PertSnergleman's Review:
-------------------------------------------
It is a most unfortunate incident.
The most unfortunate.
The Hamburg Incident
In the European Spring
of April 1993, the reigning
WTA World #1 was injured
in a shameless on-court attack.
Audaciously visible to the
4000+ spectators,
the unrestrained assault
is to this day, one of the most
heinous, villainous and
reprehensible precedents
in modern sport...
This video - the FULL VERSION
of the televised tennis match -
take note and remember
the consequences...
a 19 year old young woman,
the future was changed
irrevocably in an instant.

I wasn't a tennis fan back then and I really appreciate these videos . They have given me so much respect for the players who evolved and made the game evolve with them .
I've learned a lot about people just falling their stories .
I think what most people don't realise is that Monica was only 19 years old. A teenager. She had dominated for a few years and would have been unstoppable. This was a very sad time for all tennis fans and changed the course of history. Graf's greatness will always be questioned to a mad man!
How can anyone attack someone so nice . Everyone who spoke with her said she was so friendly . The German Government gave her attacker 2 years probation . No jail time.
They practically accepted his actions in order to protect Graf's future wins. Her attacker even tried to continue stabbing her but fans took him down.
She could never play without being scared to death . She became a binge eater because of her anxiety and trauma and gain weight and lost her speed . She should have gone on to win grand slams and break records but she almost lost all will to play .
The $Million that Steffi Graf went on to win was probably destined for Seles but stolen from her by a sick fan with a knife and a corrupt German justice system.
I think she was the most incredible tennis player and is one of the nicest stars to play the game .❤
why the picture is freezing in the inportant moment?
Thank you Pert Snergleman !
I've just started reading Monica Seles book and came here for reference. Gunther Parche got what he wanted. A deranged Graf fan; he looked to injure Seles so that Graf could return to No.1 and dominate the sport. Parche never served prison time for his actions. The rest, is written by the victors.
Despite Graf becoming a great champion: we'll never know what could've been. At an already young 19yrs old; Seles was dominating everyone on court. The genesis of the 'power tennis' game imho. I feel that her contribution is forgotten too easily and her tragedy has instead become her story...
And stating this simple facts on social media will get you a ton of hate from people who are more busy defending Graf’s asterisk than blaming a psycho for stabbing an innocent young woman.
Most people don't know this but Ryan Stiles made his television debut that day. You can see him enter the screen around 1:05:41. Producers at Channel 4 noticed his ability to act fast and improvise in a completely bizarre, unique situation, and decided to fly him to the UK, where they promptly added him to the Whose Line Is It Anyway lineup. He had no idea that this moment would change the course of his life!
That's actually hilarious
Günter Parche, the man who stabbed Monica Seles in Hamburg 30 years ago and was a Steffi Graf fan, died last year in Nordhausen. He was 68 years old.
Good riddance. The man destroyed the best tennis career ever and didn’t even spend a day in jail.
@@jujumusique1305 not the best, that's not true
@@schmatzesah name someone else who won 8 out of the first 14 slams they played, 3 out of the first 4 YEC they played, all of this before turning 19. I’ll wait ;)
@@jujumusique1305 a lot in their career , a lot of ladies had to fight with injuries, opponents and other circumstances and have achieved more in open era
@@schmatzesah thank you captain obvious. I know that 23 slams is more than 9 slams. My point was that by the time of the stabbing Seles had achieved more than any other player at a similar age / amount of time spent on the tour. Which is an undisputed fact.
This day will forever be ingrained in the heads of true tennis fans. Monica Seles was clearly the dominant player of the period and her trajectory was derailed by a mad man. A lot of people resort to "Steffi Graf was helped by the misfortune and amassed her grand slams because of this" not fully understanding the circumstances. Steffi was tenacious and well on her way to figuring out the Seles game but even then Seles had her "plan b" and would have fended off challenges to her throne. The truth of the matter is that the sport missed a fierce rivalry and a period also defined by magnificent players like Gabriela Sabatini, Arantxa Sanchez and Conchita Martinez.
Days like this are why discussions about "the greatest of all time" are futile and a complete waste of time.
I am at a loss for words by the INEFFICIENCY and MEDDLING of the tournament staff! Over 5 minutes to get medics and prior to that Seles is surrounded by a bunch of tournament workers who are just watching the spectacle but doing absolutely nothing but creating more chaos!!
Don't talk rubbish pal
"The future was changed IRREVOCABLY in an instant". Indeed!
