I am absolutely awestruck by your performance of this, Kerry. All of your ELP covers are right on the money. This one completely blew me away because, until now, no one has ever seen what is done on the keyboards in this tune, and this is our first glimpse at all of the percussive parts involved. Absolutely breathtaking work here, Kerry!
Kerry, I got into keyboards back in the early 70's because of two people. Jon Lord (Deep Purple) and Kieth Emmerson. I bought a Hammond B3 with Lestlie 122 Speaker cabinet then moved on to Roland Juno 60, then Yamaha DX7 and then Korg EX 8000 and the list went on. Then Bam. I stopped playing cuz of the Military. I am now back into my original venture Guitars. U R Awsome. I would swear U were Kieth Emmerson. Good luck...
I just can't believe my ears, this was incredible. Toccata is one of my favorites too, a true masterpiece, with a unique atmosphere, pity they didn't record more songs like it. You sure know how to set up that CX3! Congratulations, keep on rockin'!
The synth programming is so cool. I did some programming for the LFO trigger on the 3rd Impression synth part, but was not patient enough to program the crazy toccata modulations. It sounds like the trigger has notes ascending and decsending at the same time. I knew someone who said he thought it was an overdub, but then he was blown away when he saw them do it live in 1974.
Thanks again. After thirtyfivesome years of mostly indifference, or "play something pretty", comes the internet to the rescue. Love you repeat viewers.
OMG... I have been listening to ELP since I was a kid in the 70's. I play keyboards and have tried to play just one song and have never been able to master it. Kerry, other than Keith himself, I have never hear a better cover.
Wow massive talent!!! Out of all the people I see perform Emerson's work you are definitely up there at number one or top three at least... Somehow I feel you preserve the sound the best. Thanks for keeping their music alive back in 1970 when I came to them there wasn't a big fan base. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert three times including the Karn Evil 9 tour
Kerry... everytime i go on youtube... i can't stop watching all your videos...its simply awesome!!! Like the song said: Nothing's compared to you" ... really...sound, technics etc etc etc..... I'm speachless.....
wow kerry, thx for takin the time to put that together and to perform it so well. one of my fav songs that i would have never thought i'd see done pseudo live.
GREAT point,audiophile-ive always wondered what Keith did on the keyboards in this song to trigger such an amazing sound. And im not a musician, just someone who digs the sound of it.This was the second ELP song i ever heard-that screeching, spitting organ was the wildest thing i ever heard!Way different to the top 40 stuff i was listening to at the time. This was an absolute revelation.Great job on it,Kerry.
Best rendition I've ever heard. The sound as well as your playing are both very accurate! First saw ELP on the TV at "California Jam" when I was still pretty young and I've been a fan ever since... Awesome vid.. You're truly talented!
The change I noticed the most from Ginastera's version(other than crazy electronics & Carl's part & Keith & Greg's unison duet afterward) is at 2:15 on Kerry's performance. After the ascending trumpet synth(4th's on G# over an A in the bass) the last two notes on Ginestera's version are actually(and please correct me if I'm wrong) a high F# down to B (not to D# as Keith plays it) this is followed by a B diminished chord (rather than D# diminished as Keith play's) I've played it both ways.
Congrats Kerry!!!! WOW you nailed it man... with all the details in this Live version '74 WBMF. Hey gang, just go see all his video...they are amazing including my favorite..Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression. Another that would be great could be Hoedown...the live version of course :) Keep the goos work Kerry....:)
Thanks. I do all my own sequencing. I'd be curious to check out the Queensland tracks for accuracy. Even if you get all the notes and rhythms right it takes a lot of tweeking to get it to sound natural. The top keyboard is an Emu Xboard which triggers a Yamaha EX5. I got Arturia's Moog modular software a couple weeks ago. It sounds very authentic and I've already gotten most of Keith's sounds without some of the limitations of the EX5. I'll likely use it on future videos.
