8 MICS IN 1 - The Sony ECM-M1 is WILD!

- Sony just announced their newest microphone, the ECM-M1. I got to test it out for a few days and I was pretty impressed. I love the variety of pickup patterns and the ability to customize the mic to work best for you. The sound quality is pretty good too! There is a major convenience in there being no cables but, like with anything, there are a few things I think could be improved on.
What are your first impressions?

By far the best video about this mic, thanks for direct jumping into examples etc, that’s pretty much what everyone wants to know, best is that you demonstrate REALISTIC EXAMPLES!!! ❤🎉
Glad you enjoyed! I always try to give real world examples in my reviews
Wow, this mic is insane! I'm definitely going to consider picking this one up. Great review!
It's super nice!
Hi, I loved your review, and I am planning to buy this microphone! Though I have a sony A7c which supports digital hot shoe option but I saw there is a usb c option and a digital-to-analog switch. Does it connect to a cable as well if one wants to use it with usb c.
Can you do a comparison against ECM-B1M?
Which one is better?
Which one are you buying/keeping?
B1M has 8 microphones and 3 pick up patterns.
M1 has only 4 microphones but 8 pick up patterns.
Which one is better in sound?
Would this work better at a loud music concert versus the older ECM-B1M (which I already have). Thanks.
Amazing review! definitely wanna get that one!
You should!
Great review... thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
What are your thoughts on this mic for someone that does instructional content, mostly outdoors and I stand around 12-15 feet from the camera on average? I currently use sennheiser ew100 g2 lav mics and I am tired of the static bursts from bad wires and just having to set things up when I film. Thanks for the great content.
I wouldn’t do a shotgun mic for that type of video. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/Rlz2YQdFTlI/видео.html
Would be a better fit. This wireless system restored my faith in wireless systems 😅
@@benjohnsoncreative Great. Thank you so much for the response. I have been looking at this one but I was worried that I would have some drop in quality from the sennheisers.
Can I use this mic for front and rear voice for vlog
You do such a nice job of explaining things, especially for a novice like myself! P.S. Love your shirt, where can I get one?
Ben, you’ve got an awesome channel, thanks for all the content! Any chance of you taking about how to take down echo in a room using carpets and whatnot? Thanks again! /Chris
I’ll add that to my list! In short, throw down thick blankets , towels, any sort of soft and absorbent material on the ground of the room you’re shooting in
Great video although in your final thoughts the setting you are cautioning against is ultra directional not super and your quick look recommendation was actually super
It has a few names - at the time of recording Sony hadn’t officially named the different settings
Wow! That’s awesome!
It really is!
Thanks for the test. Just trying it out compared to an Azden SMX30v which has seperate capsules for stereo and mono combined in the same (heavy) head. I love the size and lack of cable for the Sony, but the Sony stereo mode is really bad compared to the Azden (or the Rode stereo mic come to that). There's a really weird burble/compression noise to it, and you don't get the sense of natural space like you do on the Azden. At least Sony have fixed the handling noise issue all the previous ECMs had.
I agree the mic isn’t perfect but am also glad they finally addressed the handling noise!
Pretty dialed-in video. A lot of work. Good job
Thank you very much!
How does the omni mode with this mic compare with the onboard mic of the camera?
Every cameras on board mic is different so that’s hard to say, overall it’s better though
Amazing! I am I right in thinking that in Back + Front LR mode, with the safety tracks on, you'd have 4 seperate tracks for:
1 directional front
2 directional back
3 omni back-up
4 -20dB omni back-up
That's incredible! So flexible for run and gun!
Yes
Yep!
Which cameras model support 4ch audio recording?
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Ben does the M1 have the handling noise that the B10 has with the built-in shockmount?
No! They greatly improved the shockmount
@@benjohnsoncreative thank you for the quick response! Great to hear too. Will pick one up.
You’re welcome! Here’s a link to it: amzn.to/45zQ9Gu
I love your videos 🙌🏿 There really nice and professional. Im ddf thinking about buying this cause I dislike these tiny mics that don't pick up much. I wanted to follow u on tik tok but I don't think u have it yet 😔. Still great video 😁
I do have TikTok! www.tiktok.com/@benjohnsoncreative?_t=8dw7QOjaeOB&_r=1
It has a ton of high end frequencies and highly boosted in the mids, there’s almost no low frequencies I can hear.
