Ordered a refurbished set for 279.. been practicing / working my way up from beginner models to currently a Holystone gps drone.. I have a Mavic and a Phantom 3 standard that I haven't flown yet.. the goggles will be amazing! The clunky phone interface is annoying.. thanks for the quality review!

⚠️ THANK YOU! Honest reviews are not readily found on RUclips as of late.
I am a relative newbie to the whole world of droning and almost every one of my purchases has been due to one of your reviews. Thanks for maintaining integrity in a world in which your mailbox will be filled with toys, both good and bad...with the expectation that they will always receive positive reviews.
I am going with the dji RE goggles as I have a Mavic 2 and a M2Zoom which use occusync2.
    👍🏻🙂
Btw: Anyone out there with a physical disability or injury should look at the aerial or cinematic drones as a way to escape pain and lack of mobility and gain better dexterity and coordination. The Mavic 2 series is ideal because if you have an issue that temporarily makes you unable to control the drone, generally you can just let go of the sticks and the drone will just hover awaiting your command..

I have a pair, and if you have tried them, then you too will be amazed. Every one I've let watch through them were amazed as well. Yes they are large, but just like every tech shit, they will shrink. This pair up is my favorite drone setup right now! Not a heart pounder like a race quad. But SMOOOTH like Cadillac lol. Great product DJI

Just got a pair... woohoo! I wear glasses, and really love the DJI Goggles. A million times better than using the app. I use them for flying drones, but also for watching movies / games from my pc and laptop. The dual 1080p full width / FOV screens are cleverly composited using polarized optics... so from 100m up you can see a seagull's wing flapping on the ground. At 1.5km out the image is crystal clear with no disconnects.

First thing I did with my Phantom 3 Pro was make up a long custom hood that wraps around my face with a foam fit, to block out ALL light. I fitted it with a big pair of strong granny glasses to magnify the iPad mini 2 screen (it has a cutout at the bottom where I can pop my hand through a split foam piece to use the touchscreen). I can't believe anyone would want to fly a DJI drone with a tiny phone in sunlight. I have also flown the Phantom with my Fatshark HD goggles connected by hdmi, but the magnified iPad screen is so much sharper and bigger, I never bother now.

  • @pectusin
    @pectusin 6 лет назад +3

I don't think you mentioned that with the goggles and remote only (no phone connected), you're forced to stay in the beginner mode. This was my discovery when I tried my new goggles for a first time today that the flying range was limited by 50 meters around me. To disable this mode, you need to connect your phone, log in in the Go app. Apparently DJI introduced this "feature" recently. Unfortunately, if I still need my phone every time I'm flying, it is a big hassle. My initial excitement fades away.
Also, if you're right handed like me, you always be accidentally touching the pad and the keys with you hand if you want to lift the goggles up.
Another thing, it is really huge and heavy, not something you'd take with you when hiking or kayaking.

With or without glasses, I cannot get these to focus. I'm near sighted and they still have never been crisp with my eyesight and reading glasses won't help me. Hoping to find a use for these at some point. Great quality and more comfortable than you would expect due to the size. Thank you for the great review.

One more additional feature is they are fun with the Xbox. It is another level doing that.. lol.. But they are fun to use. Another Point to make is be careful with the USB charging plug, suggest you have a magnetic usb plug so the connection is then less abused by continual use. Great review mate!

As a home inspector that needs to look at roofs of varying height and pitch, would you see this setup as a viable option for inspection and for taking photos of the possible issues? We often need to see if shingles are deteriorated or have rips. Also roof tiles are very fragile so walking on them is a NO NO..

Glad I came across this one.. I've had drones for 5 years or so and never had an FPV although I have used a racing quad with a runcam attached.. (for recording) Got a Mavic air in the last 2 weeks and so far I love it.. and the phone battery on my S5 (even with a new one) can get drained pretty fast.. especially in near freezing temps... plus my phone if it gets too cold can lockup and shut down which isn't good. As long as these don't "crash" like a phone can they'd be awesome! I could hook up my phone and just keep the brightness to the absolute minimum if needed which would keep the phone battery running for WAY longer than I could possibly fly. I believe I read where you have to at least connect the mavic / or air to the app before take off or you are limited to a certain flight distance.

Great Review. I do like the idea that the goggles don't record. The recording is done from drone camera straight to the drone SD Card, no interference. If the goggle recorded you would be dependent on the signal strength for some of the quality of your recording. That is removed this way. Whatcha think? Am not so worried about a backup recording I guess. Anyway, a backup on the goggles would not be of a high quality I feel also.

