice (around 26 grams of carbs per cup).
12. **Honey:** Around 17.6 tablespoons of honey (around 17 grams of carbs per tablespoon).

16. **Ice cream (regular):** Approximately 10 cups of regular vanilla ice cream (around 30 grams of carbs per cup).
17. **Pizza (cheese):** Roughly 4 large slices of cheese pizza (around 36 grams of carbs per slice).
18. **Sweetened yogurt:** Around 10 cups of sweetened yogurt (around 30 grams of carbs per cup).
19. **Granola bars:** Approximately 20 granola bars (around 15 grams of carbs per bar).
20. **Fried rice:** Roughly 8 cups of fried rice (around 37 grams of carbs per cup).

The science against vitamin c. Really how many scurvy patients have in fluxed the hospitals in the last few years?
Chronic malnutrition is a big problem in the UK population. We have a full time worker in county hall just trying to address elderly malnutrition. I run a charity that actually "feeds up" people at risk. Vit C deficiency is a small cirner if the problem.

I can’t stand listening to this guy - this Mic, not Dr Westman. This ”Mic” is trying to make a name for himself, which in the end will not be flattering.
Unfortunately for the gullible, Mic the pasty Vegan, may affect people’s health detrimentally.

Dr Westman always kindly speaks FACTS! ❤
It’s funny how irritated they get! He’s annoying 😂
I’ve had migraines (once or twice a week) and kidney stones (at least once a year) for years and wasn’t vegan nor carnivore. Once I stopped carbs and sugars my migraines disappeared and I haven’t had a kidney stone attack in almost two years. The nodules on my adrenal gland are gone, and so is the sludge in my gallbladder.

We definitely need to observe blood work of carnivore diet people. As an example, I tested my blood for vitamin C over a year ago out of curiosity. My results came back at less than
So just few thoughts;
1. there is a medical text from the 1700s where they specify the treatment for diabetes is eating only meat (mammalian) and dairy.
Hi! I need things to do on some videos:

There is so much diet confusion. Thank you for this sensible response and clarifying this for me
Thank you, Dr Westman. You listened to this jeering motormouth so I don't have to.
He uses the standard American dietary guidelines and Reddit as his main sources so yeah that tells you everything you need to know
Good analysis of another unconvincing Mike viewpoint.
29:30 so no potassium and magnesium supplement needed on carnivore?
Supplement companies would love for us to think that we need supplements. Really what you need to do is try a diet for a few months and then get tested by your doctor and see if you actually need to supplement. However if you feel like crap ("keto flu" symptoms) then that's a good sign you need some electrolytes.
also called "mineral salt"

A vegan diet does not require any health food. A junk food diet is also a vegan diet. A carnivore diet is much more specific and doesn't include any junk food. 53:52
Quoting Nutrition Made Simple is a BIG red flag
I followed a keto diet for several years and only ate allowed carbs from vegetables and I still had high blood pressure.
4:00 "..high blood pressure and low potassium, they kind of go hand in hand together.." Maybe you should start taking electrolytes.
If it took you more than a couple years, and you still couldn’t get your high blood pressure under control, here are some other things to investigate:
How are you doing?

I can't take the way he says oxalate 😅
Electrolytes really are only need when you're first adapting to keto/carnivore. I don't take it every day. Unless you're an athlete or doing big workouts, you shouldn't need it (just salt your food to taste and make sure you're getting enough magnesium). I've been keto for years.

Eric, when is your next AMA that is early enough for the Western USA? I have questions!