Seles would play every point like it was part of her training . She wouldn't avoid situations but would try to repeat them until she could over come them .
It's what made her the best ... it was her mental strength and will power ...
How your life can change from one moment to the next. Great support to Monica.❤
I'm watching this but I know it will haunt me !
Maleeva was crushed watching as Monica was being attended to.
Why is the stabbing moment not shown? Looks like the tv was expecting that moment to censor it
Commercial
It happened at changeover which is typically when European channels were showing commercials.
After her stabbing , the players voted against Monica Seles to retain her #1 place in her absence .
Horrible to watch that.
one man forever changed the course of tennis history.
Horrible to watch what ? You see nothing
Can you believe that as of today this match still counts as a LOSS in Seles’ official stats. Absolute shame on WTA for this.
Not one person seemed to come near Maleeva and she was distraught and terrified
Oof. I can't watch this one. Too sad.
El fanatismo no tiene límites, nunca pensé que cambiaría el destino de Seles, un enfermo solamente lastima a un jugador para favorecer a su preferida
MISS 30 SLAM....
Poor Monica was out numbered by opponent's fans . Graf , Caprioti and Sobotini all had huge fan bases and cheered their player. They also got most of the endorsements .
Monica didn't seek attention and got little.
This was the last match of the little girl who outplayed everyone !
She would never be back as herself !
Sad for Monica, what happened to her?
And even more unfortunate that he did for Steffi Graf. Graf doesn't need it & this man throw her in the dark.
graf doesn't need it, but without this stabbing graf would not have won 22 grand slams, and that is fact, because the 11 grand slams that graf won after the sabbing would be shared with seles, and that is a realistic projection.
@@minavamp2811 there is no guaranteed that Seles would have won all the slam.
Remember do you ever thought that McEnroe would stopped winning grand after such a dominance 1984 season?
Do you ever thought Mats Wilander gonna stopped winning slams after dominant 1988 season ?
Do you ever thought Hingis gonna stopped winning slam after 1999 Australian open?
So there is no guarantee that Seles would carry out same form year after year.
May be Seles would had been meet with a car accident. Who knows?
Meanwhile during Seles peak from 1991-1993 it's Graf who lead 3-2 h2h.
A player who had only beaten other just 5 times is not a big deal.
Meanwhile a peak Henin (2003-2007) owned Serena 5-2 h2h.
@@rajusaha855 i didn't say that seles would win all 11 slams that graf won after the stabbing. definitely seles would split with graf the 11 slams that graf won after the stabbing. the bottom line is without the stabbing graf grand slam wins would not have reached 22 slams.
@@minavamp2811 may be Graf wouldn't retired too soon at the age of 30 then.
Look at big 3 they are still playing at 35 because of the motivation. Otherwise player like Federer would retired long time ago.
May be Seles was bit too lucky when Graf was distracted ( remember her father extra marital affair, tax evasion) she started to win grand slam.
Could a peak & healthy Graf lost that 1990 Berlin & then French open final to Seles?
No way she was mentally distracted.
Player like Sabatini beat her 7 times in that period.
Meanwhile in Germany Graf was far bigger star than Seles ever was in Yugoslavia. Even Serena or Evert never had that kind of popularity in their home country.
The pressure from media was huge for Graf to handle than Seles.
Put Seles in the same situation as Graf. I bet you Seles would have suffer the same fate.
@@rajusaha855You nailed it 👏 no sentimental dreaming just logical arguments 👍
Tragically, Monica's stabbing was the culmination of a very worrying culture that haunted a lot of female tennis players - obsessive and often mentally unbalanced male "fans". Other players have seen some of that. Martina Hingis had problems with a man stalking her. Steffi herself had stalkers, and one man slashed his wrists in front of her. Sadly, we often see the soft end of that in the RUclips comments. A lot of men who've developed an unhealthy obsession with a player - usually Monica or Steffi, talking like they knew them, over identifying with them, and projecting their own fantasies onto them.
Same goes for alot of obsessive women so keep your man hate speeches for your christmas dinners so u can bitch about it there
Did the man who stabbed Monica Seles in the back with a kitchen knife end up going to jail for a villainous act like this in 1993?
No...
He didn't, but he's dead now 🤷♀️
Very bad idea to post. No normal, decent person would want to watch this. I will not watch, and any person in their right mind should not either.
Then why would you press on it. If you don't want to watch it then don't. No one cares
You don’t even see the stabbing….
Even if they showed the stabbing, which they don't, I've seen worse on social media
Guy just wanna shine as a holy preacher
