I understand why most people don’t like Ash anymore. True he is childish and never won a League yet. But his love for Pokémon and his friends are what make loveable. Plus acting childish is what make him funny. Ash will always be my favourite character no matter what.

I think it’s just edgy people who want an L or Mikasa type character or a competitive battler trainer (which I have an entire thing on why it can’t work like that in the show. Basically it’s that Pokémon are just as sentimental as humans and therefore forcing them to breed will not end well for anyone). I personally like a fun loving character and the darker characters are all in the manga.

@@ianfransen2415 Ash did defeat Giovanni though multiple times. Giovanni doesn't care about Jesse and James so he let's them do whatever they want. He's not weak at all and is one of the best trainers in his universe. Keep in mind that his goal is something misunderstood because of the dub.

From what we know, Ash lacked interaction with other human, mostly his Age. And as far as the history beween him and Gary, or Him or Serena from the camp shows or mentioned it, he didnt had any real friends before starting his journey with almost 11 years old. I guess, combing the fact of having no friends in pallet town, his company often being only Delia, sometimes the guests at their restaurant(Oak included) and the Abscence of his Father is the reason why Ash considers his pokemon and friends in the regard of company Family, as mentioned in the book 'the animation', he tells himself that he doesnt wanna become like his father or grandfather. Nobody could blame him, they both walked out to become trainers, Ashs father leaving Delia around the time of Ashs birth, a little later Delias Mom also died from a decease, leaving her restaurant behind and the struggle to handle the Ash and the business.
Edit:Would also explains why he is so dense, he never had the talk, and the stupid antics from Brock alongside Brocks failure with Ivy.

I am/was in a similar situation, the main point being the lack of social communication. Ash may behave as he does in the first season because he has only been bullied, when you've only experienced things such as that any good interaction is seen through the lenses that others want to mock you
He is still bullied by most of the community nowadays. But i respect Ash here.

@@ganoninthepit don't forget they always compare him to Red to downgrade him as a joke, when actually Red has become a joke these days if you ask me. His team? A joke, even a kid that knows the basics of the game can beat him in less than one hour without losing not many Pokemon (can't really tell on Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee) and few weeks ago Game Freak even made a joke of Red and the reason why he wasn't on Sm4sh, his Charizard disboyed him (the Pokemon a lot consider his starter). Game freakin Freak did it (Now that's a really low blow when the company that makes you does it).
PS. I know that doesn't count, but we all know Pokemon Trainer is Red so yeah...

I personally think that Ash Ketchum's personality changes between series.
Original Series, Ash Ketchum was really arrogant but still kind and regretful when he realizes he has done something wrong.
Hoenn and Shino series was Ask Ketchum was more of a mentor to both May and Dawn.
Black and White Ash Ketchum he became like a kid again but he grew back into being a mentor and even a competent trainer in Pokemon XY and Z series.
In Sun and Moon, Ash Ketchum really becomes more like a student, Not like an Arrogant Kid yet Not like a mentor either.
I want to add to this by saying that Ash has more of a flat character arc, which essentially isn’t where it’s like a bad-to-good character like Vegeta or Sasuke, but it’s where a character’s core personality traits aren’t about how they change through the series as much, but how these character traits affect the world around them. Ash is a perfect example of this, such as with his rivals, companions, character-of-the-days, etc.

My mistake, Sinnoh, I guess I am showing that fact that while I was a big Pokemon fan during Gen 1 and 2 years, I really did drop off a bit during the advanced generation and even during the Diamond and Pearl generation.
Hoenn Sinnoh and Unova were the regions where I was diving into allot of anime for my own mature tastes and only kept an eye on the Pokemon Anime when it was on early morning TV but never really got fully back into it until the Kalos region where Pokemon X and Y really took my attention back into the Pokemon series.
Of course I did know about May and Max, Dawn as well as Iris and Cilan while I had to look online for Cilan's name so I could spell it right since spell check it hopeless on here when it comes to Japanese or even any Anime character's names, Cilan is often a name not too common in English.
Japanese regions that Pokemon were based on are often hard to find in the spell check as well.
So in the end, it is often my mistake for spell checks.
You forgot johto
I guess Johto is often included as part of the original series because Ash still had Misty as a companion.
But I do believe there was some improvement on his arrogance during Orange Islands that made his Johto character seem really calm compared to his original season 1 character.
I never knew that Ash had a secret childhood, but still going from bullied to loved is something be proud of.

