- Here is a video to show how to use your Hexing electricity smart meter customer interface unit. Mine is a Hexing HXE34 meter and customer interface unit is CIU-EV-KP.
The Hexing interface unit needs to be plugged in to communicate with the smart meter, and in the case of prepaid, the batteries must be fully charged to work if your electricity runs out.
I've shown some hidden codes that they don't tell us on the cover but I haven't shown all the codes on the front cover.Try the others on the cover as well if you're interested.

Thank you. Most of those options don't work for postpaid meters.
The 870 871 and 872 are missing there (phase voltages).
How do you solve a "comms failed" or " comms error" problem?
There are a few things you can try:
1. New batteries in the unit. You need good batteries especially if you run out of credit and the power is off. Even if you think they are fine, try changing them anyway.
2. Something is interfering with the signal. Use a socket on the shortest cable length to the meter.
Also unplug everything in the house and see if that helps. Then try plugging in to find out what causes the interference. For mine it's the 12v DC power supplies (silver box types) I use for CCTV and backup battery power for Wi-Fi.
Your other option is to speak to your provider and ask for a connection right at the meter. It's not ideal but I've seen it done.

Comms failed may be because the batteries are too low to work properly.
Try new batteries.
Otherwise it can be too far from the meter. Use a different socket closer.
Did you fix your problem?
Yes the problem can be low batteries in the CIU.
Hi i need the hack code to reduce consumption
There is no hack to reduce consumption. You have to use less electricity to reduce consumption.
If by hacking you mean stealing, that is illegal firstly, and secondly you are taking away someone else's job and food from their children.
In life you pay for what you use.
How would you feel if someone stole from you?
How does this unit record power in the reverse direction (i.e. injected into the grid)? Does it ignore it, decrement or increment the total amount "consumed". Is there a measurement (and hence code to display) for power going into the grid?
This depends on the power company who need to program this facility depending if they allow customers to supply the grid backwards.
In South Africa that's not allowed yet and I've seen solar installations that send power back to the grid. One meter allows it but doesn't give any credit for this. Another disconnects the customer and registers a tamper condition.
What happens when I run out of electricity? Once run out, the communication to main unit stops and I can not enter pin for more units.
You'll need batteries in this CIU to be able to enter when the electricity is off.
If you have batteries already, they may be too flat to work if you are getting a comms error.
Why can I only get a reading on the 870 request and not 71/72?
Is yours single.or three phase? Sounds like yours is single phase so you'll only get the reply for 870.
Will the meter come on again if i have to switch the main switch off at the DB box inside the house and switch it back on?
Yes. If I switch off and on again it does come back on.
What happens when you have load shedding? Does it work after power comes back on?

I was just scared to cut the main power, because when they installed it 5 years ago, i remembered the guy said if i switch the power off or if it runs out of units, i would have to pay them again to get it activated and for the call out fee. Thank you for the feedback. I will try it. And if all else fails i will just go camping😂
Can one. Buy electricity for this meter online as the vending machines in my area are all down

Is this thing able to turn on while being powered only by batteries? I bought batteries for it but it doesn’t turn on unless plugged so I can’t put in units
Yes it should run on batteries if you've run out of power.
If not, the batteries may be too low to communicate and you get a Comms failed error (this is the most common problem people have - flat batteries and getting a comms error).
how do l disable the low voltage threshold on this type of meter
You shouldn't be reaching low or high voltage threshold.
If you do there is something wrong and you need to log a fault with your electricity supplier.
Make a note of the times it happens (likely peak hours and you are far from the transformer).
Otherwise there is a neutral fault somewhere which must be fixed before you get shocks from your taps or any metal appliances.
What is involved to convert this meter from Post Paid to Pre Paid?
This is simply a matter of programming the meter to do this.
It has to be done by your electricity provider who is probably going to charge a fee to convert to prepaid.

Have you got credit or is your account paid?
If those aren't the problem you'll need to log a fault with your municipality
If a residential building has a generator why do units get deducted? Ive been testing this pre paid meter Hexing* single phase. As long as electricity flows units get deducted. This is wrong. How can this be corrected?
It sounds like the generator is connected incorrectly. They need to install the generator after the meter with a proper changeover switch on the main distribution board.
This type of switch should be a "break before make" switch, so power is disconnected first before applying the generator power.
Actually, if they installed the generator before the meter they can get into trouble as the wiring up to the meter belongs to the power company and after the meter belongs to the customer.
Maybe you should get a different electrician to fix this because there are very specific requirements on how all of this is connected.
We tried putting in electricity and it said failed what could be the fault?
Box is also dark has no status light
It sounds like the batteries may be flat in the CIU (box you plug in to the wall). Try new batteries.
If that doesn't work you need to log a fault with the power company (may be Eskom or City Power)
