Thanks for the info! I had my nails done a couple times and I didn't care for how they dremeled my nails so deep, honestly made my nails a bit painful. Been playing with natural nails for a few years now, but I'm also a mechanic and I break nails often. Your method looks simple, I'm gonna give it a try. The nail ladies insisted that the deep dremeling was necessary even though I asked for otherwise, looks like you just rough them slightly and go for it.

Thanks so much for this method, Ben. I tried everything and this is the method I stuck with. I do sanitize with 91% ISO alcohol before glue. I think they key to this is a very light application of powder as you demonstrated. Too much powder and it gets brittle. Anyway thanks again, love your music!

this works great! when I was young I had fabulous strong nails that grew great & just didn't think about it.. I'm 53 & my nails are shitty & fingerpicking is lotsa my tactile enjoyment in playing.. I looked up "flamenco nail care" & knew Ben woods was the vid to pick outta the results.. I've had this on my nails a week & played everyday twice as much. things I noticed:. it's hard to sprinkle the acrylic powder with your left hand(did it!)& have Emery boards.. smooth any snags or ridges before you practice or play (if you don't wanna be interrupted to do it in the middle of a jam. oh& the shit is cheap on Amazon.. the very shit Ben uses here. I guess a downsize is it don't look great when your walking about the rest of the day (peeps might think you got some weird nail fungus) to me that's a tiny trade for the results!

Hi Ben, I used a long time UV-Gel. It is very stabil. If you want a very strong nail, you can add smal pinches off fiberglass. First put a primer on the nail. To avoid that your nails will get yellow or brown, mix some sunblocker under the UV-Gel. While playing guitar the nails will fluorescents (if they illuminate with UV-lihgt).

If that works for you, then great! Personally I'm keeping my nails much shorter these days and no glues, except for my index nail only (for my 'Alternail' technique). With the lockdown now, it's a perfect time to take all that shit off your nails and let them breath and health. They will get stronger and if you keep them short enough, shouldn't break.

I used to do this, but I hated the negative attention nail polish atracted. Also, it eventually weakened the nails so they became more fragile and often kept breaking. After some time I discovered, after they've recovered and got their strength and flexibility back, that I didn't necessarily need polishing or reinforcing them with cyanoacrylate glues, I left them like that. It was a learning curve though, it definitely helps to have body of the nail, it positively contributes and thickens the tone, without it, one has to try discover the way to play so it still sounds flamenco. With good technique they will not be breaking during playing, even despite an obvious fact, they are more susceptible to abrasion, especially with rasgueados. One compromise I have done is I no longer use hard tension strings, it helps quite a bit.
(but after a long time not having used polish or glue, I am tempted to try it again, using your recipe. Looks interesting ;) Thanks.

I find that my ideal nail length for arpeggios is much shorter than my ideal length for everything else, especially rasgueo, strumming, ect. Its seems my choice is between good tone or fast, smooth arps--but not both. So far, keeping a longer index and pinky nail and shorter middle and ring nails seems to be the best compromise. Have you found this to be an issue?--your arps are stupid fast. I'm not sure if I need to just put a lot more work into my arpeggios or if my fingers are just too long and curl under too much during arps to get speed with a longer nail length.

Ben, thanks for the nail tutorial. I think like many who play nylon, I've really struggled with nails, and I wanted to see your take on this. What really got me was that electric buleria where you were playing a strat with nails!
People reinforce their nails in all sorts of different ways (tips/extensions, silk "wraps", UV gel, Rico nails/glue dots), but you're the first I've seen to do a pure glue and acrylic powder based nail.
What do you do if you break a nail and then don't have the length to apply the powder/glue mixture?

    • @BenjaminWoods

You just sold me with this "never break" comment. . .gotta try this now. Ever just wear them down from doing picados on the bass strings?

    • @jgrossma
      @jgrossma 7 лет назад

Ben. Got a bad break in my thumbnail this week, so I used your glue and acrylic powder method to repair it. It is FREAKING AWESOME. Thank you sir! In fact, I was so happy with how the thumb turned out, I just put the same stuff down on A-M-I too.
Its only day 2, but so far I'm liking this way more than acrylic or gel extensions I've used before. Easier to do, dirt cheap, and basically just reinforces the existing nail. Golpes make a nice solid "thwack" and you can barely even see that the nails are reinforced. Tone is good, too.
For those who are curious about this, the glue mixes with the acrylic powder to solidify into a sort of hard plastic coating that seems to stick really well. .
For what its worth, I used ordinary (not 5 second) nail glue, cause that's what I had, but it seems to work just fine. Also, to repair the cracked nail, I put a silk wrap on top of the crack and then soaked that with glue, with acrylic and glue layers on top of that. That worked so well I used the same wrap as a base on the other fingers too. . .so I didn't have to scuff up the underlying nail to get the acrylic/glue to stick.

