    Smart move. No doubt the talent is there. But if he can't stay on the field and reach his potential it's time to move on. If he does break out, they just franchise tag him for about $2 mil more than the 5th year option. Haven't been a fan of Mayhew as a GM, but this was the right thing to do.

    As a Commanders fan I'm terrified of Young. We finally sucked enough to get the 2nd OVR pick and a generational prospect and of course he's the rare "sure-fire" guy that has looked anything but. The injury is one thing, but he just can't rush the passer like he should. He's an elite presence on the field and sideline during games and his run defense is exceptionally sound; but the guy doesn't do the one thing that gets you drafted 2nd OVR nearly good enough. I hope he finally adds some new moves to his pass rushing kit and adjusts in game better. I'm scared he's gonna end up like Jadeveon Clowney. Good DE you want on your team, but not at all taken 2nd OVR.

      Good point actually. Commanders play zone coverage and *need* their front 4 to win consistently on pass downs. Very reflective of their interior pass rush talents as well. No use paying a edge rusher big money that can't pressure in that kinda system.

    Chase and sweat plays to high im just an arm chair coach but I can tell that they suppose to shrink their striking zone they let OL get into their chest way too easy he lacks a good bull rush and he doesn’t have good agility along with bend he needs to understand the leverage he got lucky there was no combine that year cause it would’ve shown he’s not the athlete they advertised in ou

    I think it is also about his commitment and drive. To be honest, I think it is to the coaching staff's advantage to have Chase Young on a prove-it year, because they want the best out of him for their own sake. They really need a winning season this year to sell the new owner on them.

    Honestly, he's so good agaisnt the run, and the Commanders struggled against the run enough at times last season, that he's probably goign to pay dividends this season just based on that (if he stays healthy). This isn't just running backs, but mobile quarterbacks like Daniel Jones and Jalen Hurts that the Commanders face twice a season. Sweat is pretty bad at containing mobile quarterbacks, where Young has been considerably better. Once Young gets healthy enough to make some of his side steps and other moves that he couldn't at the end of last season, he'll probably also contribute towards the pass rush nicely.

    • @2up2down00

      He wasn’t drafted at #2 to be a run stopper at DE in a passing league .. he’s borderline bust right now and unless he has a dominant all pro contract year , Chase is a bust imo

    • @TurtletheShell
      @TurtletheShell Год назад

      @@2up2down00 Yeah I'm not saying he's not a bust for his draft position or anything like that. I just think they struggled at times against mobile QBs and against top tier running games, and Chase should be a marked improvement on those holes. Also, as I said I think he will be able to put pressure on the QB, especially the more he heals up and feels comfortable using spin moves and side steps, and even if he doesn't get sacks, if he gets enough pressure and contains the QB well, they'll try to escape him into the waiting arms of the rest of the d line. Theoretically speaking. But yeah, you'd hope a #2 overall pick would be getting to the QB and generating tons of pressure himself / forcing double teams, so by that metric he's currently a bust. I don't think he has to play like a top tier player though for this d line to feast more than ever this year though. But, we'll just have to wait and see.

    It's a bit misleading to say he "can't stay on the field". That term is usually used to describe a player who has frequent or successive small injuries of various kinds to various body parts. Chase had one major injury, to his ACL and other elements of that knee joint. His recovery was slow of necessity based on the severity of the injury. Also, it would not be surprising if he was a little guarded at the end of last season when he finally did get to play for the first time after the ACL. At times he seemed to be a little tentative. The question is whether he is really fully recovered or whether there is some permanent damage that will always affect his play. For that reason, I think, the Commanders may have preferred to see what happens on the field this year. Or perhaps the Commanders have some inside information that is not favorable for the long term prognosis.
