I went to the one in Chicago. My parents took me to the event. I passed the qualifying round and my parents wouldn't take me back on Sunday for the quarterfinals cause it was about an hour drive. Oh, memories. Those were the days. Come to think of it, this event was just a big marketing campaign for the Gameboy and that silly movie with Fred Savage called The Wizard, which itself was a huge commercial for Super Mario Bros 3. HAHAHA Now I'm old enough to see it from that perspective.
This is radical! I hope the Nintendo World Championships 2015 will be able to catch the same groove as the original. Will there be age tiers like in the 90's??
I remember Thor Aackerlund promoting a game on QVC back in 1990. I think it was Big Nose The Caveman. He actually was playing and making it look pretty easy. Good memories
@TheEgg185 Actually, they did something sort of like this recently for the Wii; it was called the "Wii Summer Games 2010". The selection of games wasn't as good, though. While there were challenges for New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart, they also had challenges for Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit. It also wasn't an invite-only event like the World Championships; anyone could participate from the get-go.
Ummm, after this competition, Thor Aackerlund ended up beating the other two divsion finalists in an informal match, and traveled to Japan and beat the Japanese National Champion to eventually become World Champion.
@MisterShow1986 if Nintendo ran the competition and called it the world championships, then it was the world championships. if anyone from latin america or japan felt that strongly about it, there were no nationality restrictions at the door... they couldve hopped on a plane and made the trip.
This was so fun! I was there when I was 9 years old. I've got some old memorabilia from it that I'm getting ready to put on E-Bay.. With the retro craze I'm thinking there may be an interest in this stuff. I have a T-Shirt, Hat, old ticket stubs, copies of the actual Nintendo World Championships we played plus a give away one. They are kinda weird carts, not sure if anyone would really want them. I have a grey one that was actually used when we competed and a Gold one that was a give away. (They are basically the same game best I remember) They have this weird switch like thing on them.. Kinda cool I guess. I also have some of the paper work from being invited to it. Pictures that were taken there and a trophy. Looking to sale all of it for $50.00 bucks if anyone is interested. (I'm willing to negotiate) My Dad flipped out on me when he found out I kept the cart I played on there. I just kinda took it haha! I'll put a link up once I get it on E-Bay. Also have a bunch of old NES stuff..
@MisterShow1986 Nintendo themselves ran the event. If they deemed it the World Championship, then it was the World Championship. If anybody from Japan, S America or Europe had an issue, they couldve flown in and participated.
It's funny because back in the day, it had actually effort put into them, now we're getting ecelebs playing the latest casual products just to market them towards us (the audience), can't wait to see what competitive edge Sm4sh, Splatoon and Pokemon ORAS have over Tetris lol.

Sadly, Thor Aackerlund became a chronic masterbaitor after the championship. He later died of a staph infection from a rest stop glory hole. America lost a great champion that day. RIP Thor.
Little do you know, I do run a business. A medical transcription business. So I do know how companies should work, and Nintendo had it right in the beginning, but now they just care for casual gamers instead of the hardcore ones. If they were smart they would balance it out between casual and hardcore so they don't lose their fanbase which WAS most of their income.