I love how over time, he went from cocky and arrogant, to being more humble. His Sun and Moon version probably being the sweetest Ash we have yet. It's also nice to see how in Sun and Moon, he became more self sufficient. He doesn't have companions that do things for him anymore, so he learned how to do chores and to cook. I hope that when the Gen 8 anime comes around, he keeps that self-sufficiency

I really don't get why so many people hate/dislke the Sun and Moon series. Honestly, it was most likely my favorite series. Although honestly ash's face could have been drawn better, as ash being the main character, it shows how strong and special of a trainer he is. His Lycanrock is a very unusual dusk color, his Rowlet is quite talented, (and funny because he legit slept mid-battle in the Alolan League battle) his Litten/Torracat/Incineroar (kind of) beat an evolved version of his/herself, he caught/got a melmetal that has incredible power, he became friends with an Ultra-Beast, and he even defeated Tapu Koko's legendary Tapunium Z with his Pikachu. Although I do feel like it was a close tie for 1st place with other series, it really showed incredible talent and power Ash has, which a main character in every book, movie, series, etc. should have. Not to mention how incredibly mature he became. Like, he isn't like, MATURE, but he did have some improvements. (wow, for the first time I actually wrote this long lol) And, I really don't want to say this, but it actually made me cry when I realized the series was over. I haven't watch the Pokemon Journeys series yet, but I have watched the trailer, and it kind of made the series look trash in my opinion, seeing how good of a series Sun and Moon was to me. I really would wish more people would see what I see in this series.
Kei Enokida sun and moon might’ve been alright but it’ll never ever beat xyz. xy and xyz were so heartfelt and just had way more personality to me than sun and moon did, it was so incredible and honestly i feel like sun and moon was a big downgrade when being compared to it.

Man I feel bad for Ash. His father dissapears after his birth, he was being bullied, and his childhood was tragic. And yet, just because he can't win a league so many people in our universe say he sucks. He is a human. Just because he is in an anime doesn't mean everything goes his way. In other animus, people are skilled karate guys and have superpowers (if that isn't true then sorry Pokemon is the only anime I watch) while in this, everyone is just a normal human. I can actually relate to Ash. I like my life, but I'm not the most proud of it. Im being bullied by my brother daily and I feel like I've lost my life. So I have accepted that and I'm trying to reach my goals and help other people in their lives. That's why Ash is my favorite character ever. I always imagine that I somehow get sent into the Pokemon world and become his friend and stuff. I once was so into that idea I actually dreamt that! I just wish everyone saw Ash they way I did. They think he is a loser, but I know the truth. Inside him, he is a true winner. And he always will be. No matter what everyone says. To me, Ash is a real character. Not a cartoon. And that's why I won't let anyone in this world hate on him. Not when he doesn't deserve it. Because he is the real Pokemon Champion

Carla Carrero and also in fights I actually can win because although he is stronger, he doesn't use strategy. And Ash has taught me that strategy is way better than just going for the most powerful move and when he doesn't use strategy he always loses like his first fight with Trip. He just thought he could easily beat Snivy and didn't use strategy, so he lost. But the reason I usually stop the fight with my (unfortunately) brother, is because I'm afraid our parents will see it. Though seriously, once in a fight his friends had come and I was fighting him and guess who his friends helped. I'll give you 3 lines

YESSS!! As an Ash fan, I'm so happy, but as a Ben fan, I'm hyped!
I see his own motto is 'If you love something, set it free.' I'd like to think he keeps the Pokeballs of the Pokemon he releases, both as a memento to their times and so he doesn't have to catch them again. A little rebel, but is a total Momma's Boy. He loves Pokemon as they are. Gonna read the books, because this is too cool.
The books also say that he was a pitcher for the baseball team, explaining the whole thing with Casey in S1 and explaining how he could throw a Pokeball the way he does. It also explains the Iron Tail charge up training, with Ash most likely using a stick or a baseball bat as the 'tail'.
I'd like to think his dad was Giovanni, which would mean that while he is strong, it's no wonder no one knew where he is since he's busy with TR stuff all the time. It'd also explain why Delia apologizes for lying to him so often. Also apparently his grandfather is traveling too but we get even less info on him so who cares--
It's about the journey with him, travelling with who he loves and doing what he loves. Also I love how he's learning how to do household things since he's LIVING in a house now.
With all this in mind, maybe Serena was one of his first 'human' friends. N is his parallel in that while they both adore Pokemon, N isn't a fan of humans while Ash believes in their capacity to improve. Plus Zorua copy those they like and Serena copied Ash's mindset in a way to improve.

I knew most of this, except for Ash being bullied.
Ash may not be the perfect trainer, in fact no one is, but he's got a great heart when it comes to his friends and Pokemon. He does try his best to understand what there is to know about Pokemon, but because of how his learning ability was handled during some of the seasons(Unova especially) it's easy to flack on the kid. But he's a good person who has come a long way(and SOMEHOW still stays 10 every time! *Damn, Ash! Give me some of whatever you're taking) and I feel that he will keep an element of his character from every season (Kalos even more so) to make him more mature even if his age never does.

@ComanderShockington I'm sure he does think about Butterfree every now and then, but he wants it to be happy with its mate. Some people probably wouldn't care and would keep their pokemon regardless of their feelings. But from all the times I've watched Pokémon, and Ash, Ash has always put others before himself. It's like how we fare in life: life gets in the way all the time and we can't always do what we want to do, no matter how we plan it.

