taught myself how to hand finish on a job site with my dad when i was just 15. got bored, and grew tired of waiting for him to find a moment and closet for him to show me in, so i just grabbed his extra set and went to work. been doing it ever since
I thoroughly enjoy the hand tape vids. My jobs are smaller in nature and enjoy the tips and hints. Even when you show bead installations etc. Which you have shown in older vids.
Negativity comes from jealousy and unwillingness to take responsibility. "not my job", "Manager hates me", He/She always gets the easy jobs, etc, etc. By going above and beyond your reputation for excellence will become more well known and you will become top of the list when needed. While it may not be your job to add insulation to some difficult cavities during framing, but the person doing the insulation will thank you. Or your boss will, word gets around. My Boss gives me some of the "crappy" jobs, not because he hates me but because he knows I will "git it done". In return I never have an issue when asking for vacation time. Git a little to get a lot, goes both ways. I have learned more about "life" from listening to Ray's (Drywall Doc) monologues than I actually have about drywall. And he teaches you a LOT about drywall finishing.
Great job l love the sounds your tools make on the dry wall and when you slap them on the pan to clean them off for the next spread. Please do more finishing by hand . Keep them coming with your positive attitude. You can't beat a master at his own trade sir Thanks
I'm putting the last coats of mud on 70 sheets of drywall, which I also hung... all finishing by hand. It's going real well... looks great and the customer is thrilled. I've used a few of your suggestions, this year. Many thanks! I really want to acquire and learn stilts and the automatic tools. This is my largest job, yet.
My day job is a carpenter for a commercial construction company. What would you say is the best way to find side work and get the ball rolling? I don’t want to punch a clock for someone else forever.
@TruSciencePro - One person talks to another. I call it the "tree of clients". Branches grow branches. You may need to promote yourself, at first, but eventually the calls just come in and you can select and organize your own work, so long as you've done quality work and dealt with integrity.
Thinking you may like this Story, I got a call last week from a home owner that said hi I’m Dan and I work with with your son Inlaw and he recommended you, I have a basement that I installed the drywall and need an estimate to finish 🤣🤣 so you know what I was thinking 🤣 . So I said I would look at it and maybe pass it on to some piece workers and make a couple of bucks for my time. Well I get over there and he hung the basement like a home owner with a thousand cuts and railroads but on top of that it was 2’ on center framing and 1/4 “ Drywall lol, I told him he did an awesome job but I’m far to busy and gave him few phone numbers to local cut throats in town to call 😂😂😂✊✊
I do handyman work as a side hustle. I don't do much drywall work but am willing to take on more because of your videos. The tearing tape for fixing cracks above doors I have used. The tape actually disappears when it is applied. Thanks for what you do.
I think you are a wonderful finisher and I enjoy watching your videos. I think I've seen them all. I've been drywalling for 22 years. We do most things the same. Still wish I could get my screws to look good with 2 coats.
throw a little joy dish liquid into your mud for the second coat. doesnt take a whole lot. maybe 2 -3 tablespoons for a whole bucket will do the trick.
I haven't been angry in several years. I believe it's because I don't care what other people do if it doesn't bother me and if someone criticizes me I don't take it personally but ask them what they mean and what they think I should do differently. This leads to further discussion that ends up with both of us understand what works better. This is not normal there are some genuinely bad people out there. I agree with what you're saying "be positive" but if a negative person takes everything you say in a negative way then there isn't much you can do for them and they should probably seek psychological help or maybe walk off a bridge.
Have you ever tried to push a trowel for the hell of it? And, btw, this is my 22nd year finishing. Almost 20 was all by hand. Your videos are the reason i moved to some tools for larger projects. What a difference!
I’d love to run a job with you!! I started watching your videos 4 years ago, now I’m licensed and insured solo contractor here in Colorado!!! I have some videos of my work!!!
Hi Rey how are you? Have you ever heard about the drywall thinning I have a lot of problems with the pap screws . I just want to know if you have idea how to avoid this problem I tried to do different ways to do the screws I even use drywall bondo the only thing helps a little is the dehumidifier also I find more cracks but it’s only the material the cracks are not true the tape . I hope you know you have a lot of experience I started to see this problem like 4 years ago thanks
What’s your opinion on learning to use a hawk and trowel. I’m getting better as I go I just still drip mudd everywhere doing a ceiling. It’s not easy at all using a hawk and trowel as I’ve learned
I never got the hang of using a hawk and trowel. I can hold a pan of mud and all my knives 8-10 & 12 while using my 6 I don't think I can do that with a hawk and trowel.
I’m starting to learn a hawk and trowel, I still struggle In tight areas but I think I can master it. I still have more control with a 12 inch knife, I think my biggest issue with dripping off the ceiling was too much mudd on the knife I’m working on using less
Is there any difference between dewalt, marshalltown, Columbia and L5 skimming blades? I need a big blade about 32” and perhaps a 24” any recommendation on brand?
My pops and I mainly do small basement jobs. I get the most out of watching these types of videos. Thx Ray

Thanks for the lesson on drywalling and kindness. We all could use a reminder now and then.

I like your style you're a damn hero to drywall.
Great work ,learning a lot can you please explain more on the convex and concave sides of knives , and there uses .
Thems the knives my old man gave me to learn with at 12. I still have them at 32. Really only use the 10 still but they stay in the tote.
Thanks for the pearls of wisdom Ray, I appreciate it. Have a nice day my friend.
Another great video..thanks. I like using pan and knife lately on small jobs. I'm mostly on my hawk and trowel.

The wood is too wet it needs to dry out more before you even start to drywall it

I prefilled with durabon taped with all purpose topped and skimmed with +3 I think it was a while ago.
