With 14 million copies sold, Minecraft is now the 3rd best selling PC game of all time.
Not too shabby, considering it was originally the work of just one person.
Love it or hate it, Minecraft is a phenomenon. Its accessible mechanics mean that in the beginning, all you need to know is punch trees: get wood.
So where did Minecraft's concepts spring from - and why has it proven so popular?
Mining is far from a new mechanic in games: indeed, it's been present ever since the golden era of arcade gaming.
1982's Dig Dug sees the player oust subterranean pests from their garden, carving tunnels in alluvia as they progress.
It was possible to lure a hapless pooka down a tunnel you created, and then dig underneath one of the strategically placed boulders to crush them.
Later that year, Mr Do! offered similar gameplay, with a focus instead on collecting fruit dotted about the level.
Boulder Dash in 1984 was particularly influential, kicking off the once very popular 'rocks-and-diamonds' genre.
Similar to the earlier puzzle game Sokoban, your moves must be carefully considered - with boulders responding to gravity, it's possible to dig yourself into a corner.
Your goal in this game is simple: dig tunnels, avoid enemies and environmental hazards, all while collecting diamonds. Sounds familiar!
More recently, boulder dash clones have fallen out of favour - but every once in a while, digging, drilling or mining makes an appearance as a mechanic.
Dig Dug successor Mr Driller! in 1999 offered more in-depth excavatory exploits, with cutesy graphics and bright coloured blocks through which to burrow.
Mining for resources was the focus of flash game Motherload, originally released in 2004 - and the slightly prettier Super Motherload, released for the PS4 last year.
You start on the surface of Mars, with an agile mining craft yours to control - and your goal is to extract minerals from beneath the earth.
The deeper you venture, the more valuable ores you'll uncover - but you'll find yourself depending on the upgrades available to progress.
It was the combination of digging and exploration in Motherload that inspired the development of a game that would prove particularly important to Minecraft's conception.
In Infiniminer, mining is the name of the game: a team-based multiplayer dig-em-up, in which red and blue race to collect minerals from the cube-based terrain.
The game's popularity was cut short by a source code leak: and the resultant wave of hacked clients killed off the game's development.
Nevertheless, it had significant impact - as Infiniminer is perhaps the closest living relative to Minecraft: it directly inspired Notch to create his cube-based game, and also one of its key traits: a randomly-generated world.
The social aspect of its survival multiplayer is perhaps what made Minecraft so incredibly popular: while the game's world is engaging enough when played solo, the addition of other players - friends, foes or otherwise - can make it even richer.
In this aspect, Minecraft borrows from MMORPGs: not only in the online sense, but with some of the other trappings of earlier RPGs as well.
Early MMO games like Everquest and Runescape set the standard for role playing in shared spaces, in a time before World of Warcraft had taken hold.
The crafting mechanics in Minecraft can trace their lineage back to such games, as they introduced these mechanics into the multiplayer space.
Minecraft's collective building - in which you create worlds with an avatar in a virtual world - have roots in games like Linden Lab's Second Life, which paved the way for social creation in 2003.
Players are able to create 3D objects and skins for their avatar to wear and interact with, and with a fully realised economy, some have even made a living from their creations.
However, Minecraft has far greater appeal to the younger generation: its simplicity and accessibility a key asset.
It's often compared to a digital version of Lego bricks: with simple elements combining to make grand structures, whether building solo or more collectively.
It's little wonder the game has found success - while many of its elements can be traced to other titles, and some, like Infiniminer, have huge resemblance - Minecraft has a certain charm that few games can match.
From a simple idea, Minecraft has blossomed from a retro-style indie cube-miner... into a multi-million copy block-buster.
Multi-million blockbuster... I see what you did there.

@@brazgazz the problem is it's really hard to get figures for tetris, because it's a pretty old game and there are so many clones of it. Official numbers range from 170 million to 500 million +. If you included all the tetris knockoffs and unlicensed reboots it would probably beat minecraft but that's kind of unfair since that's basically comparing a franchise to one game.
The problem with RUclips is channels like this spend weeks or maybe months editing and creating high quality content like this. Yet make less money for it than someone who screams at video games for 15 minutes.

sigh
This is such a common opinion and I just don't get it. Yeah, the world isn't fair. That's not a problem with RUclips. If people are watching 15 minutes of screaming it's gonna generate ad revenue. Sorry if I sound a bit condescending.