There's no 120fps setting on the DJI Goggles btw. The DJI specs you quote on @RCSchim's comment are wrong.
The 3 available resolutions for the DJI Gogs are 720@30p 720@60p & 1080@30p

  • @Rcschim
    @Rcschim 6 лет назад +15

You "could" use the DJIs for other systems if connected via HDMI (future HD video transmission), or connect analogue video to a HDMI converter (but that gives you latency).
You can also connect Dominators to HDMI and see DJI lightbridge (but not occusync)...
You cant stream 720p120 on the goggles (or did I miss a new firmware?).
Latency is actually higher than advertised... and it increases when you start recording, but it's lower on the goggles vs. the phone.
Yep, I also wished that the HDMI was OUT as well (to show Mavic downlink on a TV...)
About the recording: that's the reason I still use the phone (since it captures all the flightdata which I can also upload to airdrones and analyse it there... It helps that I use an android phone (these are charged by the remote and dont get emptied so quick - but then again - the remote does :) Solution: powerbank to the remote if you really need long flighttimes...
But in the end - I thought you had found more negative points - think you were as stunned by the image quality as I am.
    greets, Mario

Nice Review. I will comment that each eye is not presented with a full view of the "screen". The nose bridge blocks a portion of the screen from each eye. This is barely noticeable if you have good visual acuity in both eyes. If you have poor "reading vision" (even with correction) in one eye there will be part of the screen that will not be readable - this is in contrast to say looking at your computer monitor which both eyes have access to - or to a set of 3D VR goggles that present a complete image to both eyes. Also, the touch screen does not present a "mouse pointer" which would be very helpful for feedback. If I am missing something here, please let me know, thanks!

The weight might not be an issue if it's distributed well. If most of the weight is in that screen in the front, then it's a problem, but if the weight is distributed in the circular part that sits on top of the head, which I believe is since the battery is there (and it would be a smart thing to do), then it's not a big deal.

Quality is awesome but I believe the latency will be a big problem. Curious if you've found a better way to get an analog video signal to the DJI displays.

Allow me to do this - I meant to write in my previous comment. I understand it will be for VIEWING the video ONLY and that the goggles (movement of head etc) will NOT actually operate the Phantom 3 pro. I can put up with this controlling the Phantom 3 from the handset (controller) while viewing the results via the goggle sand NOT needing to rely on my iPad as at present which is useless in sunny weather. Am I correct in my assumptions.

Drone Camps RC everything with screen has a display driver and CPU or think like that ( smartphones display goes right into cpu) and they need to somehow transfer signal from receiver to display driver (if its not just one chip) and if you find that cable or solder join on PCB you funded video out. Then you can get eachine DVR recorder and connect it up. But more tech they needed to push in that small place harder it is to solder or find.

are you sure it's that easy with digital images? I think you're more talking about analog video (which can be taken easily from one yellow cable, but the flat cables that normally attach to digital displays - I think they're encoded in some form. maybe it's "just" hdmi signal - but you again have to find out the pin-layout to the HDMI... I wouldnt be able to mod this - but hopefully you're right and someone hacks them in this way :)
You can for sure NOT use a cheap analog DVR to record this type of HDMI video!

What a very good and interesting review. At first I thought you liked them, then I thought you hated them, then I thought you liked them again, then I thought you hated them again. But in the end it seems like you do like them so that's what counts. I'm sold...

Good job Justin! I own the DJI googles. I love them with the exception of having to wear reading glasses with them.

@Ryan Corsaut Wow, so you take the SD out of the drone and insert it in the goggles... that's a bit disappointing. Thanks for the response.

Don't you need to connect the P4P via micro HDMI port, to the controller to make them work, Unless you buy the new Occusinc P4P v2.0. now.

Just little off subject has anyone managed to get Oculus Quest2 VR to connect with any controller as you can side load and run app ok but not connect
The App looks great in them , would be good bit of kit if could connect as 4k screen blisteringly fast processor and Android operating system

Ive looked at the Fatsharks and the DJI goggles. I still haven't figured which. I'm hoping DJI reduces the size of their goggles. They are pretty bulky.

Hey Justin, thanks for another honest review, another great video. I've been a subscriber and fan for sometime now and although I don't own anything you review and probably will not be buying anything soon (retired) but still enjoy and appreciate your work.
Just wondering, do these goggles link to the UAV or to the controller? I'm sure that would make a huge difference on the distance they would work.
I do own (after saving for some time) a Yuneec Q500+ that I bought a couple of years ago and a few toy grade UAV's, mostly indoor flyers, and would like to see an honest review on the Yuneec. When I bought it there were only a couple quick reviews but enough to convince me to get it. The only down side to having it that it's big and bulky and so becoming disabled shortly after it's arrival I've only flown it a couple of times. I do love the stability of the video it captures and at the time it was the best (in my option) aerial video/photo platform available at the time.
But with it's size and my disability wish I could trade it for a Mavic even if I'm no DJI fan. LOL

Thanks for the review of all the lipstick AND the warts...
I'm not a DJI fan, so I doubt I will ever own a set of these, but I like to keep up with all the features... Thanks again, and
    Let's go FISHING! :)
