    Back in the day I did self defense under an Aikido instructor. He also was blackbelt instructor in Shorin Ryu karate, Judo, & boxing. Most of our techniques were based in Aiki jiujitsu. He taught the distinction between aikido & the " harder" Aiki Jiu-Jitsu. Aiki Jiu-Jitsu used realistic moves that worked due to "tap or snap" & pain compliance.
    He also introduced me to early Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, for which I'm eternally grateful.

      If he spelled it JiuJitsu he didn’t train in Japan. That’s an incorrect western Romaji translation (translates something similar in to ‘free day.” JuJutsu, Aikijutsu, or Aiki Jujutsu are the only correct spelling in Romaji. Gracie bjj has no direct ties to any extant Ryu of Nihon JuJutsu. It’s very limited catalog of techniques is identical to the hundred year old Kodokan Judo ne waza. (ground techniques).

    Excellent presentation of practical street Aikido. One thing re: knife attacks - how to defend against the "grab and multiple stab" approach of the so-called "sewing machine" knife attacker? I have yet to see an Aikido defense presented as to same. My thoughts are that the best approach is to grab and immobilize the attacker's hand (wrist) holding the knife with both hands, while then applying some kind of throw by utilizing the leverage of the entire body against the attacker. ?

      You are correct. Many Aikido practitioners forget that part.
      That is why it is best to begin aikido after becoming proficient in other martial arts.
      The way Aikido works it is actually easier if the attacker is fully committed.
      But it is important to remember the flashy falling is just the attacker looking after himself.
      When the technique is applied to a non practitioner attacking with full force it doesn't look flashy.
      It looks like the person breaking their arm and falling awkwardly on the floor.
      That is why resistance is not always trained in Aikido, and when it is it is done carefully.
      Even so I nearly broke my shoulder last week because the guy I was training with got excited and dropped me to the floor as soon as he took my balance. It's not fun.

    Like many kongfu, Aikido is one of the most choreographed! You literally can predict the movements. Whereas in real street fights or in the ring, you'll never catch that killer upper cut, left hook or right punch coming at you, let along "playing"with the moves.

    • @shia_labeouf
      @shia_labeouf Год назад +3

      I think you're failing to to understand what's actually happening. The first part of Aikido is to move out of the way. The reason Aikido is hard and takes years to learn is because of the core essence of movement and the need to train that into muscle memory. You don't "catch" an attack, you get out of the way. Even if you do no technique at all the whole foundation of Aikido is that you shouldn't be where the attack is going to land. The rest of the technique comes when the attacker continues attacking or loses their balance as a result of committing the attack to somewhere you are no longer standing.
      Indeed, in this video "evade" is his first step every time. This is the point.

      You teach knife and gun defense so you can not fear them. Fear is your first enemy, then hatred. If facing a knife, give in, but you might be killed anyway. We had women in our school, do we tell them to be raped first, murdered later. It is for self defense, but you have to use judgement,,
      If you stay calm, you can think clearly and act smarter. The martial arts teaches not to be afraid of getting hit. Think and plan, in a flash.
      Don't panic.
