For real, I personally don't know what it's like to be in such danger but my father did. I faintly remember him telling me that he owned a shop back in the 80s and had a drug dealer as a returning customer, they even both got familiar with each other and were friends, and he would give my father a lot of money for simple errands and even show him around his mansion. He even offered my father $60,000 to get on a boat and load drugs dropped from a plane onto the sea, but he refused seeing as it's so risky. So one day, the drug dealer made a deal with some Colombian cartel (?) that he would take the plane and transport the drugs for him, but the drug dealer was actually stealing the drugs for himself - the Colombian cartel found out. A few weeks later, drug dealer dude asked my father to come with him to go get his luxury car's windows tinted, but my father broke his leg and couldn't go, so he went alone. Turns out the Colombian cartel knew he would be at the shop to get work done on his car so they killed him and gave him a Colombian necktie, my father was beyond scared when he found out and incredibly lucky.
I lived in Peru for 5 years, mostly in Cusco. If you are in Coca, you have a Toyota Hi-Lux pick up truck. If you are an illegal gold miner....the same. (Hi Lux) If you are a taxi driver, you have a Toyota Yaris. If you want to chew Coca leaves, for the best effect, chew dry leaves and add the catalyst (lejia) which is a dark brownish blackish piece of tar like substance that helps extract the stimulant from the leaf. Those that sell the bags usually will have it included or know about it. Guys, I spent time mostly in Cusco, and did know a few guys who probably would not appreciate you driving thru that area, and taking pics etc.. There are probably others who did the same and disappeared afterwards? Just be more aware. You are gringo's and, like me, stick out like a sore thumb. That Coca is their income. Even the local police are more respectful. Good luck with your journey.

Nice comment but the vibe I'm getting of Stephen is anything but cool, if anything he gives off the grumpy old man vibe and brings down the spirit rather than lifting it. Buying and putting on that Goku hat was a master move of not giving a damn / mental freedom. Do you think Stephen would ever do that? No way man, instead he ridicules the free spirit of Kurt. Plus he's got that angry forward leaning posture all the time. He's not a free man but rather trapped in his own fear/shame. Like way too many people sadly are. Just calling it like I see it. Stephen's average. Kurt is a treasure.
lol, coca leaves don't have that strong effect. they have a minimal mental buzz, locals chew or drink them in tea them to fight the altitude sickness. on the other hand cocaine, has many more chemicals and processes done to the leaves which in effect gives you that high.

Fun fact: the Incan civilisation had abundant gold mines in the mountains and the miners constantly used to chew cocoa leaves to have a raised heartbeat so they could survive in these such high altitude mountains
Coca is and was used primarily as an energy boost and to suppress hunger, it also helps with altitude sickness but local Peruvian highlanders (I mean those that live at median highland altitudes) don't consume it for that. However many Peruvians live at much lower terrain such as the Amazon or the coast (the latter being the most populated part of Peru). However highlanders, acclimatized since birth don't typically consume coca for acclimatization (duh), unless we're talking of people living at about 3000 masl moving to places 5000 masl like moving to La Rinconada aka the highest city and settlement of any kind in the world, some highland 3000 masl people moving there might use coca for acclimatization but I'm not sure
Additionally, places like the video, mountainous but very greenish looking are in a thin strip called the eastern yungas where the Andes collides with the Amazon, the average altitude there is pitiful, like 1500 masl (4921.26 feet), the highest places there are at like 2500 masl (such as Machu Picchu), and lack or oxygen or altitude sickness are basically nonexistent at the Yungas, the area is however excellent for growing coca leaves, and since ancient times is the main hub from where everyone else gets their leaves including people in the inner mode traditional chilly Andes landscape (living at much higher altitudes than the video). Btw the average altitude peruvian highlanders live in is 3000-3500 masl, Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire is at 3,399 masl for example, while Peruvians in general live at an average of 1500 masl because coastal people who live near sea level lowers it down
@@farkmuckerzerg634 the coca was used to help speed up the pump of blood of blood around the body and as not all the oxygen is used when pumped around the body once it creates higher efficiency of oxygen so it's not counterintuitive
You never know what you're going to run into on the mountain roads - they're not in very good condition. Then, the clouds clear and you arrive in quite a nice town with friendly people. I find these videos fascinating.
I’m from Perú and I never been there and will never do that. Yeah, most peruvians we don’t chew coca leaves some barely buy the coca infusion tea the sale 😂, you’re right not even the 1% of the population consume coca leaves, perhaps the people who works at the lands pick up, I know the fishers they chew leaves to be awake all night working.
there's an error with the number. According to the INEI, in 2013, about 10% of the population bought coca leaves at least once, of those, almost 70% are residents of the Andean region, and 15% of Lima and Callao. To date, if the new authorities are nota willing to change, the trend will probably continue.
Wrong! There is a high percentage of the Serranos who chew coca, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing so. When I go into the altitudes, I constantly chew, as do most of the people around whom I live. The effect is nothing like people imagine; I chew the coca negra, and the effect is just a pleasant uplifting, When I return to the coast, I simply stop chewing, with no after effect whatsoever.

If you are a taxi driver, you have a Toyota Yaris.

Nice comment but the vibe I'm getting of Stephen is anything but cool, if anything he gives off the grumpy old man vibe and brings down the spirit rather than lifting it. Buying and putting on that Goku hat was a master move of not giving a damn / mental freedom. Do you think Stephen would ever do that? No way man, instead he ridicules the free spirit of Kurt. Asking to be stuck or swept away and drown in the car as the electric windows probably won't open due to shorted wiring, and doors won't open due to water pressure.
@@rainscratch How would they drown in the car if the doors won’t open due to water pressure
@@romanj5256 Cars aren't boats they are not water tight. Water will get into the passenger compartment from many openings. If you are in this situation the only way out is to try to break the side window, unless it is an old car with manual window winders.

That goes for Stefan aswell both guys just seem so genuine
Fun fact: the Incan civilisation had abundant gold mines in the mountains and the miners constantly used to chew cocoa leaves to have a raised heartbeat so they could survive in these such high altitude mountains
That seems a little counterintuitive as you would require more oxygen if your heart was beating faster
@@mera6555 so If I go to Cusco as a tourist will I have any problems?
“This is really fishy territory we’re coming into right now” has a witty meaning in the context of cocaine 😂
You never know what you're going to run into on the mountain roads - they're not in very good condition. Then, the clouds clear and you arrive in quite a nice town with friendly people. I find these videos fascinating.
This was a good one, loved the ending with the football. Thanks for sharing your adventures. All the best from Sweden! 🇸🇪✌
Maybe in Lima but I think it´s a lot more in the rest of the country.
Most delightful video! You guys are funny and amazing. I was so glad to see you get off of those dangerous, raggedy roads.

@@kaizen5023 Yes, that reason is of political nature. There are many older professions. Examples of that are hunter, gatherer and toolmaker.
@@Tiffabean I am not for banning prostitution. I believe in individual freedom more than anything. Government, morality police and people should have no say in what adult individuals do with their own body. Problem is when prositutes are not individuals, but being exploited by others. Human trafficking and slavery. This reality also becomes normal for the victims eventually, which is unfortunate and sad. But that does not mean we should accept it as a society. Unfortunately there are some societies that do. Best way to combat prostitution is ending poverty, and giving opportunity. Give a better choice, but it will be just that, a choice. There will always be "escorts" that will choose this profession, after all it can be extremely lucrative in the high end side of it. And i see nothing wrong with that.
