Adding soap to silver will not clean it and although it won't ruin the silver it can leave blotch marks where the oils from the soap imbed into the silver and would need to be cleaned properly to remove. The best option for DIY silver cleaning at home if you don't have the proper chemicals or equipment is to line a bowl with tin foil. Place it shinny side up and boil some water. Place your silver in the bowl that is lined with tin foil and sprinkle baking soda on the silver. Then pour boiling hot water into the bowl and leave it sit for 20min or so and your silver will be cleaned. Repeat this again for better results. No need to scrub or anything. The chemical reaction of baking soda and tin foil will cause any grime and tarnish that built up on the silver to come off.

Will this process harm any stones that are part of the item? For example turquoise, native american inlay bracelets, etc. Was going to try this but want to be sure no damage to the stones will occur.

Soap & water do not remove tarnish off silver. Nope.