The puropuse of ash failing most of the time is to teach the viewers to never give up on the goal you want to succeed in
Why so people keep Over looking this without realizing his purpouse is to teach me you and everyone to NOT GIVE UP on what your dream is
He's showing us we have to keep Fighting until we reach the goal we all desire for our lives
It also seems to me that winning a Pokemon League is incredibly difficult. People criticize Ash because we expect the protagonist to win, but if someone gets bronze at the Olympics, do we say they're a failure? Hell, no, it's impressive they even qualified! Lol.
Because in a story standpoint it does nothing but halt the show's progression and does not give any meaningful direction other than to be an excuse to extend the series the anime might as well teach us no matter how hard you try you will never ever succeed. I get that the show wants to teach us that despite the failures we should never give up but is it any harm for an anime to teach more lessons than that? Like even in victory you can keep improving yourself. Or let Ash deal with more personal conflicts.
I felt in love with the character many years ago, he's kind, he's brave, he's strong, and I find him so adorable. He is an inspiration to me to keep going forward in my life, every time I'm down or when I fail in something I remember him and his iron will

In the metaphorical sense yes. He's grown to be a mature young man. Though just like a lot of cartoon protagonists he's literally still 10 years old, somehow...
"If you really evaluate Ash, Ash is both an iconic and inspiring character. "He keeps failing" Ash went from Top 16 to Top 2, that's progressing shows how much he improved over his journery, plus Ash did win 2 other Leagues. "He dont evolve his Pokemon" Ash showed skills with pre-evolve Pokemon but when he do evolve his pokemon he got Top 4-2. "He always released his best Pokemon" Pokemon in the anime do have personality, and a role to played, Ash considered the Pokemon feeling and the situation and do what's best.
That's all true, though I wish they'd stop keeping pokemon unevolved purely for comic relief, it stifles their growth, often in personality as much as strength (like Oshawott).
Pokemon can still be charming in their final forms and that's been proven before. I'm tired of discount Piplups (though I love him as the original).
To be fair, he basically restarts fresh every time he travels to a new region. If he kept the same team throughout each region and consistently trained and battled using those pokemon, he'd easily win a league. His pokemon would be plenty strong, but he wouldn't be accumulating the kind of experience he needs to become a pokemon master. If his end goal were to simply become a league champion, then he probably could have done so awhile go.
Ash is so lovable because of his love for Pokemon, and how willing he is to help others:) definitely a good role model! can relate to him with the bullying part as well...although seems like he had it worse....poor ash
It’s scary how similar I ended up like ash. I was bullied and harassed and felt very alone in my childhood (still is there but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) to a very friendly person willing to help animals in need. That’s probably why I find myself defending ash as opposed to jumping the “bash ash” bandwagon

Tbh I can relate to Ash specially his childhood, thats why Ash is one of my favorite anime characters even if people can love him or hate him, still he is my first anime character I was a a kid, and I can relate about Ash, a lot...His Childhood being bullied, his father, playing alone..is something that happend to me in my childhood..but thankfully watching this vídeo or reading satoshipedia, makes me love ash more as a character (even though being reset on unova) he improve a lot as a pokemon trainer, bonding with friends and pokemon, and now sun and moon developing daily life skills, thats why admire ash for never give up even the harsh moments he went through, thats why i can relate in my RL harsh moments And improve more.

I understand completely why ash seems more childish in sun and moon, my theory is he always sees Alola as his vacation home and since he is now going to school there, it reminds him more of when he wasn’t travelling as in xy and co. he was always travelling but in alola he has a home and responsibilities to do.

Add on to ash’s childhood I think I know what happened to ash’s father so it’s starts when ash was young and he was sleeping when he heard his parents arguing his father wanted to leave because he wanted to become a Pokémon master because he hated that delia kept saying no you have to take care of your son but then ash’s father became so upset he slammed the door and ran all the way to viridian forest where he sat to rest then he closed his eyes then marshadow came and went into his nightmares and showed him his future then he jumped and woke up then he became mad and hungry for hate for Delia for not letting him become a Pokémon master because in his childhood his parents wouldn’t allow him to because the world was too dangerous for him so after all this time he would make his mad dreams come true and when he created team rocket and then after trying to catch mewtwo the Pokémon gave him another sign of the future that ash had all these friends that he would go with to become a Pokémon master but then the vision stopped then mew told him if the father could catch him he would have to become on mews bad side with him and try to stop ash from achieving his goal so when he finish creating team rocket he had some of mews powers of hypnotism and tricked almost all of ash’s friends fathers and also got scientists and other people to become minions and leaders of their own evil team so then he became known as Giovanni and created mewtwo then caught him and became team rocket and there goal to beat ash and bring and let ash become evil so and try to let Delia be with her ex boyfriend again it was also to be more famous then professior oak and rule the world together with his wife

Ash has been and still my favorite Pokemon anime character since Pokemon has been my life. Ash from XY will always be my favorite, it's like he's the bad a** character like I can't even explain how he developed so good in that series alongside with Greninja. ComanderShockington Takeshi was there when satoshi left his butterfree also in the one of the Japanese ending sequences in the Hoenn arc butterfree can be seen in one of the shots so it’s obvious Satoshi still remembers him
