I saw my first Indianapolis 500 May 1976 on ABC. Back then, the race was shown on tape delay, in the evening. The first live broadcast occurred in 1987, with Al Unser, Sr., winning his fourth 500. Incredible achievement. All of these finishes are amazing!!! I have been lucky to see most of them!!! My personal favorites: Al Unser, Jr.’s first win, Jacque’s win and Helio’s fourth win 🏁🏁🏁
I was 5 years old and I understood the magnitude of a potential Andretti win in 2006 and I was so upset. Finally went to Indy in 2022/2023 and I will never ever miss it again.
12:50 The most dramatic finish in motorsports history together with Sainz Sr's motor exploding under a kilometer away from the finish and losing the Rally world championship title. I'm not sure anything can beat this and that rally finish. Classic. To this day I feel so unbelievably bad for Hildebrand even though its great that Wheldon won it after what happened soon later. I wish that some day Hildebrand could somehow win Indy 500
12:52 National Guard was cursed that weekend. First Hildebrand blows it on the final corner at Indy, then Dale Jr runs out of gas on the last lap at Charlotte
To think this all started because he never got a proper shot in Formula 1, bar five races for Manor F1 Team the year prior to him joining Andretti. The rest, as they say, is history. I can't wait for tomorrow's running of the 500 for the 106th time.
The craziest thing about the 2021 race was that was the only time in the entire race (which had a grand total of TWO yellows, mind you) that the leaders hit a significant amount of traffic. And they didn't actually have to get through it, because they hit it on the last two laps.
Al Unser jr should have known, he should have known that fittipaldi was going to run into him he gave him little room, but al had to do that it was his only chance at staying ahead in p1
The 1992 race was the first auto race I'd ever seen, and at the time I couldn't tell who won at first. I thought for years it was because I was young and it was a close finish - but no, that cut away to the flag stand as they're crossing the line! Shows you how far coverage has come - I doubt you'd cut to the artsy glamour shot now, or replace half of the final lap with images of worried wives like they did ten years before.
Jake cut out the biggest gaffe in racing commentary ever when Rusty, in his good-ol-boy excitement, almost called it the Daytona 500. "This is going to be the greatest Daytona 5-- I'm sorry -- INDY 500 EVER!"
ABC’s horrific production of the race still angers me when I watch these classic clips with the constant cutting back to the wives or the split screens on the last laps of the race where there is a ton of action going on. Show the reaction shots afterwards…arrrrgh!
Would you guys like more indycar videos in the future? If so, give me some suggestions!

The greatest spectacle in racing.
It sure is with Le Mans, Daytona and Monaco (even tho the race is boring)
9:25 Ah back when swearing on team radios weren't censored. Gave some golden moments like this from Arie 😂

Montoya was my favorite driver, and watching him win was amazing
I remember watching the '06 Indy. Quite a shocker to see that finish happening.
You can add 2024 to the list.
Also 22 and 23 😊
I love that Weldon won but JR how heart breaking he must wake up at night just reliving that and going downstairs to hit the bag.
Ok Man, Helio Castroneves, Winning The Indianapolis 500, For The 4th Time, Was Shocking.
And 30 years after Mears conquering his 4th Indy 500, nonetheless.

Amazing quality of 1989 episode!

JR with one of the biggest chokes of all time, Wheldon was nowhere near him
13 years later, and 2011 still hurts
12:52 National Guard was cursed that weekend.

Great video clips love the finished u picked out. Ty great job
2011 Dan Wheldon’s final win 😢
If he hadn't won that race, he would still be alive and not part of some dangerous circus event in Vegas.
Suggestion for future video: Closest finishes, just in the mid 2000s at ovals you could find enough for one video
Oh I can find enough for sure
There should have more Indycar videos!! Maybe the Best races and Best finishes in Indycar history
I want to make more
@@jbaskinger41 Hope you have the time to make more! That it would be one of the ideas for that
It’s crazy to think how that clutch and coast guaranteed Rossi a spot in Indycar. Hard to think where he would be if he didn’t win.
He would still be in Indycar. Dude just has the worst luck in recent years.

The "Spin and win" race for Danny Sullivan? Great show that day too!

i will never understand how jr managed to hit the wall and get passed by only one person
It's a shame you didn't use the Indy radio commentary for the 1992 finish. Bob Jenkins and the whole team absolutely nailed
Imagine if Castroneves had been able to grab all the ones that got away

Gordon Johncock. The man with 2 different ways to say penis in his last name.
Is John a way of saying Penis? That's usually for a toilet
And then there's Australian racing legend Dick Johnson

Is that thumbnail from Iowa Speedway?
Why would they let Rusty Wallace call an Indy 500? 💀💀💀

NASCAR was not on ESPN when rusty did the race.
For this generation nothing is topping 2021
I wish the CART cars were still being used.
That first video Johncock and AJ really look like they were going slow
Might not have been exactly at the end...but...where was "The spin to win "????
Little Al left the lane open and the other guy took it to another win.
Why do the racers go below the white line at the finishing laps?
now add 2024 to this!