It’s very sharp sounding to the ears
Not for me but very cool concept
Definitely has room to be improved but overall I love the ingenuity!
Amazing review! I'm surprised why they didn't let you just keep the mic but I guess it's a start. Keep it up bro
Usually getting an item pre release means sending it back, it’s the name of the game 😎
@@benjohnsoncreative good to know
I’m debating between this one and the ECM-B1M. I’m hoping some comparisons will start showing up, but I’m thinking this one may be the best choice.
Personally I’d go for this one! I really like it
@@benjohnsoncreative now that I’ve seen quite a few comparisons, I notice that the m1 has terrible audio quality compared to the b10, B1M, and just about any other mic. I went with the B1M.
@@angelamaloney4871yep, it’s less sensitive and less louder because it has less mics… not good, M1 sounds more like B10. It doesn’t even specify clearly if it’s 16 or 24 bits. In case it’s 24 it’s really bad
@@angelamaloney4871I had both and kept the B1M ✌️
@@angelamaloney4871 are you still happy with your decision?
That kind of mike would be very helpful when I want to record live shows from the pit, but it's really on the expensive side.
It’s not a budget mic, that’s for sure
A wireless lav system gives much more flexibility when interviewing---look at how close the mic is to the two when they are interviewing. Notice how both are facing the camera not each other. Again, I think for my a6700 camera this would be probably the best shotgun mic,....the question is, though, if shotgun mics are really the best FLEXIBLE audio option. Thanks so much for this quality review.
I think lavs are more convenient in most situations too!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
is this compatible with sony zv1 mark 2?
No, it doesn’t look like it is (based on Sonys website)
Excellent review, I am about to buy this mic! Future update from Sony to show the mic setting on screen though? Bahahahahah, we know Sony..... not a chance :(
4 channel recording is so awesome omg
It is!
does the mic work with the sony zv-1?
No, it doesn’t look like it is (based on Sonys website)
@@benjohnsoncreative okay thanks
@@benjohnsoncreative I thought it said it works on all Sony cameras ? Now exceptions ? Oops
What is your favorite talking head microphone ?
This is what I use for talking head shots: amzn.to/3RMkSw6
@@benjohnsoncreative Thank you can you do a video please on how to make a room have less of an echo sound ? My videos seem to have that issue and was looking for a solution that worked.
Low cut is a nice feature.
It’s nice to have!
Can I buy something similar for my Lumix S5?
Sony has the multi interface shoe technology patented so it’s not likely you’ll find something like this for the Lumix
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks for the answer! Do you think that rode or other brands will try to release something similar in the near future? I don't know if it is worth waiting for similar mic that would work with my camera :D
Sweet! Now I just have to wait for a sale. $350 is a little steep...
It's definitely not an entry level price point
Only for Sony cameras?
Yes only for Sony cameras
How much
Too bad it's only for Sony cameras. I wish they'd offer this for others like Canon, too. And I bet they'd earn even more money.
Also it would be great to offer a usb c connection to use it with your smartphone. Just dreaming (to make it more versatile) :)
Thanks for the great review, Ben!
Definitely, I guess it makes sense coming from Sony though
@@benjohnsoncreative It does. From their persepctive they want to strenghten their own eco system. However, I'm more of a fan and believer in open eco systems with interchangeable products - and ultimately think this market is bigger hence more sales.
this mic has so much going for it...EXCEPT SOUND QUALITY---it is tinny, does not extend out for interviews beyond even 5 feet, and does not have a deep bass. Again, no richness to the sound. This is an issue with many shotgun mics mounted on cameras. Overall, unfortunately, it takes time to develop a knowledge base as to the best mics for your audio needs. I would certainly consider RODE, Sennheiser, among others, and consider lavaliers (which will be much better for interviews and speaking further away. I wonder about lavs instead of a shotgun mic even for vlogging.
Shotgun mice are usually not my first choice either
