Nice insight. The album unknown pleasures were recorded about an half hour drive from my house. (Strawberry Studios). Not that it is relivent, but I thought i would mention it, ha.
This was a fun exercise, and it's a decent mix for something done so quickly. It's interesting how you approach it more like a traditional punk band, whereas Martin Hannett went in a totally different direction, which is what gave Joy Division their unique sound. If you wanted to get closer to the original EQ you could use the Kramer HLS, Lindell 69, or UAD Helios instead of the SSL since the original would have been done on a Helios console.
Sorry, but the original mix is perfect. Esp. if you own one of the early vinyl pressings. The later versions published on CD don't do the original mix justice. I am pretty sure that one of the synth tracks isn't a synth played via a keyboard. It is just the guitar track send to the audio-in of an analog synth.
I'm the biggest JD fan, but you go for it m8. I'd love to know how Martin Hannett produced the two JD albums, so this is probably as close as I can get
Bring the bass up and the "whoosh" effect needs to be drenched in lush reverb and the keyboard line that goes with the guitar needs to come down a lot If ya did all that it would have more of the original vibe to go with all his pre amping and EQ tweaks to get a more modern vibe. Then you would have a good blend of a little old and a little new.
A definitely marked improvement! I like your mix over the original. I had the lp back in the day and, although the album was impressive, it felt rather subdued in many of it's elements. Interesting fact: when Joy Division, themselves, heard the record in it's release, they were utterly aghast as they intended it to sound even more edgy than your remix. But, after a time, even they grew to appreciate Hannett's mix as he gave them their most distinctive sound.
Although it wasn’t my intention to outperform or recreate the original mix I do appreciate your kind words! Thanks for that insight into Joy Division as well 🙂
This was a brave exercise and instructive to follow and listen to, thanks for posting it; I think this experiment mix loses a lot of the subtlety and shading of Hannett’s production. Everything sounds bright and clear and up front here, but the track has lost a lot of depth and murky drama. There are several albums worth of JD tracks recorded before Hannett took over, and these demos have a very similar character- brighter, louder, more up front, etc.
I think you make a great point where the impact of the listening experience is not always tied to fidelity. At the end of the day it's about how the music feels. A lot of information is transferred in the tonality. Thanks for this!
@@enochjensen I’ve never heard isolated JD stems like this before and hearing them all laid out and re-evaluated in your mix process was super illuminating and interesting.
dude you have no idea how much i would pay you to have these tracks- is there any way i could obtain them at all??? i will absolutely pay you for them.
@@enochjensen i get where you're coming from with that, but the dude's been gone for 43 years now and the rest of the band does absolutely nothing about bootlegs or anything of the matter. they simply don't care. from a producer to a producer i absolutely adore joy division and would just a love a listen to these myself..
A bunch of Joy Division tapes were rescued from a dumpster after a studio closed in the UK years ago. I have over 3,000 original studio multitracks. Really don't care about the big labels like UMG,Sony,WEA. I've been screwed over many times. Everything has a price. I've bought session transfers under the table from a&r reps. It's an expensive hobby.

Petter Hook and Stephen Morris talk about it a lot in their books. Hannett was a unique monster of a producer.
just what i needed before finals
Great work and results! Guitars sound really fresh!
Ruinous treatment of the guitar - all the purity that shone out from the faraway and futuristic landscape of the rest of this track is lost.

this is enlightening
Thank you a million for this❤❤❤❤❤❤!!!!!!
Hey I’ve been looking for joy division stems to study with no luck, would you be kind enough to share?
Sorry, but as I've said before, these are not mine to distribute.

I believe that what happened is that Hook wanted them to sound like the Sex Pistols.
Hey Enoch, fellow engineer here. Just curious did you work on any of the DJ Hero project stuff?
Hey there. No, I never got any hands on with that game. That came out right toward the bitter end of the franchise.
upload multitracks to the network
The "delay" was the AMS. Hannets brand new toy that defined the sound.
And I really enjoyed the video!
It could sample the sound going through it and loop it, I don't remember for how long the loop could be to be I heard 13 seconds.
This album is the only old recording I would not criticize for having auto tune applied quite liberally.
😯

The autotune bit was the tits.

As much as I would love to do so, and not for money, I cannot release anything that isn't mine to release.

@@theonlydjtopcat that’s very true- if i could get a hold of literally any of those tapes or at least the tracks on them that would be incredible
@@theonlydjtopcatwhat tapes have you got
How’d you get the tracks?
I was one of the re-mixing engineers for Guitar Hero
any chance of getting this multitrack released 4 public?
If it was up to me I surely would share. Sadly it's not. :(
How did you get these Tracks?
I mixed audio for the Guitar Hero franchise
Where did u get the tracks for this song
I was an audio engineer for Guitar Hero some years back. These are archives from that time.
