  • My extensive review of the mythical Meyer Gorlitz Trioplan 50mm 2.9. Ive had this lens almost 2 yrs and resisted reviewing it because I just didnt know where to begin, theres so much to talk about, from its bubble bokeh, to Meyer Optiks history to the lenses quirks and limitations. it is a lens that takes skill and knowledge to get the most out of. The Meyer Optik company name has since been revived and new lenses are being made again in Germany. One thing I want people to understand is this lens is capable of beautiful photographs as you will see in my review and in my Flickr album.

    Nice review as always! You make quality videos! Couple pointers from the mentioned:
    1. I have a Trioplan 50mm 2.9 (red V) version in Altix mount, and this red V lens has buttery smooth stepless aperture and focus rings, absolute joy to use and wonderful for video aswell. Focus throw is long though, almost 270 degrees.
    2. Altix mount (breech lock type in Altix V) is indeed a peculiar mount, rarity among many other mounts. Luckily the flange distance matches nicely with M42 / PK (Pentax). If one dares and is up for some very basic DIY, it's rather easy to use a small file for grinding the 3 lens mount blades to match M42 threads (for example). Work your way through step by step, testing periodically how / when it mounts. There's a good chance you'll eventually get a very tight fit to the adapter, by forcefully turning it along the threads, or sort of pushing it in. Focuses nicely to infinity.
    3. Lens caps are difficult to come by. 34mm generic cap is close enough, but no way perfect. With the bit of grinding the cap will fit aswell. It's not pretty, but it works.
    Since it's soon Christmas and the lights are up, it's time put the lens to proper use, for normal usage and Bokeh hunting.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  6 лет назад +1

      Ville Mononen I really appreciate you checking out the video and given that technical advice, I actually thought about filing the three parts of the m42 adapter to make it fit but I only have one focal reducer and I didn't want to mess with it that way . Believe me I tried other DIY ways to make it fit. I didn't know there was a trioplan with a stepless aperture I learned something. I've had people tell me they bought the new version but they like the older version better and it actually seemed to sharper in the center. I believe them because when I get Focus spot on you could see individual strands of hair.. what I really wanted to do was find vintage photos with this lens from the fifties to include in my review and it is extremely difficult to find those I couldn't find any. I also think would modern cameras and editing we're able to get so much more out of these lenses that we couldn't get before when using film. As a matter of fact I wonder if soap bubbles was a thing back then for them. Since you're a guru I'm going to have to come up with a challenge for you but give me time I have to make it nice and difficult lol . Peace

      Ville Mononen What is the difference between the one with the red V and the one without ?

    • @villemononen5303
      @villemononen5303 6 лет назад +1

      Gustavo Ibarra: It's difficult for me to say and find information about it. Some say that the (red) V stands for Vergütet in German, in this case meaning added level of Coating. Becoming multi-coated in some sense. Red V does stand out as some special mention, and very easily could be related to some "special" coating like in other lenses, such as Canon S.C.C., Fujinon EBC etc. But of course that's no indication of similar high quality as the two forementioned (different era, different coating standards). Then again, if that's true, i still doubt it makes much difference, if at all in normal use. The lens design is already very basic 3 elements in 3 groups, in Cooke Triplet fashion. As far as i know, there hasn't been special hunt for some particular Trioplan 50mm versions (besides mount types, M42 being most desirable), so i'm sure you'll get the Trioplan experience all the same. But it does require dedication and certain circumstances to truly shine. Trioplan 100mm seems to be the King of bubbles, but it's expensive nowadays.
      Another point of view is that Altix V (released mid 50's) was the first Altix camera to have Interchangeable lenses. This lens came from those early cameras (probably Altix V), so perhaps the V on the lens could simply relate to that camera model. That's it's sort of their first celebration model, the first interchangeable. Distinguishing the new in relation to their previous fixed models. I'm truly guessing here. I suppose the biggest change i can see of now, is that that my Red V (early model) has stepless apertures, where as Ray's later model has hard stops. Considering the simple design of the lens, i'd like to think de-clicking wouldn't be so difficult (if possible), if that's what really you want.
      All the same, get whatever Trioplan you can (that seems in good condition), and you're good to go. Some articles:
      - About Altix cameras -> camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Altix
      - About Altix cameras #2 -> www.cjs-classic-cameras.co.uk/altix/altix2.html
      - About the Triangle shaped Quality mark -> translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fde.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FGütezeichen_(DDR)&edit-text=&act=url
      My Altix V Alissa camera has the uality mark of "1 inside triangle" (Grade 1). My Red V lens has an "empty triangle", meaning it's before the time (early 50's) when they started numerating them, as far as i understand. Alright then, happy hunting and happy shooting! The hunt for the swirly and bubbly bokeh has begun.

