Notice how Tuner, Seager, Machado were all Dodgers before they signed their mega deals? Dodgers were fine with them leaving instead of paying these contracts.
my friends and I call this "The Dodger Effect". the Padres are scrambling to maintain relevancy, as it pertains to beating the Dodgers, that they just threw money at players without thinking about the future.
The difference between the Manny and deal and the Xander deal is that you are essentially overpaying Manny for services he already provided for your team whereas with Xander you are overpaying a guy for what he did for the Red Sox.
Can Padres fans shut up about the Dodgers buying championships? Notice that LA has zero contracts on that list, and three of them were signed by players leaving the Dodgers (Seager, Machado & Turner) while a couple more were for players the Dodgers allegedly were interested in this off-season (Adames & Freid). If LA was, as people suggest, just throwing money at players to get stars, budgets be damned, they'd have have the spots on this list. The Dodgers spend money, yes, but they spend it smart. They are seldom carrying the top payroll in baseball, it just that they are more successful than the teams with bigger salary totals, or the teams that offer the most lop-sided contracts to get the best player they can. After Mark Walter & his partners bought the franchise, they made some big initial deals to jump start the team in 2012-13, working their way out from the hole that future Padres owner Peter O'Malley dug for them by selling the organization to a media corporation with no interest in running a baseball team which then flipped it to a con artist for a favorable TV rights deal and a Boston vacant lot. But once those initial flurry of moves were made, the Dodgers settled down and spent years cultivating home-grown talent. Until trading for, and extending, Mookie Betts, the Dodgers won seven straight division titles and two pennants, without a single big-name off-season acquisition. Yes, there have been a bunch of deadline deals, but Machado, Darvish, Turner, Scherzer, Dozier, Lynn, Gallo, and now apparently Flaherty, all left when their contracts were up. Since then, they have acquired a few big names, but they were all good enough contracts to avoid the list in this video and they were long-term guys the Dodgers planned to build a champion around, not throwing money at the biggest name available until they ended up with a roster full of shortstops and had to find them all new positions, and off-load a generational talent to the Yankees to save money.

I love what Peter did for this organization and city but it’s unfortunate how his last 2 big deals will both cripple the team throughout the 20’s and the beginning of the 30’s. We just better hope Tatis, Merrill, Salas, De Vries, and Sasaki(hopefully) will be able to carry the team while Machado and X take up a roughly combined 65 mil of the salary
Why would sasaki join a team that cant even keep their players…and overpay 30+ year old players….yall haven’t even developed a Cy young caliber pitcher….blake snell was already a proven comodity from the rays system….keep dreaming for the stars sasaki aint signing with yall
@@darwinpenafiel it is true that we haven’t developed a good starter through our system in the last 10 years. but it’s also true that we didn’t have Ruben Niebla who has proved to be a top pitching coach in the game. Not to mention how the padres already have a lot of Japanese appeal with guys like Darish and Matsui on the field and Hideo Nomo in our front office. Taking that all into account why wouldn’t SD be a good option for him? or would it just be better to shove him into the 6th spot in the shadow of Ohtani and Yamamoto in LA where their arms can’t stay consistently healthy?
@phigher1 the only reason the clips r worth anything, is because their owner is the richest owner in sports, just built a new arena for them, ps- at least the pods have made 2 ws, the clippers r so pitiful, they have made one conference final, in their 55 yrs, ,and the pods more than double their attendance ( 40k to 17 k a game,

Funny how these brilliant moves the dodgers been making has mlb fans crying, yet they dont have any players on this list and many were players dodgers let go.
If Judge continues to produce in the ballpark of what he's doing now after 2027 one can argue he shouldn't be on the list. His CF at age 32 was decent except for that 5th inning blunder in WS. Padres got cuaght over-bidding for everything (including trades) to comepete with LA and they need to get to the WS to justify it by 2027 or sooner I would think.
Seidler is O'Malley's legacy. He is the great-grandson of Walter O'Malley, the Dodgers owner who brought baseball to LA. All of this has been a long-term plot. The Dodgers have been ahead of San Diego all this time. Mwah, hah hah ha!
Oh yeah, it started with Machado and Bogaerts. They have lost Tatis for a season with PED’s, Snell is gone, Soto is gone, Profar gone, Kim gone. Maybe if Machado played with his mouth they might have a chance, it’s the only thing he works out constantly.🤷🏼♂️😂
Lets say Boston is even willing to bring Bogaerts back. Heres an idea: BOS gets: Bogaerts, Mayfield, Suarez SD gets: Mayer Theres 35 million off the books. Can then re sign Scott and HSK and still save some money. Try to get Sasaki then maybe trade De Vries and 1-2 prospects/lower level big leaguers to get one of Seattle's starters.
Padres ownership has been so bad for so long. RIP Peter and I’m happy he and AJ built a fun winning culture in SD…BUT the contracts are so fucking bad and they aren’t looking like they will win a WS to make the terrible contracts worth it. Cronenworth contract sucks the Darvish contract sucks. They won’t win with this core and it will all be for nothing and set them back a decade. These contracts will cost Tatis and Merrill’s primes. Padres won’t win a WS with this core unless they say fuck it and keep spending money and accept they will be fucked in 3-4 years. Instead they did nothing this off-season while other teams in the NL got better. Terrible ownership will always cost this team.
Time to dump the Bogaerts contract and free up 25 mil a year. Tough ask though as theyd probably need to attach 1-2 top prospects and maybe even eat 5-10 mil a year to do it. Trading Cease and Arraez would be a mistake unless its Cease and Crone/Bogaerts and a prospect for Abreu, Mayer and Casas type return
