À Douaumont près de Verdun, hommage aux morts de la guerre de 1914-1918, rendu conjointement par François MITTERRAND et Helmut KOHL. Après avoir écouté l'hymne allemand, François MITTERRAND et Helmut KOHL se tiennent la main pendant que l'orchestre militaire joue "La Marseillaise".

This is probably the image... (his voice breaks with emotion again)... The most poignant of this ceremony: President Mitterand and Chancellor Kohl shaking hands during "the Marseillaise" after the "Deutschland uber alles" (past German anthem) resounded on these historic sites.
I believe this is the first time the German anthem has been played in Verdun.
A handshake, 25 years after the agreements concluded between General de Gaulle and Mr. Konrad Adenauer which sealed the Franco-German reconciliation."