I love minecraft for it's exploration. Running around the world seeing gigantic mountains, forests divided by grasslands where sheep and cows live, great lakes hidden by high hills, the giant tree standing on top of a majestic hill. Experiencing the joy of discovering those set of unique blocks is the main reason I play minecraft. Even though they're only blocks there's a certain charm to them and the random generation that few games can match.
Hopefully games like No Man's Sky can give me the same kind of experience (if not better). But until then Minecraft will still be my go to game for exploration.
Hudrow Portnof you were so wrong about no mans sky
sadly yes. The performance problems on PC alone was bad enough, the gameplay loop they had was even worse.
Ultimately they simply couldn't make most of their planets interesting and unique enough (especially in the starting areas). Everything was so bland and washed out without any detail so everything ended up looking similar only with different colors.
oh well. At least now we have Astroneer. Not exactly an exploration game but it does No Man's Sky survival gameplay a LOT better.
"hopefully games like no man's sky"

Minecraft is most fun if you're on a small friendly survival server, but it's hard to get a good community on a server, since the community of the game is terrible.
Still a better community than LoL's or basically any first person shooter though. And no matter how salty the community, you'll always find nice players - but in any game ;)
There was an old server called Skyquests with a great community, but it shut down due to people not playing on the server anymore in late 2014.
i used to play on this.
Austin Tzoanakis what was/is your IGN?
"the community of the game is terrible"
Wrong.
Communities vary from server to server. The bigger they are, the more varied kind of people you'll find (good and bad), and the harder it's to keep them under control.

Ah...playing at 12AM on the 360 back in 2011.
Buddy tells me to install a game called Minecraft and I'm thinking "but dude the graphics are shit" (plus i think it was classified as indie and indie games on the 360 were....well hit or miss.)
But I installed it and played the tutorial world. Still remember I was eating pizza and just sitting there building the shittiest wooden house asking my dad if i could buy it.
I miss that. I've rediscovered Minecraft in a way because of a new friend of mine and she loves it so we play the shit out of it. And Minecraft is still fun.
8 years of playing Minecraft...and I along with millions of others who have been playing for longer, are still having fun. Minecraft will never die. Maybe get less popular. But it will never die. It has gone down as one of the greatest games ever made next to...fuckin Witcher 3, doom 93, halo CE, etc. Which is funny to think about but hey...just proves you don't need billions of dollars to make a game franchise. Just one good idea and a bit of passion.
(Minecraft now is...a bit more about money but meh the core idea is still there lol)
Doom 93? Damn they're really milking the series dry aren't they.
@@Misha-dr9rh good joke ngl haha
Don't forget Team Fortress 2
I think Minecraft was best at around 1.5 or 1.6 when they introduced wolves and weather. After that, the game just got too complex and wasn't as fun. Now, I can't enjoy mining when I'm constantly dying of hunger.
I weep for humanity sometimes.
ahh the days of beta, wishing for pistons and then when the came out never using them .... Memories
They were the best of times, they were the worst of times. Memories of game breaking glitches, no nether in multiplayer, huge chunk errors. They were infuriating back then, but looking back I miss how it was so elegantly broken. It doesn't feel indie anymore. The charm is commercialized instead of realized.
MINIMAN096 Or using them, but as launchers.
Beta 1.7 was the best version. 1.8 did go to much to RPG
Do something on Terraria. It is an absolutely fantastic game that is misunderstood by many.
It's too often compared to Minecraft for some reason, likely because they start out somewhat similarly.
***** Terraria is fantastic, you have tons of bosses, thousands of unique items, dozens of armor and weapons sets, great replayability, world variation, etc etc etc. You probably haven't played it for more than three seconds anyway.
Sh0rtStack "You don't enjoy the game, only possible option is that you haven't played it". I don't give a toss about the game and frankly think its a bit boring, according to Steam I put 31 hours into the game.

Theadventurebox3 Terraria is....slow.

So happy to see Dwarf Fortress mentioned. I've loved that game for the past 10 years, it never disappoints. I would argue that composing and sharing the story of your fortress's demise in the forums gives it a multiplayer or at least community aspect.

It's mostly derives from the social factor of the game, and awareness of it.

I just can't explain it.
+SSZaris Same. The old alpha versions have a lot of nostalgia to them, when the game was fresh and exiting. The big updates and changes alienated the original feeling. I would love to live through the early days of minecraft again, playing with all my friends and classmates lol. Good times
By the way, the more recent Launcher allows you to go back in versions. You can play alpha again!
Matt Shanhan, every Minecraft launcher lets you do that.... 🤦♂️
C'mon you dont need to be hate , you still can play using launcher stop being "blinded by nostaligia"
Mostly, it's because of the changes to the lighting (it used to be a lot more bright and colorful) and terrain generation. Before they introduced biomes, you never knew what you would find generated, but now most of the biomes look like copies of each other (all forests look the same, all grasslands look the same). The only interesting places are when multiple biomes meet up and make something cool or in mountainous areas. The new terrain generation just kind of lost that feeling of never knowing what you will find. The night is also a lot less dark which removes some of that nightly terror. These things all negatively affect the atmosphere and exploration of the game, which is likely a big part of why it feels so different now.
I like how minecraft's "minimalistic graphics" are intended to be "less resource intensive"
when, infact, it runs like crap with art to match
+ProfessorConnor Were you playing it on a rock?
