    Service, Circuit description and Sound Check.
    A very vibrant and responsive amp.
    More suited to normal guitar than bass, due to high gain.

    I have the same amp - great amp, very easy to mod, work on. I've kept mine pretty much stock, left the can caps & mounted new caps inside since there is plenty of room. I've tried it with both EL34s and 6L6GCs re-biasing off course and both work just fine. About 20 years ago, I walked into a music store and asked to see their used stuff - asked about the Traynor - the guy said it blows fuses, told him I work on amps as a hobby and how much does he want for it. He said I could have it but I don't like something for nothing so gave him $25 - he was happy and so was I. Got it home, removed the tubes, powered up via variac, checked tubes on tester, found a preamp tube that was shorted, re-tubed it and it's been a real pleasure ever since.

      Hi, That was a good find. The store should have done some basic checks like pulling the tubes out, but their loss. Keep on rocking and stay safe. Nick

    I've seen a ton of these here in Canada and owned a number of them. Right now, I've got a 73 yba1 and a 75 ygm4. I have never heard of the output transformers going in them but i dont see the same thing a repairman would. Interesting. The old hammonds are known to hum a bit but are amazing iron. Even the new ones are great , i always use them In my scratch builds.
    Its also interesting to see that they find their way across the pond.
    A LOT of people dont know how great these are and how close to the 5f6a , jtm they really are , even in Cananda. I got rid of a mint mesa dc3 to get a traynor reverb master and some older musicians i knew nearly lost thier minds hahah. They thought traynors were junk and mesa was the be all and endd all.. 😂 when i started playing in the 90s, you could buy these at every pawn shop for 50 to 100 bucks, yet players jumped at peavey Bandits for 500 bucks.. i wouldn't have known any better, either, if not for the internet .
    Last week, i was lucky enough to pick up my 75 YGM-4 for 100 bucks. And ive bought a couple yba1s and a yrm1 for well under 500 just in the last 6 years.
    On reverb you are starting to see asking prices of 700 -1200 .. probably thanks to people like you and Johan Segborne.
    I know a guy wuth a basemnent FULL of vintage Traynors. I certainly pick them uo whenever i see a good price. In the last year ive even passed up a ygm and a bass mate for 350 each.
    If traynors had caught on like fender and marshall these would be worth a small fortune. Its also interesting to see a lot of the big players from the 60s and 70s playing them , like John Lennon and Chuck Berry, etc.
    JD Simo has been seen smoking a ygm too.

    I put up down payments in 1965 for a YB1A, but lost my summer job. Oh well then back in 1978 I found another for cheap. Got it checked and tested it was good , with my 1978 Fender American Precision Bass Use a Kustom Bottom with 3 x15 inch Jensen Speakers. What a great pairing and at mix of bottom and amp. Played in same week end band for 7 years and after another 25 years I sold it. I was not playing to much but wish I had of kept it.

    I had the same amp, same year too! I changed the volume pots to 500k and swapped the cap on the volume 2 pot to 100pf to get rid of that piercing ice pick effect. What a fantastic amp, a real piece of Canadian history.

      So, he don't replace the prehistoric electrolytic capacitors, serious leakage is occurring. Expect to buy new transformers in the near future. Good luck.

    My '71 is one of two amps that I actually love to the point I won't sell even if I lose my ability to play. The other is a SF Champ.

      Also that one appears to have a fuse making it a late one to have that. They switched to breakers I thought around '71 or '72. Might have been later.

    Hello Sir. Great video. Very indepth . I know this is old but could you send me the schematics of this amp? I still am working on the model 1918 Marshall circuit you sent me. Thank you for your time and assistance.JM

    Wow, a lot of what you mentioned here hits on some questions I've had about mine. I'm trying to use mine with a load dummy box to go direct but found with Two Note Captor load box
    the eq controls are basically nullified and also the volume does not really turn up much. I'm wondering if I modify the resistor on the output as you did if it'll make a difference. The black wire on mine though, which is your blue wire here, is connected to that bottom tab where you say to switch the resistor to and also the right side. It's connected to both. Can't really see if this one is set up the same.

    It's a safe bet that the choke was done away with as a cost-cutting measure; the presence of this can make the amp dead quiet, as well as give it a bit more sag when overdriven...well worth the additional cost, IMHO...
    Substitute? Good for checking out the mid-range response...and a nice nod to the 'Oo...

      I agree that chokes are really good at making the amp quiet and improving the sag. They aren't expensive, just buy one that takes the maximum current.

    Hello sir I have a question for you. I recently acquired a Traynor YBA1. Is it ok to put into my ampeg 6x10 bass cabinet at 4ohm? There is no impedance selector, I hope the Hammond tranny can handle it 😊

    At 22.52 turning up volume 2 introduces a lot of hiss. I’m having the same problem with mine. When you demo it later, the hiss seems gone. What did you do to eliminate it? Thanks

    What type of replacement output transformer did you say was in the Traynor?

  • @paulcargo4233

    Does the big resistor attached to the speaker jacks actually serve as a dummy load for service purposes.

    • @nickadams5411
      @nickadams5411  4 года назад +2

      Hi Paul. It can do, as long as you don't put music through. But a proper 15ohm load (resistor or speaker) would be used by most service engineers, just so they don't blow the transformer and have to pay for it.

      You may or may not know that the design is very similar to a Bassman. If you ever actually used one you’d know it’s one of the best sounding clean platform amps with a nice fat tone.

    So you are trusting electrolytic capacitors from 1972??? Not changing them is idiotic! I would never trust you as an amp tech. Good luck with your channel.

    • @roncarter2188
      @roncarter2188 3 года назад +6

      It's not unusual for filter caps to still be good even older than 1972 it's a simple test with the correct capacitance meter to see if there's any drifting on the tolerances or leakage. I have some Hammond organ amplifiers that have the original Mallory filter caps that work fine and they're older than 1972 more like 1960. Him using older filter caps doesn't mean he's a bad tech, maybe he just has more sense and expertise than most people would have like Instead of gutting it right off the bat- check and see if they're actually any good....