      Ville Mononen Ville, you know your stuff, wouldn't hurt for you to do a vintage lens review also I would love to see your take on it. I appreciate that knowledgeable contribution of trio technology, that's what I needed when I was researching to produce this review. To tell you the truth the mire lens I really would like is the Primoplan. Its wider aperture and more modern design has a beautiful rendering. I'm sure you've seen many examples but yes it's expensive not as much as the 100mm trial but it's getting up there. When I read reviews of the new models I almost get the impression that they're not necessarily better lenses, they have shorter minimum focusing distances and apparently more modern coatings but it seems people still love the old models as well.

      @@Raychristofer Thanks very much Ray and at $180 I may actually pull the trigger on this one. But must admit, I was eagerly started to save and looking into net SE , the company behind the so called Reincarnation of Mayer Optik lenses, who announcement that they are going to re manufacture one of the nicest secrete lenses ever made by Meyer, that is their PRIMOPLAN 75MM F1.9 which was produced some 80-90 years back, only in a very small number, just to be the victim of World War II and disappear for ever. Unfortunately I am learning that the German plan failed and it will never be produced :( Anyways seems for now, looking at something old at ebay and keeping the fingers crossed to get a good copy of the item, first, then in good working condition, without much internal imperfection, fungi, dust, scratch, lens separation... is gonna be the only option.
      Again thanks to your kind reply and care, beside the great effort in making this video. I admire your passion for the mysterious lenses of the past that are put into great life again. Keep on what you are doing (At best) and you have another subscriber / follower here. Thanks my friend.

    Great review! Note that you can easily de-click this lens. From my Altix version: Unscrew the black front part, pull out the aperture ring (carefull to catch the ball bearing & spring) and put the aperture ring and front part back. To easily re-click the lens you'd better remove the entire lens group by removing the outer ring on the back. Easier access. Very simple lens to disassemble.

My only regret is using it on a micro four-thirds camera because it's so crap game even with a focal reducer. Great review - thanks for sharing - there are very few guys checking out this glass - I'd love to get one at some stage. The Helios 40 has also been re-manufactured, with an EOS mount. When it comes to the old Zeiss's, the lack of a circular aperture at smaller f-stops is sometimes quoted as being deliberate to introduce texture into the bokeh. I'm not sure whether this is actually true, but it's often said that the 'funkiness' of the AE Zeiss/Contax OOF areas is due to the ninja star aperture blades (the later MM's never had the ninja star).

    Raychristofer at 5:49: there is a big difference between fully manual and automatic diaphragm in terms of engineering constraints. A manually-operated iris diaphragm can have many blades, each blade is held at both ends. But an automatically-actuated iris diaphragm needs to have as little friction and inertia as possible as each blade is held at the same end, so it would be difficult, if at all possible, to increase the number of blades, while making the iris to snap down to its setting instantaneously.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  6 лет назад

      Seele2015au thanks for that Tech tip, that's actually something I never thought of. I guess that's why I even having oil on the blades is a problem for that type of mechanism.