Mesmerizing! Well done!! I'm glad you ended before Carl's synthesized percussion came in. So many people don't know that Carl was playing that part and not Keith.
This classic piece was originally part of Ginestera's 1st piano Concerto. Perhaps this reveals that the evolution of Mankind indeed may be in and through music. Ultimate freedom at your fingertips.
The synth has to have adequate pitch envelopes with trigger delay. Two voices play the same note. After a short delay the pitch envelopes kick in and send one voice up and one voice down to specific pitches. An LFO kicks in about the same time as the pitch envelopes and adds a little jerky vibrato. I think I used a sawtooth for the LFO.
I actually have a friend who videoed himself playing the timpani solo...but I don't know if anyone will ever recreate the synthsized drum solo. I've got to pick my battles, so to speak, but someday I'd like to add the timpani and the guitar/synth duet.
Thanks! Once again, the top keyboard is an EMU Xboard triggering a Yamaha EX5 off camera. The analog modeling in the EX5 is second to none, but is still not as flexible as the real deal (Moog modular), so I have to make little compromises here and there.
I only try to perform what is on live recordings. As far as I know, all the synth sounds came from the modular except the opening horn sound, which comes from the Moog Lyra. That sound is used again for a couple other lines. The crazy stuff (live anyway) comes from the modular. Most of the effect comes from pitch envelopes and audio rate modulation. I don't hear anything that seems to come from the Polymoog.
Actually, watching Kerry play leads me to believe some of the other notes are different as well at 2:10 to 2:15.(or maybe I transcribed it incorrectly)
Three choices: Play the original (good luck), sound like ELP, or do your own arrangement. I wanted to sound like ELP so I did my best with what I had. Keith simplified things quite a bit. I suspect he wrote the guitar/synth duet. My upper keyboard served for both the Moog modular sounds and the Lyra horn sound. This made it a little easier to get around, but essentially I play everything the same way Keith did. Sure, send the PDF.
The Piano part of the original employs so many 'blocked' chords is that why Emo simplified maybe? Synth tones heavy with audio rate mod add frequencies that thicken things up?
First off I want to say awesome keyboard playing. I can't believe that I just caught this so many years later. Kerry I have a lot of Arturia synths, but have no idea how to get those awesome and exact sounds for Toccata. Could you point me in right direct to find these samples or vsts that sound like that? it Was like listening to Keith...May he rest in peace.
Hi Kerry brilliant as always...you must check out Rachel Flowers on you tube (search her) with some of her elp stuff and also her other stuff....let me know what you think
If that's all you couldn't figure out you're doing pretty well. I have no idea what the timpani notes are...just lower higher lower. I'd have to fire up the system and look. Yes, the piano plays the lower CX3 sound and a lower synth sound. I ran into some limitations with programming and the last time I play lower notes on the piano it makes no sound. I'm just faking the bass line for something for my hand to do. I'd like to hear your version.
Hey Terry sounds great Like always. I got a question for you I’m sure a lot of people would like to know the answer. What will you do if Carl Palmer call You and said I’m Setting up a ELP tribute band maybe originals tooI have a guy that sounds like Greg. Maybe touring and a LP A new originals Would you join????
Wow, amazing! Again. And the sequencing is dead on too, not too stiff or unnatural like MIDIs tend to be. I'm curious as to how you accomplished the sort of falling apart sound that that patch has to do on some notes. I've tried the same effect before, but it never ended up quite as clean as yours.
Sorry, I guess I short changed you a bit there. You're not simply playing along with a midi you picked up, you sequenced the whole thing. Great work man, I wish I had your ear!
You are another Keith. I am another Carl. I play ELP drum tracks sa you play ELP keyboards tracks. Where are you ? I want to' play with you. My group ( a ELP cover ) dissolves three years ago and now I play my elecrronic drum like you di with your keyboards. My acustic drum is a 70's Ludwig like Carl set. Tell me something about, please. You are my musical dream
Great job, Kerry.
You keep Keith alive. Thanks.

