Akihito Isaka is considered one of the most explosive karateka, the principle is that you get explosion from using each and every fiber in your muscles, now each fiber can't be partially tensed so the muscle only uses as many fiber it needs for a movement, when you do these slow exercises your muscle fibers will get tired in a few seconds so the muscle will start using more and more of them, until it REMEMBERS to use all fibers, so you always get 100% out of them.
Kata is where most of the art is when it comes to karate..i believe some define "art" differently when it comes to their preferred martial art and will bash other martial arts and say theirs is the best. Karate, just as many other martial arts purpose is NOT only to be able to defend oneself, it is also spiritual, health beneficial, and personal. These types of martial arts usually produce practitioners who are respectful of other arts, open to new things and disciplined.
Also a little sidenote; the pushup he does at 02:00 is commonly called "superman pushup", and is considered the hardest pushup in the world. 1/100 (might be is was 1/1000) from average ppl can do one clean repetition. I remember awatching a clip in YT where a guy does 20 reps. I'm pretty sure there are not many people watching who can beat that, if someone reading can do over 20x reps, back it up with a video upload. ;) I'm pretty sure it would get some nice hits. :) Great core training.
If I may interject, such exercises can only harm you if you're not using a balanced approach to them. By that I mean, work the opposite motions: if you do a horizontal push exercise like pushups/knuckle-ups, you should also be doing a horizontal pull exercise like rows or inverted pull-ups. Normal Pull-ups are great, but remember they are a vertical pull exercise, so the proper opposite motion for them are handstand push-ups.
I would also suggest alot dead lifts, squats, squat jumps, and jump rope. I also love the pully machine, your able to make fast power moves. If your body building, like I said before focus on explosive wieght training.
try this yourself and then you will know whats so hard about this! how do you found this clip, when you dont have any idea on how hard any kind of sport really is?
So it does worth doing push-ups, pull-ups, handstand push-ups, sit-ups and other exercises, cuz last week I had a talk with a friend that blown away my mind, he said they do more harm than good for fighting ability and that I should only train on the blocks, punches and kicks..
not true, each muscle fiber fires at full capacity or not at all, he is working the slow twitch fibers not the fast twitch ones. This is endurance training
He's a friend from highschool and we used to hit the gym quite often and gotten pretty muscular and our karate instructor told us to quit bodybuilding because it will have bad effects on our fighting in competitions in the long run(slow hits, less endurance). Then we split paths for quite some time and I met him last week when he said he even quit bodyweight exercises cuz he's afraid of building more muscle. But we're not huge at like 5'11 and 175 lbs, question is: how much muscle is too much ?
There is a difference between endurance muscle and muscles used for power and speed. Just look at endurance athletes like long distance runners and sprinters and you will see a big difference in their physiques. I'm sure Kanazawa didn't do body building but may well have done strengthening exercises. You could look at Morio Higaonna the Okinawan Gojuryu master doing strength, power training exercises, and they appear to be quite specific to actual techniques. Isaka sensei doesn't appear to have big muscles like a body builder or power athlete
deadguy29, you dont get slow motion training at all or the value of core muscle devlopment, this sensei was doing top competitions into his 50's ex jka instructor, 2ic at wkf under yahara so he sees and understands his value
Unless he's resting on knives or those plates he's resting on are made out of red hot lava I don't see what's so hard about this or am I missing something?
I think your sensei is right if it's just pure bodybuilding. Just building bigger muscle. We use to have a weight training session every satruday for an hour before our karate class. What your interested is in building functional muscle and explosive power. Its everything your doing now, but changed slightly to add explosive traninng techniques. Take a look at gsp training for helpful tips or on youtube under explosive training.
Felipe Jaeger He locking is articulation by being relax with the intention to stay in that position. So he can breath by is stomach. Not an easy thing to do, it need a lot of practice and also concentration.
Other strictly fighting arts tend to produce students who are hard headed n love to bash anything other than what they practice. Martials arts is self defense first..and i think karate provides that more than sufficiently. And if ure talking about unconditioned shins, y not have a look at uechi ryu or kyokushin style..speed wise..
Having a fitter body will help with fighting ability, not the other way around. Maybe your friend isn't exercising properly/isn't resting properly. You should always have at least 48 hours between work-outs of the same muscle. Although only having stronger muscles won't necessarily make you a better fighter, a stronger body can be an advantage. Look at Oyama, Bruce Lee, Kanazawa, Yahara and most professional fighters. They all train they're bodies because they understand that is an advantage.
Hey there, have you heard about MuscLeader" (search on Google)? On their website you can watch a useful free video featuring the right way to pack on noteworthy muscle mass very fast whilst eliminating fat at the same time. Chris or many other guys like him experienced good success using this approach. Perhaps it will work for you too.
respects tonyvalente BUTof coure a sprinter jogs, the point he is making is resistance and stamina thats why he aint doing high reps, karate punches arnt stiff as you say,i dont think you warrant or have earned that small opinion my friend, bow
What competitions? Point based competitions? Like when you just hit to get the point, you don't actually have to do damage? It may be true for point based competitions but for full-contact/free fight I see no reason to not work out. Just my 2 cents. Either way it works out differently from person to person so you should try and find out what balance of strength training / technique training is best for you.
Hello there, have you tried "Musclegend" (just search Google)? There you will find a good free video demonstrating the way to build up noticeable muscle easily. It made it easier for Brandon to overcome his body building stagnation and thus build toned muscle without fat very quickly. Hopefully it will help you also.
not at all! try that with any exercise you excel at. take 8 seconds to lower the weight (wether its your body weight or equipment) pause at the bottom and you will notice it is easier to lift the weight.
@deadguy29 You're trying to become a martial artist and you lack patients even to the point of waiting a mere 5 minutes. Why don't you just give up with an attitude like that.
He is cheating in this second pushup. How? Well he asks other student to repeat it, but doesnt explain him what exactly he is doing. And what is he doing? He is using his feet to help elevate from the ground, so watch his feet carefully and watch the position of the feet of his student. In fact, it seems that student is much more stronger then teacher because he didnt use his feet at all!
Those are useless exercises! To improve as a karateka (this applies to the art as well as to the applications) one must develop EXPLOSIVE muscles, and that's not accomplished by spending this much time on the slow motions.
@bushidoartss and i'd like to correct something for you. You're going to want to take off your profile that you "fluently speak English", because you don't sir lol. If i didn't have so much experience talking to idiots on youtube i'd barely be able to understand you. You also should take off that you practiced shotokan, you'd think you'd be embarrassed by that based on how you talk lol. You're a great example of why people DON'T like martial arts, because they think they turn into you lol.
Mmmm...he does one push-up in slow motion and somehow people think is impressive? If you want to look at serious, real karate practitioners please search for Yahara, Kagawa, Tanaka, Elwyn Hall, Frank Brennan, and a long etc. I've seen three videos of this guy already, trying to figure out what the hell is this all about, and just wasted 5 mins. of my life...

You're trying to become a martial artist and you lack patients even to the point of waiting a mere 5 minutes.

if a karateka goese to mma the karateka dies using 100 % of is fiber muscles LOL