    • @Seele2015au
      @Seele2015au 6 лет назад +2

      Raychristofer Indeed; many less-experienced types think that oil on iris blades is invariably bad, but it makes no difference if the iris diaphragm is manually operated.

      I really think you nailed the substance/style balance. The pacing and mood and obvious thought and care you put into the production are so much better than many of the sterile reviews one typically sees on youtube. Why not do multiple reviews? For example the normal one you've done, a techy/how-to one on the review topic, and an even more meta techy one about how you made the video itself. What I've seen on youtube lately is that reviewers will break reviews up into multiple segments which contain a great deal of overlap/redundant footage. I think they do this so when a search is done on youtube they get multiple videos appearing in the results instead of just one and they can also squeeze every-bit out of there footage and increase the frequency of uploads which youtube encourages. Looking forward to the next one! :) Mitch

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  6 лет назад

      Mitchell Hagerty yes Mitch you know what it is, sometimes I click on a lens review and all it is is someone sitting at a desk for 15 minutes talking and never taking it outside, I want to pull my hair out literally LOL. My dad says if you're going to take time to do something why not do it your best. That's an interesting idea of breaking it up, I do have extra footage but it's not cohesive enough to Cobble into another review. I think a good lens for me to do another follow up review on is the Helios though. I will keep those things in mind the next time I shoot a review. Thanks for the input. By the way I have a Carl Zeiss and a voigtlander that I should review in the future. Peace

      Maybe it's worth mentioning that the standard Pentacon 50mm f1.8 lens that came with most Praktica cameras is a bubble blowing monster as well. Got an adapter m42 to eos EF and used the Pentacon from my dad's MTL-3. It is fantastic, the bokeh is mind blowing, when used right it is full of soapbubbles.
      I would go as far as saying that these lenses should be used with caution, overdoing it can lead to severe nausea from a wild picture full of bubbles and swirls, doping for the eyes. Still, i would love to get my hands on a vintage Trioplan, they're beautyful.

    Great review. I've been looking at these lenses for some time and wondering how much post process was involved in some of the shots I have seen on flickr. From your video it looks like straight out of the camera the images are great. Did you apply any corrections to the whole video or are those colours just what it looks like? If so, I'm sold. I love those warm rick colours and having the bokeh there if you want it, in an otherwise great lens, makes me think one of these is worth the $$ they are asking on eBay these days. I really appreciate the tips on shooting and your general style. Nicely done.

      Richard Powell hello Richard, I appreciate the comment. This is my most extensive review, probably took me over two months to put together. As far as processing no I didn't mess with the colors when editing I may have added some Vibrance. And when shooting wide open that's when you need to add a little sharpening, local contrast and whatever else the image needs to get the end result you're looking for. I encourage you to check out the full resolution images in my Flickr link. It's amazing how crisp and sharp this 3 element lens is in the center when stopped down to F4. I read in some forums that the new model in is not necessarily Superior in image quality to a good old one. What camera will you be using it on?

      Thanks Ray, I was just looking at your photos on flickr. I really do like the colour coming through that lens of yours. I ordered an Oreston back in December (currently lost in transit somewhere), and from what I've been able to gather the Trioplan has a bit more sharpness, so I've just bid on one on ebay. Will be interesting to compare the two if I get them both. The new model you mentioned looks like it may do justice to the original, but somehow I like the idea of having a vintage one. I also like your suggestion to use these lenses for more than just the artistic Bokeh application. You have done a real service in showing the lens in video mode, really gives a sense of how it works "live."