To be fair I don't know of anybody that's managed to do anything like it
Ginastera told he was happy with this version , really good
Wow. That was unbelievable...from the awesome performance to the excellently reproduced sounds...man, you have a talent.
How could anyone give this a thumbs down?
Unglaublich!
Kerry, du bist ein Held!
Absolut authentisch!
Vielen Dank...
Toccata un altro pezzo stratosferico dei grandissimi elp

When Keith did this piece at the California Jam in 74, the purple haze had just kicked in. It was heaven!
F'ing awsome performance dude.
Purple Haze? -acid?
Thanks again. After thirtyfivesome years of mostly indifference, or "play something pretty", comes the internet to the rescue. Love you repeat viewers.

@kshacklett Formidable! Formidable! Su adaptacion de este musica - excelente! Mi gusta mucho!

Amazing performance

Wow...tight. Great job!
Mega sound design. Really well done.

Mind blowing
WOW!!!!! all very good. every aspect was really good.
Nothing lacking here WOW!!!!
Non ho parole, sei perfetto!! Ti manca solo la casacca di armadillo e sei uguale a Keith
That was really good !!! Awesome performance.
Thanks for that, buddy.
Bravo!
Amazing !!!!! great play ...
Another brilliant 5 star performance!
excelente !!
Congrats Kerry!!!!

Fabulous cover.
Kerry U R Awesome Bro.. SPOT ON
This classic piece was originally part of Ginestera's 1st piano Concerto. Perhaps this reveals that the evolution of Mankind indeed may be in and through music. Ultimate freedom at your fingertips.
Amazing.Congratulation from Brazil.
Verry well done, thank you for posting.
yep. Nailed it!
where's the Drummer? Still appreciate it much!
C'est carrément dément . Comment as tu retrouvé un son aussi similaire , c'est fou
Bravo pour ton travail de titan.
Ab-so-frig-en-lutely FLAWLESS!!! I am literally stunned by your ability to cover ELP like that! Does Keith know he has a twin?
to me, performing with tracks is pseudo live. It's still pretty fun...turning on the camera makes it seem a lot more live. Glad you like it. Thanks.
Impressive!
Master Jerry.
Hehey! What a fine cover! CONGRAT! ELP-Ginastora's Toccata is my forever fave progrock piece (together with Starless of Crimson and Credo of Refugee).
damn I love those tones! killer stuff.
Nice job!!
Master.
WOW!
nice work buddy!
Wow, very good! 👍 where is the second part?

BTW this is awsome.....brillant

...pseudo live... dang! You had to go and remind me. Sure wish I could play it with Greg and Carl...or anyone else who could cut it.
I only try to perform what is on live recordings. As far as I know, all the synth sounds came from the modular except the opening horn sound, which comes from the Moog Lyra. 👍👏👏
Great Kerry ..for sure the best version heard on web . Do you have score for this piece ? Is available ?;-) Thank you in advance for your effort .
I had the two piano score for the concerto. Keith just used a few lines from the 4th movement. I had to figure out which ones..
@@kshacklett Excellent work...gotta hand it to a guy who spent a lotta time and effort to replicate this. Very nice.
Man wish I could've jammed with you as I'm a Palmer imitator = He taught me how to drum (and he didn't even know it ha!)
Hey Kerry...waiting for Endless Enigma!!

fourth down and tritone up, I believe..
Fitrst of all is GINASTERA´S PIECE TOCCATA ..... with arrangments by ELP
fucking brilliant

I'm just faking the bass line for something for my hand to do. I'd like to hear your version.
Surprised he didn't have the kettle drums and gongs ready. 1- man band...👍
yeah, thats just about what I was trying to do. Do you know what the interval is that the notes spread to?
Hey Terry sounds great Like always.
I got a question for you I’m sure a lot of people would like to know the answer.
What will you do if Carl Palmer call You and said I’m Setting up a ELP tribute band maybe originals tooI have a guy that sounds like Greg.
Maybe touring and a LP A new originals

Yeah, I'd join :-)

I'm curious as to how you accomplished the sort of falling apart sound that that patch has to do on some notes. I've tried the same effect before, but it never ended up quite as clean as yours.
Yeah. The swelling you hear in the opening is from pressure.
You two need to get together, find a good singer and bring back progressive rock.
Excellent job! Does the top keyboard ever make set up changes automatically because toward the end it sounded like a different setup?
Watch for me to hit buttons on the organ and upper keyboard. Most of the changes are to the upper keyboard sounds and layout.
Nice work! I don't know that ELP's version is "psychotic" though.....I don't even think there's a word for what it is. :)
5/5
what kind of synthesizer is that?
