Such a pure sunny clean refreshing soulful song
This is one of Johns best songs, river hadn’t finished this song so John had to to write the rest of it, I really like both parts, R.I.P. river ❤️
The last 20 seconds of the song i could listen to over and over. I wish that part continued for like another minute or two. Sounds so cool and its just such an amazing part or outro to end such a good song
The main loud section at 2:23 is both one of the most beautiful things John has done and one of the biggest indicators of what he'd do in the future with RHCP. Those chords - unmistakeable

Agree. I went through a big River Phoenix "phase" (not sure what else to call it) in early high school. (2009-2011) I watched all his films, listened to Aleka's Attic on repeat along with song incessantly. Hearing it again now almost 10 years later...ooooof. RIP River.

These are the most potentially accurate I've ever seen but how did you get them? There's no way anyway can understand what they're singing in every word, and that seems to be an announcement that these are real, not just your own best attempt.

Some of these lyrics are definitely not what's being sang
This song starts out great and then, something happens and the melody changes, it becomes totally something different from the way it started.. I like the start very much.
It gets screwed up because River died after he recorded the first part and John had to finish it himself. It's fucked up because John was fucked up and went into a tailspin of array of drugs to numb the pain he has of losing his best friend
Is a beautiful beginning and it sounds soulful, melodic, haunting.. I love River's part... River.. our elusive, wild, caring, beautiful Prince of a Man/Boy... He was not exactly grown up all the way yet. His girlfriends and friends have only good things to say about him.

Mary you say River was John's best friend? Get a grip. ..If River was his BEST FRIEND he would of phoned 911 but instead he bailed leaving River in a HORRIFIC condition. River's body started to shut down quick and John did NOTHING to help him Its to rotten and EVIL... And right after it was as if John is happy River's was gone. John is very voided I see right through him. He took the life of an INCREDIBLE person and not once repented to the public. If he was sorry he would say so but instead he said River should of never been born. Very psychotic person JOHN is.

'Height Down' is an outtake of his first album, 'Niandra Lades'. The same for the other song with Phoenix. ('Well I've been') The songs were postponed because of Phoenix's death.
It was originally titled "soul removal" and well I've been was originally "bought her soul"

@Young Beige There are quite a few brilliant artists who never touched drugs (a good example would be Eric Dolphy) and there are many who take drugs who are not creative at all. It's not a prerequisite at all, but on the other hand I can admit that some people have stated that they benefited from it (Funkadelic etc.).
Little do you know he was just given a cup by John that had mixed drugs in it River was never an addict

Omission with Josh (I think) is awesome too
Sounds like he says "soul reproval" to me and not soul removal as the song is commonly known as. "reproval - an act or expression of criticism and censure". Soul reproval would fit River's style more as well.

avs kjhkjfhcv he isn't ashamed of it, he said it doesn't fell like a real album to him. He doesn't feel it has a steady flow that an album would have and the reasoning is that all but four of these were left over tracks from Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T- Shirt.Apperanlty one song was recorded when he was 17 and that's on here, and then the other 3 were from after Niandra that he recorded for the album. So in his eyes i guess it's choppy

I've got the album. But when i listen to this track it doesn't sound that clear like here on youtube. It sounds very dull, like someone plays the song under the bedcover.

I had this problem also and it's only on this song, so nothing to do with tape copies. The good sounding cut of the song is on the 17-track album version, the bad one is on the 18-track version, which is really the same but Smile From The Streets You Hold is cut into 2 parts. That's how you can easily tell the difference. Do not buy the 17-track edition of Smile on CD. I paid another $30 to buy it again just for this song.
Maybe you're stereo's fucked? Try listening to both with headphones if they sound the same your stereos fucked.