    • @Raychristofer

      Richard Powell yeah man as mythical as this lens is supposed to be it makes you wonder why there are so few reviews it's usually hard to get a video to rankon RUclips because there are so many other ones to compete with so hopefully this particular video can stand out and maybe come on the first page. I love reviewing lenses because there's so much to talk about especially these older ones. I challenge you to review yours when you get it LOL no pressure bro

      Ha ha, yeah, I've thought about getting more serious with my video work. I find it very time consuming but my son is starting in on it too and is using some new software he says makes it much easier. We shall see. It is really interesting how sometimes there is lots of fluff, but not a lot of depth in reviews and the associated discussions of lenses. I've been seeing a number of people express dissatisfaction with the "technical" precision of modern lenses at the expense of warmth and character. I love my 17mm Olympus and marvel at the sharpness and range of use. The bokeh is actually quite nice. But my favorite lens at the moment is my old Oly OM F. Zuiko 50mm from the late 70s from the first serious camera I owned!! I love celebrating these old beauties. I hope you do more reviews like this Ray. I'll be watching. :-)

    Very good and informative presentation. Do you have any experience with or thoughts about using that lens on a full frame body? I would guess that an M42 lens should not be a problem with a full frame as long as you have an adapter.

    • @Raychristofer

      brant morrison hello I appreciate it. I wish more people knew about this lens but then again maybe that would drive the prices up. Of course it was made for full frame I use it with an adapter on my film camera all you need is a whatever camera you have to m42 type adapter. The problem is you're going to catch hell trying to find this in m42 Mount and it will be expensive. See if you can find what you have to altx Mount those lenses are about $150

    • @brantmorrison3704

      Thanks for your reply. The original Trioplan lenses might be a just a bit too dear on ebay to consider at this time. Perhaps one of the many Russian M42 models might satisfy my curiosity about the round bubble bokeh. Luckily, I have a couple FD and FL lenses and an unused Jupiter or two which will keep me busy when I am not looking through some likely shops.

    I have that lens . Use it on my Fuji x pro 2 . Other soap-bokeh one is the Meyer Gorlitz Oreston 50mm F1.8 . The trioplan is very small and weight is about 80gram, has 12 blades and obvious only 3 lenses . I find it more difficult to focus because it is so small and the focusing ring is not that smooth ( could be my copy ) . The Oreston is bigger , weighs about 215 grams, has only 6 blades and 6 elements in 4 groups , is faster at F1.8 and easier to focus. I tend to use the Oreston more often. Never compared both optical, will do one day.

      Anandan Baskaran Hello thank you. I actually spoke about the dilemma of adaptors in the video. The best thing for you to do is look at all lenses available and write down the mounts they come in. Then look for adaptors for your Sony in that mount. Most gorlitz lenses will be altix mount. Ideally you want to use a focal reducer to get the most of the lens character. Hope that helps.

      Anandan Baskaran hey you won't regret it, it's mandatory to use that. Much of the character in these lenses is in the outer part of the frame that would have been cropped out. I'm glad my video was of help. When you get the reducer let me know your experience with it.

    The Mitakon Lensturbo , and try also with the metabones speedbooster with a M42 - Nikon adapter. It will allow me to use the speedbooster but probably I won’t be able to infinity focus. But the lenses be like a 37 mm 1.8.

    I must be weird, because I love the octagon shape of the Zeiss, as well as the swirling effects of Helios, and the bubbly effect of this lens. I don't want to shoot with a vintage lens to render what I get from a modern lens. I shoot with legacy and vintage lenses because of their so called imperfections.

    Automatic lenses needed to stop down quickly so fewer aperture blades made that easier. Hexagonal bokeh is not usually a problem. You can’t apply the same methodology for bokeh bubbles to the pancolar. They are very different designs.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  5 лет назад +1

      That's the very reason I own both of them they both have their own characteristics.

    • @christopherward5065

      The lens is a Cooke Triplet, 3 element design. The effect is probably diffraction from the iris caused by limitations in where the iris could be placed and the refractive indices of each element. The cool thing is the richness of colour and the micro contrast once you just use it normally. Tessars and Planars were able to beat the bright edged patches by being better designs. Your Pancolar is a planar type.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  5 лет назад +1

      @@christopherward5065 The sad thing is a month after filming this the Zeiss rolled off my bed and dented the focus ring badly and is inoperable.
