These 2 are among the very few filmmakers who can make legitimately unnerving dark comedies. A very rare quality these days.

@@detectivejimmymcnulty1676 Dark comedy isn't as present as standard comedy. Think of it more to balance out the weird a little. It can also provide the more memorable scenes in films if done correctly. Eggers and Lynch are masters at that.

@@Rickie_Speed I get what dark comedy is my man, just don’t recall even the slightest bit of humor in Midsommar. Unless me chuckling at the absurdity of the escalating plot or the decisions made by the shockingly stupid characters counts as it being a dark comedy?
I’d say a much better example of a dark comedy would be Manchester By the Sea.

    • @ILoveDavidLynch

I think branding their films exclusively as dark comedies risks sounding a little pretentious, in this same interview they talk about genre and Robert Eggers insists that The Witch is absolutely a horror film, however I definitely understand this sentiment... Whilst I don't agree in the case of The Witch or Hereditary I can see a lot of dark humour in The Lighthouse and Midsommar... particularly Midsommar, I literally just watched the directors cut and laughed multiple times throughout. The way that the characters tragedies are so poignantly referenced and mocked is pretty fucking hilarious at times.

Interesting that Aster was so turned off by movies he felt were mean-spirited. I suppose the nature of his own films are kind of a reaction to that, or even a maximization. Midsommar is possibly the most mean-spirited film I've ever seen, and I mean that in a good way.

There was a movie that's been bothering me since then, the description for the film was a karate school that gets mixed up with some neo nazi's they go to the karate school and massacre the students the movie was an 18 certificate and had a warning about extreme violence. At the time I was to young to rent it but it's always been at the back of my mind. Any thoughts on the title?

My main issue with blue Velvet is I'm not sure at which scenes I should be laughing at and which ones I should not. Most of the scenes are pretty clear cut with how horrific they are, but at certain points I find myself laughing at moments that I feel are not going for that reaction. It might be my dark sense of humor, but I don't know. David Lynch always has this strange way of getting me to laugh at shit that should not be funny.
