Many of the problems with this movie can be summed up like so... Focus-groups: A criminal mastermind at twelve? NO! We can't let a child be a sociopathic bad guy! Disney: Okay, fine. We won't do that. Meanwhile, in Gravity Falls: Lil Gideon: Am I a joke to you? I'm clearly not, because I was only unseated as a major villain in my show by an ACTUAL F**KING DEMON! Bill Cipher: Well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, WELL! Somebody in the writing room sure dropped the ball!
Oh yeah. I remember me and a friend going to a bookshop together specifically to grab copies of book 5, back then the idea of actually see it played out was fun. Then we got this utter garbage where both the plot and the cast were changed to the point of near unrecognizability. Artemis is a very real criminal mastermind (by the time he's 12 Interpol has an active file on him), the Fowl's are a well established criminal empire; something Artemis knows and is proud of. Butler is Eurasian, bald and only tells Artemis his first name as he was DYING. Holly was the first ever woman in LEPRecon & was under immense pressure to perform as a result of that, which directly contributed to her running out of magic at a key moment. The Fairies are child size but have human proportions, etc. None of these are minor details they got wrong, these are basic elements of the story and characters. You don't have to read the whole series to know this. It feels like so many video game movies or the Earthsea miniseries; they took a much loved IP and then decided they knew better than it's creators.
Race swapping Butler was a really bad move when you remember that apparently Butler's family had been serving the Foul family for generation. Which has a different connotation when you switch from a russio asian to an african.
I'd say it's ironic Disney wouldn't allow Artemis to remain a criminal mastermind when they keep making villain movies, but then again, regardless of what one thinks of their quality, they do keep trying to make their villains seem less villainous in comparison to the antagonists in those movies.