I tried using glue once, and over time it took minute layers of nail off until the nail was paper thin. I realized theres no real for me way to attach a hard layer without damaging the nail underneath. All natural now
Since then, after they grew back, i rub lip balm into them a few times daily. Its tedious, but it seems to keep them a good balance of not being too dry to crack and split.

That's great advice if it works for you. Now that I dont accompany dancers often, I only put glue on my index nail. I think the real key is keeping the edges glassy smooth with files. I should update and revise this video.

@@BenjaminWoods well I know you've got better shit to do then answer twenty questions from me, but you'd probably know the answer better than anyone, given the nyloncaster and everything else. I bought a guitar from our mutual friend in Seattle and ive found that my right hand has a bit of a preference for a slightly wider string spacing. 47 or 48mm probably, where I've got 46 currently.
do you know if it's possible to change this? the fretboard itself seems like it would be wide enough and it looks--to a guy who knows zero--like it would just be a matter of drilling some more holes in the existing bridge (that has 12 holes already).
you got any idea whether that's the sort of thing ppl do at all?
edit: professionals, that is. probably E.D. in this case.

    • @BenjaminWoods
      @BenjaminWoods  3 года назад

@@mackhomie6 Now let me get this straight; the string spacing at your bridge (of a Spanish guitar, right?) is 46mm? To me that seems impossible, because the nuts on Spanish Guitars are never thinner than 48mm, usually they are at 50 or 52. NO guitar is ever built with a wider nut spacing that the bridge spacing. So no, I really dont understand. However, from my experience the string spacing at the bridge is almost always 52mm if not wider. If you feel yours is too narrow, than I dont know. Try other guitars, see how they feel. If you already have a 12 hole bridge, I would NOT recommend drilling more holes, but an experienced luthier or repair man would know what to do. Good luck!

Nail glue *IS* super-glue. Its the same stuff, namely liquid cyanomethacrylate. The stuff hardens into a sort of acrylic plastic. It may. . .or may not. . .be a little cheaper if you buy it in bulk labeled as nail glue.
I just tried it and ordinary nail glue works fine mixed with acrylic nail powder. Depends on how fast/slow you move slower drying might be an advantage.

Yes. Your hair will fall out too.
OK, seriously, of course not, *BUT* with any of these nail reinforcing methods, because your nails do keep growing, you still have to do regular maintenance to keep the nails at the right length and keep them smooth.
If you don't file/smooth them at least every couple days (or more often), they may get too long and/or rough and you'll run into problems with the nails catching on strings and/or poor tone.

For beginners, stay natural. Avoid any chemical compounds or powders. There are some maestros in Spain that deeply go against this and even some contemporary current artists like Amos Lora who advise not to use chemicals. Let your nails go through the motions. At best you should use a light coat of hardener before a show, if you are at that level already. Unless you are Canizares playing concerts and touring, don't even think about false nails. Use a multi nail care filer that includes buffer, shiner, etc. Take vitamin E capsules and combine their oil with olive oil in a glass tube with a dropper. Apply every night. Lightly buff after each play. When I started I made the big mistake of following some of these videos and absolutely destroyed my nails, taking months of recovery.

You dont need long nails to play Flamenco, you dont need to put any glue on them even if they are paper thin. I dont do this method anymore, only on my index nail(for my alternail technique), all my other nails are 1mm long with no glue. Never give up!

I've been doing this for 25 years, no fungus, nail bed stronger than ever. Like I always say, I'm demonstrating WHAT I DO. You can choose to do whatever you want.

I dont know brother. That glue shit destroys a healthy nail. Your nails were not looking real healthy before you put that glue on. The only product ive ever found that doesnt eat into the nail is the Sally Hanson Nail Hardener. Just a thought? After years of playing you dont want to have no nails left.

I play for Flamenco dancers, very aggressively, and Flamenco on electric guitar. This is what I do for my nails, (my nails under the glue are just fine). You may do whatever you like.

Fair enough brother. Just thinking of your future playing. Our nails are so important we must take maximum care on them. Keep away from those steel string instruments or you DEFINITELY wont have any nails left. Cheers.

No, thats false. Its all about how they are filed and buffed and polished. Or else I wouldn't be able to do this: ruclips.net/video/H2X-woRBqxA/видео.html

    最近我的"軟指甲"獲得改善,建議可以吃中藥試試,找一個好的中醫師,一定可獲得好的調理。
